I think Frank Schaeffer sheds a light on the self-righteous character of a lot of Christians of the Fundamentalist variety.

Karen, because Frank distanced himself from his father's friends is very sad, but I'm sure that before this took place they tried to talk to him after his father (Francis Schaeffer) died -

When Frank Schaeffer says he raised himself and had a 'nanny' as a teenager, one has to SEE, there is something very wrong with this picture -

Karen

The 'Topic' is Frank Schaeffer - After reading his books, many of his quotes/interviews it has become obvious by his own admission, that he has decided to follow a different path.

Frank was home-schooled as were his sisters - Frank claims to have raised himself, this is just but ONE of his complaints against his parents, which couldn't be true if his mother was busy home-schooling him - He also claims that he had a 'nanny'- its very hard to believe that a teenage boy had a 'nanny'-

"I lost my virginity to Mandy, a beautiful twenty-year-old. . . . Our 'relationship' lasted for about three months. Kathy-the-virtuous [Frank's nanny] used to pound on my bedroom door when she knew we were having sex, trying to make me behave according to the principles L'Abri officially stood for.

Frank has embraced the 'Emergent Church' which in essence is very much the 'mystical' Church, and has nothing to do with the Evangelical Church - see post #22 -

“All but one of my pictures were rated “R” for violence. I don’t mind violence in films, or sex for that matter.”

Victoria - I forgot what else I was going to say. :-)

I don't think either Xion or I are advocating being accepting of sin. My thought (& I think Xion would agree) is that we accept each other for who we are, while at the same time helping each other to overcome sin in our lives.

Sometimes that help may entail confronting someone, in a spirit of love, with our concerns. Most of the time it entails prayer. And sharing our own stories - of struggle & of victory.

Victoria - In the past on this blog, it has been acceptable for one to jump in & say, "I think what So-n-so meant was..." or something similar. It has often been helpful.

Excuse me for saying, but it seems that sometimes you don't give a person the benefit of the doubt on what they're saying.

In my comment above, I was assuming that, though we all struggle with certain sins, hopefully we are also not wallowing in those sins, but trying, with God's help, to overcome them.

I realize that is probably naive. But I'd like to think that most people who call themselves by Christ's name would not be callously abiding in their sins.

I have had close Christian friends who have sinned grievously. A woman felt God had called her to abandon her family to become a missionary. Another close Christian friend had an affair with a "good" Christian woman at work. As a deacon in my church, I witnessed biting and devouring galore. The list runs on and on.

And yet, my love for these folks is unfeigned. Their sins are a stench in my nose, yet my friendship does not waver -- if perhaps I might influence them to turn from their ways. Even though they refuse, my friendship is steadfast. Why? Because my own sin is far worse than theirs.

The foul smell of sin is ever before me, yet I take comfort in the power of Christ to cover it all by his atonement. What I cannot abide though, is those who pretend it is not there, that they are without sin. What a wretched lie this is. And nowhere is it more prevalent than in the church. Ask a sinner about sin and he will freely admit it. Ask a Christian and he will deny it. Lord have mercy on us all!

Karen,

It would be much more honest if YOU say what you mean, what you think, and let others say what they mean -

As far as others who are most judgmental? It's not my place to forgive others of their sins, it is the LORD's - I don't accept sin which the LORD has told us in His Word is sin - I can't accept sin which God has said is sin, that would be ridiculous, if not outright sinful in itself -

Xion might need an interpreter, but I doubt it - who knows maybe he enjoys others jumping into the fray to stand by what he says -

Victoria - I think Xion is merely asking us to imagine what it would be like if we all really knew each other.

I think we'd be surprised. And humbled.

Also, I think those who are not truly repentant of their own sins would be the most judgmental of others, & those who are truly repentant would be the most forgiving & accepting.

Xion,

Why would we need to know everything about everyone else in our Churches? Jesus certainly knew everything about everyone, (woman at the well) but He is God the Son.

Frankie likes to shock people, his books, films are nothing new, and now this book which he hopes will bring more attention - however, I believe many Christians will be turned off once again after reading his book -

Transparency is one thing, GOSSIP about ones parents is another, and its not honoring in any way -
