The Ten Commandments?
Report comment to moderator
On ABC News today, they were telling about troops in Iraq getting ready to come home on A C-5A. I thought of Sawgunner then. If my calculations are right, he is over Europe about now. But I was wrong last time.

I’m 55 today! (And yes, I’m raving about it!)

Happy Birthday, VS. I’m not far behind you.

Any suggestions on what to serve with a Buffalo Chicken Casserole?

Happy Birthday VS
Yes! 55 is a good age.

Happy 55th birthday, VS! That one is ten years behind me!

KBells, I would suggest a salad with mixed greens, mandarin oranges, and almond slivers. Any green sald would go nicely, actually. I would use a vinegar-based dressing on it, since the casserole is probably creamy.
If you want another vegetable dish, I would choose either broccoli or green beans plain, since the casserole is a bit spicy and creamy.

KBells and Janie – I would have thought both of you were much younger!! Especially you KBells as you are the one with the little 4 year old boy, right?
Kyle – What a great suggestion on the salad. Sounds yummy!

Happy birthday, VS. I am almost exactly a year ahead of you and I think you will like being this age.

#9 VS–
I know, sometimes I can hardly believe it myself, but I have a Medicare card to prove it! (When it arrived last summer, I felt like they had sent it to the wrong person.) Everyone (husband included) tells me I look about ten years younger than I am, too. I guess it is an advantage(?), but I don’t mind at all being 65. Certainly my good health and fitness are an advantage! (Thank you, Lord.)

Good morning everyone and welcome back from the long weekend!
Happy Birthday to you VS!
Here is the winner of last the “College Football Saturday” Contest:
Peter L
It was a 3-way tie, so I had to use the tiebreaker, which was the Tennessee/Kentucky game. Peter L picked TN to win, so he is the winner.
Congratulations Peter L! Here is your hot-off-the campfire, warm, gooey *digital* S’more
This coming weekend will be the final weekend of the “College Football Saturday” Contest. I will be selecting 5 games from the conference championships.
In other news, I had my MRI this morning of my vocal cords. It was ok, except for having to lay perfectly still for 30 minutes and the injection (I hate needles). Next step is waiting for the results. If all is ok, I will get an injection of gel into my vocal cords and hopefully be talking soon.

Happy birthday, VS. And thank the Lord talk of football is done for a few days now.

One day not too long ago on Whirled Views we were talking about whether there were examples in the Bible of someone reporting a direct answer to a specific prayer. Yesterday I was reading in Genesis about Abraham and Isaac, and I read the chapter where Abraham sends his servant to get a bride for Isaac. It goes into great detail of his prayer, and how it was answered, and then he recounts the entire thing, both prayer and how it was answered, to Rebekah’s family.

Great suggestion Kyle A. I was thinking maybe a salad. I just wasn’t sure what kind.

Well folks, I guess this is my “I won’t be around as much” posting. I start a job as a sales coordinator tomorrow. I have already been warned they monitor phone calls, and “tape them for training purposes”. I will not have access to the internet from work. Guess that will take care of my goofing off time. I am sick at my stomach that I will not have the freedom I have had and be able to go to Chloe at any time, but I also need a steadier income than real estate provides. This will be a salary plus position, so at least I can budget to some degree.

Chas, we had the misunderstanding about the meaning of the word “sacrament” a few days ago. I stumbled across this webpage recently, from the Reformer Francis Turretin (actually from later in the 16th century, the generation after Luther and Calvin), and I thought it might be helpful: http://www.fivesolas.com/ftsacrament.htm

I did get that book done and got more out of it than the Kite Runner. It was intense but, after reading the Flyboys and the Japanese life view, and Infidel, and after befriending some Muslims over the years, and seeing people in other cultures, it was very believable in that different people come from different world views. We may look at it as absolutely atrocious behavior (and it is) but we ought to try to understand why they think that way. Brought up in a world that sees things a certain way, a person is not going to change just because somebody tells him he is wrong. It takes a change of the heart and we all know Who is in charge of that.

I thought musing was joking with his movie guess. I tried watching that movie a few years ago (it was way too boring when I was young), but could not watch it all. The film makers took too many liberties with the actual story. It is one of those movies that would be much better in a shorter version.
Happy Birthday, VS.
Thank you Anlir. It sure goes good with turkey sandwich! Have you ever tried using chocolate grahams for a s’more? I have not, but think it would be great!
I guess it was a good weekend for the underdogs. Now we Mizzou fans can only hope that the second meeting with Oklahoma goes better than the first did. Wouldn’t it be groat to have two teams at the championship who have never been in 1st at the end?
Report comment to moderator
Kim, Good luck. Even if a job is not exactly what you wanted, you get experience and make connections that can sometimes lead to a better position. Just because you have a job doesn’t mean you have to stop looking. My first media job was in the bookkeeping department. Sorry if that’s kind of lecturey (I know that not a real word), but now that every one knows how old I am I have to start sounding more like a grown up. Random is the only one who can get away with acting like a 13 year old.

Peter L,
Congrats to Mizzou! I watched the game and it was a great win for them. Heard it was the second largest crowd ever for Arrowhead Stadium. Now they must dispose of OK.
I’m thinking it could be Missouri vs Ohio State for the National Championship. If MO loses, it could be Ohio State vs West Virginia.
Report comment to moderator
Or it could be Missouri-WV, which would be the most fun b/c, as Peter L mentioned, they would be two teams which have never been there before.

What do you want to bet that Trent Lott will be back in 2 years as a K Street lobbyist? Just hide and watch.
The Republicans now have to defend 23 seats in the Senate. Democrats only have to defend 12. I think the Repubs see the writing on the wall, which is why so many of them are bailing.

I’m sure Chas is right. I think what will be missed is Lott’s network. Meaning he is a well connected and very powerful member of the good ol’ boys. His replacement, depending on who it is of course, will probably not be quite up to Lott’s level of influence for a while.

I know I haven’t done a movie review in awhile, so here’s one from the movie I saw over the weekend.
I went and saw “Beowulf” in 3-D. This is a re-telling of the lengthy poem (circa 8-11th century). It’s about the warrior Beowulf who shows up to slay the evil monster Grendle, who has been terrorizing King Hrothgar’s kingdom. He kills Grendle, but then makes a deal with Grendle’s mother and becomes king, replacing Hrothgar, who dies. I won’t give away any more of the plot than that.
Of note, Ray Winstone plays Beowulf. Anthony Hopkins plays King Hrothgar, and Robin Wright Penn plays Queen Wealthow.
The movie is showing in both regular and 3-D versions. I recommend the 3-D version, which costs $2 extra. Also, it’s completely digital, like “300″ was.
Ok, here’s the “nitty-gritty”:
Sex – no actual sex, but there is some nudity, though it’s digital animation.
Violence – a fair amount. Some of it’s is bloody.
Language – no swearing that I recall. Probably a “wench” or two.
Intensity – mild to moderate. More like an “Indiana Jones” movie.
As always, my recommendation is based on two things:
1. Is it worth paying full price? No. Go to the matinee and pay the up-charge for 3-D.
2. Would I see it again? Probably not.
This is definitely not a movie for anyone under 13. It was an ok movie, but not anything to write home about. The only thing that made it worth it was the 3-D.
All in all, on a 1-10 scale, I’d give this movie a 5.

Happy 55th VS!
That does sound like a good year.
Enjoy the whole thing!

My husband and I feel as if we could sleep for days! It must be all the activity.
We had originally planned on going to Colombia for R and R, and to celebrate our 20th anniversary.
Instead, we helped my now elderly parents get to Nashville to rush to my sister’s side when we were half way through our rest.
Then it was road trips, a funeral, grief, travel home, a house guest, thanksgiving, and trips to the airport.
We are SO tired!!! I wonder if we’ll ever feel energetic and awake again. I woke up from the sofa before he did. Could sleep forever under Christmas tree lights.

OK Folks. I am at home tonight. I go into “lockdown” tomorrow. I am excited about the potential earnings but I am depressed at having to BE somewhere. Answer to someone. Please pray for me over the next few days as I adjust. I will definately check in when I can. Anlir thanks for the movie review. I was thinking about seeing it, but if I recall the poem is painful enough. I can’t imagine making a movie from it.
Report comment to moderator
Kim,
I will pray for you.
I’ve been out of the loop for a while.
What do you mean by lockdown?
Report comment to moderator
Kim,
I imagine it will be hard to get up in the morning and be somewhere. Even just my 4 days off made it hard for me to get up this morning. After 4 days of sleeping in until I felt like getting up, it was difficult enough to get up today. Being a night person, I could stay up until 2 a.m. and then sleep until 10 or 11 a.m. That would be perfect for me. But alas, offices don’t operate on those kind of hours. I usually shoot for getting to work at 8 a.m., and usually end up getting there around 9 a.m., occasionally a little later.
Anyway, the first few days of a new job are always difficult, right? So much to remember and so much to do it seems! You’ll meet new people and you’ll feel like everyone is looking at you for awhile. But in a few months, it’ll be old hat to you and you won’t think anything about it. It happens to everyone at a new job.
Try to go to bed early because you don’t want to oversleep on your first day!

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone! I had a good day.
My son gave me Alan Jackson’s “Precious Memories” CD – Alan’s very unique voice and his guitar and a piano – singing 15 old-time hymns. It’s beautiful.
My 5-yr old grandson insisted I have a cake and he told me “Because I love you so very much Grandma, I’ll blow out the candles for you.” So he had us hold hands, close our eyes and make a wish and then he blew out the candles. I only gave him 5 to put on – I didn’t want the cake to be consumed by fire.

Going around the internet, I found the following article:
Congressman Gary Ackerman of New York gave Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice an earful at Congressional hearing on the 2008 State Department Budget. After Rice repeatedly bemoaned the government’s lack of Arabic translators, Ackerman wondered if it had something to do with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
Though Rice said her department doesn’t follow such discriminatory standards, Ackerman quipped:
It seems that the military has gone around and fired a whole bunch of people who speak foreign languages – Farsi and Arabic… For some reason, the military seems more afraid of gay people than they are [of] terrorists, but they’re very brave with the terrorists. If the terrorists ever got hold of this information, they’d get a platoon of lesbians to chase us out of Baghdad.
Approximately forty House Representatives are urging the Pentagon to reconsider its ban on gay Arabic linguists. Spearheaded by Representative Marty Meehan – the Massachusetts politico who regularly fights “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – the collective asks the Pentagon to justify booting 58 gay Arabic linguists.
Speaking on his own behalf, Meehan pondered:
At a time when our military is stretched to the limit and our cultural knowledge of the Middle East is dangerously deficient, I just can’t believe that kicking out able, competent Arabic linguists is making our country any safer.
The outcry comes after government officials fired three more gay linguists, including Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Benjamin…
Benjamin claims that the Navy wanted him to sign a contract denying his homosexuality, but his lawyer advised against it.
—-Isn’t that a hoot? Especially considering that Ms. Rice has never, ever been linked to any, uh hem, “man”. Oops, apparently, she has lived with the same woman for 12 years and they jointly own the house that they live in “together”. Oh, I’m sure it’s all totally “innocent”. I mean, who could possibly work for a President who wants to put discrimination into the constitution against their own kind. It’s not the same with Cheney. After all, it’s only his “daughter”. Oh no, I just realized, Bush seems to be “surrounded”.

Chas and everyone else:
This morning at 6am we all did a “bag drop” in anticipation of leaving for the Ali AL-Saleem Air Base where we’d leave for our flight to the States.
Nope. Not gonna happen. Our bird was scrubbed due to mechanical failures. I assume a new aircraft will be tagged for us and tomorrow will go as today should have gone. One more day away from Cindy, Tess(6) and Helena Kate (5)!
In the meantime here I am at beautiful Camp Virginia, Kuwait. This a.m. since so many of us anticipated LEAVING lotsa guys and gals tossed soap, shampoo, shower shoes/sandals, pillows etc in the trash. Of course as we learned our flight was deferred many wanted to go retrieve those items from the dumpster but the local trash crews had already come around. Somewhere in Kuwait an enterprising Arab is now selling slightly used running shoes, pillows, blankets etc!!

#53 I would not recommend any soldier gay or straight become a linguist. The promotion points are very high. The whole time you’re in training you cannot be promoted beyond E4.
Once you are graduated and sent to your assigned unit, you most likely will not ever be given regular “language maintenance” practice/training. Linguists are as likely to be sent to drain truck oil or mow the grass as they are to actually do the job they contracted for.

While I was at the Defense Language Institute there were a number of soldier/trainees that nearly all of us suspected of being gay/lesbian. It was the most widely known “secret” among the troops. Mannerisms, affect, close-cropped haircuts (among females) all were big tip offs. A quite butchy female–a sheriff’s deputy before enlisting–often spoke of a conveniently out of state fiance. We would all wink-wink play along with her act.
Admittedly the anti-homo policies of the military most likely stem from the blackmail opportunities and/or security risks inherent to being outted. (McClean and Burgess were two homo Brit spies, and their escapades probably did much to instill the anti gay policies)

When I was in the service, I took a German class while in Germany and, with my VERY limited German, I was constantly called to “Translate”. I talked less German than a baby. So I suspect your linguists being limited to the motor pool is imagination hard at work. Sorry.

#60: blackmail opportunities and/or security risks inherent to being outted.
And of course, common sense tells you that if the military would stop discriminating, then soldiers COULDN’T be blackmailed. But who follows “common sense”? It’s not that common.
