Christ and the ghouls of autumn
It’s fall, and in the new upscale German Tudor “Keswick Village” a few blocks from my house, with faux gas lights and flower-festooned traffic circle, I drove smack into the effigies of men hanging on crosses. I counted at least four filler-stuffed figures with droopy heads lifted up on stakes, their arms tied horizontal to crude crossbars. The scene was surreal.
This being 21st century Pennsylvania and not Sicily at Easter time, I recognized at once that this was not the “via cruces,” and there would be no throngs in the streets commemorating the Passion of the Lord. Such a thing could never be. The city’s sensibilities would not abide the cramming down our throats of a message of sacrificial death to save us from our sins. There would be an uproar, I can hear it now.
The city’s sensibilities would, however, abide a grisly display of wanton death reminiscent of the Klan’s work, or of Sennecharib’s impaled trophies on ancient Assyria’s walls. Bring on the ghouls of autumn, and don’t scare the children with your Jesus stories.

In one of our Conn. towns, a group protested a fake “hsnging witch” at a home because it was discriminatory against witches.

It seems the world is upside down and back to front. Good is called evil and evil is called good. I am so sorry to see that death is celebrated instead of life. It seems that the only thing that causes offense any more is the Name of the One who loved the world so much He was willing to suffer and die for us.
The way things are going, it will be toatlly illegal to mention the Name Jesus at all, and all the christians will be in prison. Well, anyway, on a lighter note, it looks like my son’s biopsy turned out benign! The doctor said he would have called by now if it was cancer. Thanks to those of you who prayed for him.

i doubt there was any religious intentions. Simply scarecrows with pumpkin heads — your basic Halloween decoration. Now whether Halloween is a religious holiday or just an amusing night of fun and candy would be a different discussion.

JOANNEB,
I am glad that your son has been diagnosed as not suffering from cancer. An illness, or possible illness, in a child is a frightening and traumatic experience.
Given the history of the relationship between Christianity and people accused of witchcraft, it is perhaps not all that amusing when these uneasy topics come up.
People in America tend to seize on the Salem witchcraft trials. While those were an ugly occurrence, they are actually a rather small part of our history, and blew over fairly quickly.
This history of Christians and persecution of witches in Europe is a much larger, uglier, and longer-standing disgrace, one that involves both Catholics and Protestants.
By and large, we seem to be over such terrible events, but for those of us who are not Christians, the readiness of Christians at worldmagblog to present themselves as victims on the brink of persecution is not as persuasive to non-Christians here as many seem to think it should be.
Christians have been persecuted at many times in history and in many locations, and I do not make light of it. Christians have also done quite a bit of persecuting; often of each other.
We’re human beings; persecute is often what we do.

Right, that day is just around the corner. (rolling my eyes here).

Absolutely on the money, RN. That couldn’t have possibly been said better.

HRW,
That’s what I was thinking…
The pic looks to me like scarecrows with pumpkin-heads. It seems like a stretch to compare that to a crucifix with corpus.
