Fear God, work hard
In his column this week, Marvin Olasky discusses the fruit that neither missionary David Livingstone nor his brother-in-law lived to see — but that now may be growing in Zambia.

Fear God, work hard
Nothing like living in fear.

Psalm 33:18-22
But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.

Savedbygrace,
Those verses don’t seem to be describing someone “living in fear.”
Wonder why that is? {:~)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7

Does that mean fools despise “science”?

2 Cor 5:19,20
God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Philippians 2:12-15,,ESV
Dearest friends, you were always so careful to follow my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away you must be even more careful to put into action God’s saving work in your lives, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.
For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him. In everything you do, stay away from complaining and arguing, so that no one can speak a word of blame against you. You are to live clean, innocent lives as children of God in a dark world full of crooked and perverse people. Let your lives shine brightly before them.

When the Bible speaks about the fear of the Lord, we need to understand this in terms of its alternative, “the fear of man.” These are the only two alternatives from the Biblical perspective. Either you fear God or you fear man.
In this context, the term “fear” is more about respect, honor, worship, and things like that, not feelings of anxiety, or distress.
To fear man is to grant that certain men are more worthy of our respect than other men. The logical implication of this leads to the idea that men are more worthy than women, and adults are more worthy than children.
By contrast, those who fear God rather than men, see all people as being equally worthy of respect, equally worthy of love, equally worthy of our time, etc. Men are not more worthy than women, and adults are not more worthy than children.

Sounds like good ideas. Drop us a note (well, OK, knowing wmb, 10,000 notes) when those ideas get put into practice.

They are more often put into practice in a Christian nation than anywhere else.

Thank you KBells. I had copied Random’s comment and was planning to respond but scrolled down to yours. The sad fact is Random already knew your response was true before you made it. As usual, he feels free to mock those who do follow Christ.

KBELLS and NJLAWYER,
Thank you for your replies.
1) I don’t believe the United States is a “Christian nation.” Christianity played a significant role in the formation of this nation, and plays a considerable influence in it’s functioning today, but that is not the same thing.
A wing of a political party which has tied itself to conservative Christianity to an inappropriate degree has played a major role in setting the policy of our country for most of the decade.
The results are not causing all of the rest of that party to celebrate. Many are trying to separate themselves from it. We are left with messes which will take a long time and much expense to clean up, if we can.
I am leery of the “They [insert your favorite "they"] are so much worse than we, so we can be complacent” type of argument.
I don’t think that was a mocking or sarcastic reply. It’s just a disagreement.

Roger — These ideas are put into practice among my friends in Eugene, Oregon at Gutenberg College and the surrounding community. And during my journey among this group I met Moffet and learned about his ministry in Africa. I have personally met Moffet two times and in each encounter, I have found him to be a humble, caring man without guile.
May God bless you and surround you with folks such as these.
