Obama gets a boost
It’s official. Oprah Winfrey is hitting the campaign trail in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina to stump for Barack Obama. While some strategists believe Oprah “will help Obama reach stay-at-home moms and other women who do not closely follow politics,” others say the plan could backfire:
One Democratic official said: “Oprah is no doubt one of the biggest endorsements a candidate could get. The $64,000 question is: Will Iowa caucus goers appreciate a Hollywood megastar telling them who to vote for? Has she stepped into the state of Iowa before? If I were them, I’d tread carefully, not because of Oprah’s influence, but because of Iowans’ independence.”
One thing’s for sure, though: Women who wouldn’t have given a thought to going to an Obama rally before will now be scrambling for tickets so they can see their beloved talk show host.

I live in Iowa, and predict this plan will backfire. Many people here in the Hawkeye state are practical folk, so will could easily create the feeling that Obama is the establishment.

outkast post 1,
a well supported and cogent comment.
It will be fun to watch it play out.

Oprah is hugely popular. I’m shocked at how many Christian women I know watch her show regularly. My wife turned her back on it years ago. (I’m more likely to watch it if there is a particularly interesting guest.)
People read books for no other reason than that Oprah recommended them. I think the same will hold true for their voting for Obama.

“…stay-at-home moms and other women who don’t closely follow politics.”
Outkast – Are you, as a stay-at-home dad, as ignorant as we stay-at-home moms apparently are?

LOL! zing!

It is amazing the number of people who do what Okra tells them to do. I am a huge fan of hers and have followed her career for many years. I just have a problem with her throwing her clout behind any candidate, although I understand her conviction to do so.

H-2 – Were you referring to my comment as a “zing”?
If so, I’d like to point out that the zing was aimed at those who stereotype stay-at-home moms as not following politics, or other news for that matter, closely. (Among other stereotypical beliefs they have of us.)
Me just stays home buts I is purty smart sumtymz.

Kim, Oprah’s blantantly anti-Christian positions don’t bother you?

Karen, The statement you quote is silly and I thought you addressed it in a humorous way. Sorry if that isn’t clear.
Report comment to moderator
Karen: You attributed a quote to me (post 4) that I didn’t make (read post 1 again).

Well, it’s a fact that Oprah is pretty influential, especially among women. As a man, I have always admired her.
Her appearances just by herself will be a big deal. If she appears with Obama, they will be huge. With Clinton, Obama, and Edwards in a statistical dead heat in Iowa, this may be the boost that puts Obama over the top in Iowa. This is a plus for him. One thing’s for sure – it certainly won’t hurt him.

Outkast, Karen did not attribute the quote to you. (read post 4 again.) She asks if you are ignorant because of your stay at home mom gig.
Report comment to moderator
Well, since I never in my life have suggested that stay-at-home mothers are ignorant, I guess that answers that question, LonHam.

Does this thread need an interpreter?
Karen, that was a good zinger! I smiled.
I admire Oprah for many reasons but I don’t watch her show and after trying to read two of her book-club suggestions, I gave up and went back to my own choices.
However, I can admire the woman herself without losing my own common sense and doing what she suggests!

Sheesh, Outkast. Now you’ve graduated to name calling even when I help you understand something.

I’ve been at work and haven’t watched a whole lot of Okra lately. I know she got into some New Agey stuff, but I think underneath she is still a good person.
Report comment to moderator
I agree, Kim. My wife watches her when she can. My mom tapes every show. I just don’t enjoy the format. I do believe she does a lot of good with her position in life, and do respect her.

Okay, let me make myself clearer.
I was not making fun of Outkast, nor was I attributing that quote to him. The quote is in the original post.
I was merely trying to make a point about that offensive quote. Since Outkast has mentioned being an at-home dad, & is obviously informed on political topics, I addressed myself to him.
No offense intended. Sorry my attempt at humor was confusing.

Karen, I think it was only confusing to Outkast. The rest of us got the sarcasm.

No, Hamachitwo, you said “zing” as if Karen had “got me” on something. In post 18 (and through private emails today) it is obvious that she and I are on the same page, and it was YOU that is the confused one.
Thanks Karen.
Report comment to moderator
I see that in post 10.

Hamachitwo: Karen simply didn’t understand that putting something in italics and then directing comments at a certain poster indicates that the statement in italics belongs to that person they’re speaking to.
She now understands the confusion that she accidently caused, and has admitted to that and cleared things up. YOU are the only one with mud on your face.
Zing!

Outkast – Actually, I do know that. But I wasn’t thinking about that when I wrote the comment that way. Sorry ’bout that.

No need to apologize, Karen. You’re my sister in Christ, and I’m still learning to be a better brother in Christ (in spite of all the trolls).

Ok, now this is getting funny!
