Three kinds of fools
By Andrée Seu’s reading of the biblical book of Proverbs, there are three kinds of fools: The “fist-shaking fool,” the fool whose sin does not even rise to the level of interesting, and the fool who actually means well but is . . . well, ignorant.
Does anyone you know fall into any of those categories?

At various times and life stages I know I have been ea.
You want me to name names? Where’s the congressional directory?

I believe we have had a few of the second kind here, who argue relentlessly for evolution or atheism, knowing full well that this is a Christian blog, with the majority of members adhering to the Christian viewpoint. No need to name anyone, as they have all but disappeared or been banned. The atheists/agnostics who remain tend to be nice about it and just state their points without being, well, “foolish”.

A wise perons would admit that at regular intervals they will indeed be fools.
Perhaps, given that we are limited humans, most of the times we are fools?

The word “fool” is used by Jesus in Matthew 5:22. When I read what Andree had written I immediately thought of this passage of Scripture. I believe calling anyone a ‘fool’ is dangerous, Jesus made this clear. The word “fool” or “fools” is used in other parts of the New Testament.
22- But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 – Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 – Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Mathew 5:22-24
“Christ showed the full meaning of this commandment; according to which we must be judged hereafter, and therefore ought to be ruled now. All rash anger is heart murder. By our brother, here, we are to understand any person, though ever so much below us, for we are all made of one blood. “Raca,” is a scornful word, and comes from pride: “Thou fool,” is a spiteful word, and comes from hatred. Malicious slanders and censures are poison that kills secretly and slowly. Christ told them that how light soever they made of these sins, they would certainly be called into judgment for them. We ought carefully to preserve Christian love and peace with all our brethren; and if at any time there is a quarrel, we should confess our fault, humble ourselves to our brother, making or offering satisfaction for wrong done in word or deed: and we should do this quickly; because, till this is done, we are unfit for communion with God in holy ordinances.” Matthew Henry

Peter L post 2,
but of course your post opens the door to its counter post.
Is this an approach which will be useful?
And you might look at Lynn’s “The Priests of Global Warming” to consider what the make up of WMB posters is.
To be sure WMB is run by conservative Christians.
Does that mean, however, that it is a conservative Christian blog?

Peter L – Think about it. How can anyone who denies God be anything but foolish, even if they’re “nice” about it?
And Ed/Qwerty certainly fit the mold of the “fist-shakin” fool.

Thank you, VS. Peter had me down for a minute there.

Let me clarify: The atheists/agnostics here are still fools according to the scriptures (Ps 14 comes to mind- “The fool has said in his heart there is no God.”). It is just that they are not acting like the fools Ms Seu writes about:

Andree: Praise be to God who sorts all things out with justice, so that we need not overly exert ourselves with bloviated self-defense. My conscience is clear but that does not make me innocent (1 Corinthians 4:4).
Andree is right here. None of us are innocent. We are all guilty daily of ordinary and sometimes worse sin and ought not overly exert ourselves with bloviated self defense. I wish I could, also, say that my conscience is clear, though one understands that Christ understood and died for our sins. She is, also, right that in the end all this will be sorted out, we hope with mercy.
As to types of sin, I suspect that the number vastly exceeds three.

Oh, but Hamachi, you do not want to be happy about being called a fool by God. One day, you and everyone else will bow before the throne of God and acknowledge who He is. (Phil. 2)

I prefer not to utter the “f” word personally. Mainly because I find that people who use it usually do so in a a scornful “I’m better than you” way. I think it says more about the person that utters it than the one(s) it’s directed toward. Personally, I’ve made a lot of stupid decisions in my life. So I’m not going to go around calling other people the “f” word.

I’ve often wondered why people are so worried about those who don’t share their beliefs to the point of making fun of their intelligence.

Who’s making fun of another person’s intelligence, HRW?
Oh yeah, the poster who recently called Bush “stupid” (Anlir)?

Good point!

One can be extremely intelligent, but still be a fool in the biblical sense.
As I understand it, the word fool, as used in the Bible, refers more to being morally & spiritually foolish.

“By Andrée Seu’s reading of the biblical book of Proverbs, there are three kinds of fools”
Yes! The Trinity of Fools. My church has been studying this extensively.
The First Fool, the “fist-shaking fool”. “they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble”.
Unquestionably Moe. All hammer and pliers. Never satisfied unless he gets in the last whack.
The Second “he who ‘follows worthless pursuits”…”He falls in with ‘the forbidden woman’”.
That would be Curly. Any pretty face, fresh baked pie, or get rich quick scheme and he’s after it. Consequences be damned.
“The Third Fool is the one who means well”
That’s definitely Larry. Always trying to do right but somehow he gets into trouble, usually ending up on the receiving end of a good hair-pull from Moe.

Travis – My husband, Lee, is a big 3 Stooges fan.
I married him anyway.

I have been caught actually laughing at the 3 Stooges once in a while.
I am not proud of that.
My husband’s a good guy, though, so as long as he’ll keep me, I’ll keep him, too.

Karen O post 19,
would that perhaps be the Koyne Greek word, the Armamaic word, or the Hebrew word?
I suggest that terms for humor seldom translate well.

In the interest of full disclosure and after the pain of embarrassment has subsided, I am curious as to how Ms. Seu lost her job and what ‘rules’ of conduct made that possible. With today’s heightend sensitivities and lowered sensibilities, we could all use a lesson in shoulda, woulda, couldas.
