Christmas Meditation 12.22
A special Christmas meditation:
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

I love the compression in this passage, how it moves from the palace to the field, from the center of worldly power to the coming of a new Power, announced by those wonderful words,
“fear not.”

“Fear not” is repeated many, many times in Scripture. It is good advice.

Isaiah 43:5, “Fear not, for I am with you,” is the verse my kindergartener’s class learned a week or so ago. He’s been walking around repeating it several times a day.
I think it’s interesting that “Fear not” is the first thing many of the angel messengers say to those to whom they are sent.
Luke’s attention to detail in recording the events of our Savior’s birth is wonderful. I love the way this passage ends: ““Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Good news of great joy, indeed!

It is fascinating to see how the course of worldly events intertwine with the sovereign will of God to cause a poor couple to travel back to the city of David to fulfill prophesies from centuries before.
RC Sproul calls this ‘confluence’, i.e. streams that flow together. God is so powerful that his invisible hand can influence world events without anyone knowing about it and yet the people involved are still fully responsible for their actions.
Apparently, such things aren’t difficult for someone who is all powerful.

mac – When confronted with angelic messengers, “fear not”s necessary instruction to anyone who has any grasp on how unworthy we all are of anything but God’s condemnation.

I am so comforted by his offer of peace, this year especially.
I need his peace. It sustains me.
Thank you for sending Jesus, Lord.
