I think it was OK to kill it. I also think it's irresponsible for cat owners to let their cats be outside in the city. On a farm, sure, but not in the city where the cat will inevitably be in others' yards and where it will kill birds. My brother (a pastor near LA) said the one comment he made that got the most comments of any he ever made from the pulpit was a joke about cats.
