Invariably when they were camp guards they were "men" in their late teens early twenties. One might just as easily ask who then is the "real man"? The naive teen who watched as Nazis herded innocents to their deaths? The old grey and tired retiree, "upstanding member of his community" Rotary clubber, etc beloved by all who have known him these past 40 or so years? Disclaimer: I'm not saying anyone proven to have participated in genocide-- even as a camp guard-- should escape punishment.
