News they will lose
Haven’t heard much about newish Defense Secretary Bob Gates? That’s because people like him: “On the job for less than a year, Defense Secretary Bob Gates is winning widespread praise for building a bipartisan approach to handling the war and military issues. ‘It’s a breath of fresh air,’ said Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee. ‘He’s far more open minded. He welcomes other ideas, he solicits ideas.’”
Now, I think that constitutes news.

“He welcomes other ideas, he solicits ideas.”
We desperately NEED ideas….

I think our nation is far better off when the Executive branch and the Legislative work together, rather than have the former shut out the latter. A more open DoD offers the possibility of better information for decision-making, a vital need (here, I am totally in line with MIM at 1).

As soon as the scandal about Gates is revealed, the Republicans will be saddled with “Gates-Gate.” They will never be able close the gate after those horses have left the barn.

Someone once said the secret to having good ideas is to have a lot of ideas.
OK, it was Linus Pauling.

TRR, funny story involving Linus Pauling.
I had an Indian bio-chem prof who was discussing Pauling once and said with a wry smile (and Indian accent), “Linus Pauling is an amazing man. You all know by now that he is a hero of mine. He has done more in one lifetime than others do in many.”

He is said to listen to the experts in his building and thoughtfully respond when he disagrees. A world apart from Rumsfeld and one of the President’s better appointments.

Shhhh–don’t tell anybody. Bush has been very slow to get rid of aides he should get rid of. About now, he might think, I should be quicker to dispose of people than I have been in the past and then get rid of somebody he should keep.
