Muslim charities meet local needs
American Muslims are expanding their charity efforts, Chicago Tribune says, and that may speed the assimilation of Muslim immigrants.
Instead of simply building Islamic centers and building the Muslim community, Muslim charities are expanding their efforts to help all needy, regardless of their faith. In Chicago, over 50 mosques have joined with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to give away over 25,000 pounds of meat. Organizations like the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, The Inner-City Muslim Action Network, and The Downtown Project have all expanded to include services for non-Muslims.
Experts say the shift shows that Muslim immigrants are beginning to think of themselves as Americans. Omar McRoberts, associate professor of sociology at the University of Chicago, told Chicago Tribune, “These sorts of shifts should be of interest at least as much as people have been interested in and drawn into depictions of Muslims as uniformly violent and worthy of suspicion. … To pay attention to only one kind of depiction and to ignore alternative self-depictions coming out of Muslim communities is sort of a dereliction of citizenship.”
Some Muslim charities have been the target of suspicion in the past. The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development came under suspicion last year for supporting organizations linked with Hamas, but the trial ended in a mistrial last October. The bulk of Muslim charity still goes to international aid, but attention to local needs is increasing.
MuslimCharities.com explains that Islam requires its devotees to give away 2.5% of their possessions to “take from those who have wealth and give it away to those who do not … to balance social inequality.” Islamic law includes all impoverished people, not just Muslims, among the people Muslims have a duty to aid. Charity, the website says, “is a way of bringing justice to society. And justice is the essence of religion.”

Anyone have any data on how much charity goes from Muslims to non-Muslims (or how it stacks against us “infidels” and our giving)?

One of the reasons Hamas and even Osama bin Laden are so popular is because of their charitable work. Syria and Iran gained a stranglehold on Lebanon through charity.
Are these charities monitored in some way to know where the money goes?

Xion – Wouldn’t such monitoring be racist?

I wouldn’t be surprised if some Christians had put Muhammad up to inventing his religion just so they could have a reliable false faith they could always feel superior to.
This is a completely ridiculous conspiracy theory. Let’s see long it takes for somebody to believe it.

It’s probably fine with me, as long as the government isn’t the one doing the “charity” work. It would be interesting, however, to know how many non-Muslim groups they give to.

BTW, Random, Christians don’t feel superior to ANYONE. We realize that ALL OF US are fallen creatures, totally dependent upon the grace of God for our daily sustenance.

The Muslim charities should be subject to exactly the same law as other charities in America.

The Muslim charities ARE already subject to exactly the same law as other charities in America. That’s why there have been some trials of people who have done some underhanded things by giving the money to terrorist organizations. Some have resulted in convictions, some acquittals. But the government does investigate.
That said, rather than asking for a comparison between “us” and “them,” I’m going to keep an open mind about this. If they are trying to fit in, that’s a good thing. And who knows, maybe the concept of this sort of charity will rub off on the Muslims abroad. If the Muslims here can learn to help non-Muslims, maybe there’s hope that those “at home” will learn to treat others as fellow human beings rather than infidels. If we want them to change that attitude, I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt and let them go about making the change. Something has to bring about change in that religion. Charity is a lot better than IEDs.
Don’t we as Christians give alcoholics and drug addicts and adulterers, etc., a second chance, or a third, or more? How many times have we said that they should prove they are the “religion of peace?” I leave them to their proofs.
