Good morning!
Today’s movie quote:
“A cultivated woman – a woman of breeding and intelligence – can enrich a man’s life immeasurably. I have those things to offer, and time doesn’t take them away. Physical beauty is passing – transitory possession – but beauty of the mind, richness of the spirit, tenderness of the heart – I have all those things – aren’t taken away but grow! Increase with the years!”

Norm P. wins! A Streetcar Named Desire is correct. Norm has just become the first winner of the Derek-designed Emoti-Puppy!

I see Lynn got rid of the flea. That’s probably a good thing, because pretty soon the poor puppy would be trying to scratch his ear, and I’m not sure his little puppy legs would quite reach.

This is what I was trying to say on the thread about home ec classes in college a few days ago! Of course, the context of the quote kind of messes with the weight of my argument.

I came on here after 10:00 and thought, Wow, I sleep in till after 9:00, and I’m still first? but then when I tried to post I was told comments for the thread were closed.
It seemed to me that might be an easy way to lighten the workload for the moderators–just close all comments and sit back and smile, imagining all of us bonking our heads against our screens, trying in vain to get in.

Sorry about the excess italics; I suppose I did something wrong in closing italics. (That was one of the main things I always used preview for!)
I suppose I should get busy and not just sit here in front of my screen being lazy.
I can’t get too involved in anything since I have to go somewhere soon, but I can do something.

My brother in law who is a 40+ year old bi-polar vagrant with violent tendencies and a drug habit, just got back from court ordered rehab in Augusta this week, and was released from jail. Unfortunately he refused to stay anywhere but his parents house. My wife has just spent the last nine months helping her 88 yr old mother (her favorite person in the whole world) regain her health, and resents (understatement) this… eh… disaster of an intrusion that her manipulative brother represents, and refuses to spend time at the house, except to pick her mother up for appointments or take her somewhere.
Pray for us in this situation. My relationship with her brother is worse than hers. I pretty much read him the riot act a couple years ago when he got into so much trouble that the county banned him (I was yelling at him because he was in the county, and selling drugs or buying drugs from, with, or for, his kids). I have since refused to speak to him or welcome him to my home. I’ve tried to make it clear that situation can change if he’ll admit his problem/s, and wants help with them. That message was not well received.

Yeah, we have two dogs and just had an episode of fleas, right after one dog had surgery that didn’t heal up. I’m really glad the fleas are gone.

Today is Friday…yeah!
And that means it’s time for the College Football Saturday Contest.
Tomorrow, ESPN’s College Game Day will be in Eugene, Oregon for the Oregon vs Arizona State football game. It should be a good one.

(#3) LSU (7-1) @ (#17) Alabama (6-2)
(#4) Arizona State (8-0) @ (#5) Oregon (7-1)
Texas A&M (6-3) @ (#6) Oklahoma (7-1)
(#9) Missouri (7-1) @ Colorado (5-4)

I’m praying too. Our family went through a similar struggle with one of our members. It is really, really difficult.

Me, too.
One of my dearest friend has an older brother who acts like your brother-in-law. She frequently either bailing him out, cleaning up some tragedy, or trying to forgive him.
He’s not that close to her, but causes a lot of trouble anyways. I know you all need God’s grace to carry on.

Make it Man,
There is nothing more difficult and complicated than dealing with family “problems”. Because it is so fraught with competing emotions and loyalties, sometimes it’s better to have a neutral third party to enforce the difficult decisions a family needs to make. Some sort of an ombudsmen is helpful. I wish you all the best.

Frank’s post got me curious: I think it would be interesting to see a straw poll of the Republican (or inc. Democrats too for what it matters) candidates by this blog’s readership.
Report comment to moderator
A poll of 110 people tells us exactly nothing (except what that finite little group of individuals believes).

Make it Man you have my prayers and sympathy. Well not sympathy but understanding. With my alcoholic mother I never wanted sympathy. Sometimes love does have to be tough. I haven’t seen my mother in almost 15 years due to her alcoholism. The last time I spoke with her she couldn’t remember who I was. I dreamed night before last that she was dead. I woke up yesterday morning with the surety that she has died. I spent yesterday and today trying to track her down but have been unable to. I called my father, but he told me he didn’t want to get involved. So yes I do understand having to detach yourself from sick family members. Hugs to you and your wife.

Frank,
I heard a slightly different version of the details about that poll. Paul supporters were allowed to vote online, while Huckabee’s folks voted in person. When the internet votes are removed, the numbers were too close for a margin of error.
Also saw an article postulating whether ‘bots have been used.

outkast (20): A poll of 110 people tells us exactly nothing (except what that finite little group of individuals believes).
Frank: There’s an old Jewish (I believe) proverb that goes something like this:
“If one man calls you an ass, ignore him. If three men call you an ass, buy a saddle.”
In the strictest sense, you’re right, of course. One poll of 110 people would tell us nothing.
But I remind you that Ron Paul has been showing extremely well in straw polls of all sizes all across the country.
There have been 40 GOP straw polls to date. Ron has finished 1st in fully half (20) of them; he’s finished 2nd in 6 polls; and 3rd in 7 of them.
So, outkast, the reality is that, out of 40 straw polls, involving thousands of voters from all across the country, Paul has won half of them, and finished in the top three slots in 33 (over 75%) of them.
So … you looking for a saddle?

My beloved hogs host SC and the ol’ ball coach tomorrow.
I’m a little scared. This game matches up to be a potential nail-biter. SC’s big bowl hopes are on the line, Houston Nutt’s job is on the line. (hopefully)

Mr_Meaner. Here’s hoping that your beloved hogs are beaten so bad that it doesn’t take me 2 1/2 hrs to settle down after the game as it did last week. But that depends on which offensive team shows up. The second half of the Tennessee game showed that they can play; just as the first half showed that sometimes they don’t.
In any case, it’s unlikely the Gamecocks will score 31 points, and the Razorbacks certainlly won’t score 35. The defense has been consistently good.

Well, Anlir, it could have to do with our (Latins’) tendency not to show up to anything early, or even on time. a half hour late is considered polite to us, so if Venezuelans set their clocks only one-half hour back, they will show up to everything on time!

Chas
SC has a great pass defense. They could have the worst in the country and still be alright against our passing game. Our defense has stepped it up the last few eeks.
It all comes down to whether SC can stop our rushing attack.
It should be a great game.
I had my emotional break-down the week we played Kentucky…So the dream is pretty much over for us.
At this point I’m almost hoping to lose out so we can get Butch Davis over here.
But
My B-ball Hogs are looking like the creme of the conference this year..
Hurry up basketball season!

Let’s see, just looking at the SEC tomorrow, here are some important games from Tennessee’s perspective:
Vandy @ FLorida (pulling for Vandy)
Troy @ Georgia (pulling for Troy)
LSU @ Bama (slight pull for Bama)
South Carolina @ Arkansas (pulling for Arkansas)
It looks like the SEC East Champion may have 3 losses, and the SEC West Champion may have 2 losses. That’s not normal.

Its a wild and wacky conference.
And to be perfectly honest, the team that looks like they’re playing the best ball right now is Mississippi State…And we still have to play them.
Unbelievable!

If Tennessee loses another football game, I’m switching my focus to basketball, where both the men and the women should have a great year.
Bruce Pearl, the men’s b-ball coach has captured the attention of the Tennessee fans. His enthusiasm has been infectious. In fact, word is that he’s stolen the thunder that’s usually gone to the football program.
I figured Houston Nutt’s job was on the line at Arkansas. They were certainly expected to be much better this year.

I love both of the Tenn. coaches. Pearl is seemingly a high-strung, fun guy.
Our new coach is the same way. He actually played in a practice game, when he benched three of our best players for not doing well in classes.
He fired up and hit several threes during the game, which drew some ooo’s from the crowd
The rumor was, he secured a commitment who, with his family happened to be in attendance that night.
I believe we’re pre-season #19.
Thats the best we’ve started since the days of Nolan Richardson

Mr_Meaner (29): Do you think that RP will run as a third party candidate against Hillary and Giuliani or Thompson?
Frank: When asked that Q in Jan-Feb of this year, Ron flatly insisted that he wouldn’t do so. But I sense a very slight softening of that position over the last month or two.
I still don’t think he will … but we’ll see. I think it would all depend on him having ginormous popular support from both parties.
