The new fluorescents are supposed to last upto 10 years. I bought a large pack of 12 which on a per bulb price was similar to incandescents. They are as bright as a regular 60 watt but my wife prefers three way lights topping up to 120 watts -- far too much brightness for a man who spent too much time in basement bars. They turn on immideiately with no flickering - I read with them and have no problems. fluorescents can be dropped off at our local transfer site for free.

I can't even imagine this light bulb thing actually taking effect, but I'm horrified that it passed. I too need plenty of light (and I'm only 40), and fluorescents just aren't as good for reading (which is what I do for a living). One advantage of being self-employed now is that I don't have fluorescents (just in my laundry room, where it doesn't matter). I'll wait and see before I stock up, but if this seems set to stick, then I'll have to stock up somehow. (I don't have much storage space in this house, and don't really want to rent a storage locker. :) )

I've never bought or used one myself, but I know there are light bulbs known as "full spectrum light," which is supposed to simulate daylight. I just checked the website of one of the companies that makes them, and they make them in both incandescent and fluorescent types. So if the law requires only fluorescent bulbs (and just because a law is passed now doesn't mean it won't get changed or delayed before five years is up), there will be bulbs available that are much better than the fluorescents typically in use today. Right now they're fairly expensive because it's a niche product (otherwise I'd get them), but if there is more demand the price will go down.

Not to worry. The Chinese will still make incandescent lights, and whoever is in power at the time will be so afraid of offending them. Besides, if Wal-Mart wants to sell incandeswcents, who has the will to say no.

I have to wear glasses with a special UV filter on them in fluorescent light from working under bare fluorescent lights as a teen. I HATE the lights, and get awful headaches from them. I guess it is time to stock up on incandescents.

I can see it now, about five years down the line we will have a “War on Incandescent Lights”. The Mafia and other criminal gangs will be dealing in incandescent light bulbs in a black market that will have us baby boomers as customers. You think contraband coming across the Southern border is bad now, just wait!

Groucho Marx is one of my favorite putdown artists. These are attributed to him:

Groucho: " I'd love to help you out; which way did you come in?"
Victim: "I didn't come here to be insulted!"
Groucho: "Oh? Where do you usually go?"

Pauline,
I think he's making a distinction between the first plane hitting, which we didn't see on the air, and the second plane hitting, which we all saw live because the cameras were still trained on the buildings.

Louisville recycles everything known to man except CFLs. I'm stocking up, as I said above.

For any of you that like history or just know who in history they like, who in history, from around the Middle Ages to now, is your favorite king?
My favorite is Gustavus Adolphus (Gustav Adolph),
the King of Sweden in the 1600s who was known as the Lion of the North. He was the main leaders of the Protestants against the Catholics in the Thirty Years War.
I see him as an admirable character because he was a Christian, loved by his troops, a military genius (considered one of the ablest generals ever by Napoleon Bonaparte and Car von Clausewitz), knew 9 languages (7, 9, around there), held the nobility in check from trampling on the peasants, and other things, not the least of which was bravery, as he would often lead the charge in a battle)
A hero and role model in about every sense, you could say.

Re: fluorescent bulbs - we tried the "curly" kind and one blew up in my husband's face (fortunately no injuries) - that was the end of that experiment for us

I just found out at our Cub Scout den's visit to the "transfer station" (where the trash and recycling are processed) that I can take my old fluorescent bulbs there, and it's no charge for residential use (businesses have to pay to take theirs). I'm surprised a larger city like Louisville doesn't have a similar program.

Re: footage of 9/11 - I remember watching the TV for well over half an hour that morning, and they described the planes hitting. I can't say for sure now whether or not I saw footage of the plane hitting but I thought I had, so I can easily imagine saying I had seen it, but being mistaken if in fact all I saw was the damage to the towers but not the plane itself.

Michelle, we just replaced our 1977 refrigerator! I was very tempted to get a drawer, but decided to go with a top freezer. Why do you not like your drawer? I'm not sure of the savings in electricity yet as I haven't gotten my bill since I have had it.

I believe the old bulbs are out for the next year here in MN. I better stock up myself as I usually need a lot of light for reading. This may end up being a big problem for senior citizens. Anyone older than 50 requires twice the light to see, according to my daughter, who is an interior designer. Every decade the need for more light increases. But if there is a big market for better bulbs, I guess someone will start making them.
