Good morning!
Today’s quote is from a former governor: ”We must consider that we shall be as a City upon a Hill, the eyes of all people are upon us; so that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world, we shall open the mouths of enemies to speak evil of the ways of God…we shall shame the faces of many of God’s worthy servants, and cause their prayers to be turned into Curses upon us…”

It was 8 degrees this morning in Canton Ohio. In Peninsula, Ohio it was 5 degrees. In Cleveland, there is a heat wave going on. It is up to 10 degrees. Break out the tropical shorts and umbrellas.

Heath Ledger.. what a tragedy. Suicide when you’ve just become a parent sure seems to double the sadness. I believe a pop singer Burt Cocaine from few years back committed suicide with his daughter only a few years old

Correction: Helpmeet sez his name was Curt Cobaine

I don’t think Heath Ledger committed suicide. I think he may have been depressed and that he mixed too many prescription pills, but I don’t think he intended to kill himself, certainly not based on the facts we have so far. What I found strange was that they didn’t call 911 immediately. There’s some doubt as to whether this man was still alive when he was found, is there not? Just think, if the maid had awakened him when she heard him snoring hours before(not that I’m blaming her that she didn’t), he might not have died. I think his body couldn’t metabolize what he took. He did have a drug problem (so far they haven’t found non-prescription drugs in him), and this is why his ladyfriend left him and took their child with her, but you’d think that would have opened his eyes enough that he would have sought real help. He had everything to live for! It’s really sad that people do these things to themselves.

These poor celebrity housekeepers. I think the first person after RFK to see Marilyn Monroe dead was Marilyn’s maid as well.

I dont know if WORLD will link to it, but at Townhall dot com, MICHAEL MEDVED has a great piece entitled “6 Myths about John McCain”
Sounds like Michael is a PR flak for the McCain machine, but I dont think Medved would publish stuff unless he verified its veracity.
Anxious to hear anyone else’s opinion of it.

Just some vague thoughts for people who would like one more thing to pray about. We are so delighted with our little family that we are thinking of expanding it through further adoption. The kids are absolutely excited about the idea and have been suggesting that for months. We have always wanted a lot of kids so… God will, as always, have to work out the details but we are interesed in suggestions.
Report comment to moderator
I don’t know if this is possible, but those pregnancy centers that Carenet supports — do they do private adoptions or keep a list of people who would like to adopt a child that is not aborted? Or perhaps they can give you the name of adoption agencies that they recommend to women. (I don’t really know what they do, perhaps Michell does.)

Mumsee, go for it! The more the merrier I always say;)

Sawgunner, I went to the townhall.com and read the six myths. If that’s all true (1-5), the McCain people have not done a good job of getting that out there! It does read like a PR piece. I wasn’t exactly happy with the immigrant stance, but when I hit “back” and came across Pat Buchanan calling him “AmnestyMcCain” or “AmnestyJohn,” (whichever), I winced. Pat Buchanan is a little bit TOO far right for me. If it really is between McCain and Romney, I still don’t know which one I’ll pull the lever on, but I wouldn’t be too upset if the other guy wins. I’ve often wondered why I don’t hear more about Citizens Against Government Waste. McCain was in on that, too.

NJLawyer,
We were thinking more along the lines of taking in the teen moms who have chosen not to abort and no longer have a home, and the older children sibling groups that end up in foster care due to nobody wanting that many at once or older kids. Hubby is thinking of setting up a nonprofit thing (I was going to tap you lawyers for direction on that if we get that far) with the board of directors and a donation place for some of those philanthropists who might see the need for a second bathroom for ten kids and three pregnant moms and an older couple.
Adios, that is what we have thought, but working with “the system” means checking all the boxes. See above about enough bathrooms to satisfy the social workers. There is the great outdoors of course..

I don’t know about others, but as for myself I have been fighting a contract deadline. This has been going on for the past few months and has another month to go.
Making a living is such a royal pain.
I guess it beats the alternative.
Anyway, that is why I am neither here much nor very creative when I am. It is hard to be creative or profound when ones eyes are propped open with toothpicks.
I have been gone from home so much that my wife asked for identification the other day, before she would let me in the cotton-picking front door. No kidding. Women are not as subtle as they used to be about this sort of thing.
Used to be they would just burn your supper or rip up your favorite pair of old jeans for rags or something when they got mad at you for not being around home enough.
Now they ask for identification.

I’ve noticed the WV threads have been light on comments but have wondered if it isn’t due to a larger variety of topics on other threads, especially the “Something Light” and the “Rants and Raves”?
Report comment to moderator
My assumption was the same as VS’s–we’re on the other threads more lately? I’ve been more of a lurker lately–not much to say that hasn’t been said better before I get there.

The PCCs I’ve worked with outsource the adoption end for several reasons, not the least of which is to remove any appearance of influence on young women’s choices. We always had a list of attorneys or organizations for interested people.
20 years ago, the center where I worked had a woman volunteer who did adopt one of the client’s children. Two years later when the client showed up pregnant again, she asked the volunteer to take her second child.
“What could I do?” The volunteer said. “Pass on my daughter’s sibling?” So she and her husband adopted a second time, noting however that she hoped that would be the last one . . .
Generally, though, we discourage volunteers who are actively looking to adopt–so as to not put added pressure on the clients. But we all know someone looking to adopt, if we were asked–probably just like you all know families looking for children.

Faithful wives, I have to come on here and vent for just a moment (maybe this should go on rants and raves). I hope you will allow me to be completely transparent for a moment. In public, and on here, I always *try* to make a point to be respectful of my husband. I love him dearly, and he has an enormous amount of responsibility, so I understand that my position as a helpmeet is extremely important. I don’t ever want to damage our testimony for the Lord by being disrespectful of him by my speech.
BUT, I am risking it right now because I truly feel the need to get it out. Ladies, feel free to “admonish” me as needed…8*(
I think I mentioned earlier that I am struggling with the same health issues I did last year. This makes me extremely fatigued and sleepy, nauseous and dizzy, and irritable. (What a lovely combination, I know…) BUT, I am really trying to keep up with my duties at home, and in support of my husbands ministry. I did a lot of “behind-the-scenes” stuff for hubby today as well. He came home for 10 minutes (between work and another obligation that will keep him away till very late tonight), and found the 2 things that I did NOT do today. This caused him to become very angry. He is a godly man, but when he is angry he tends to think of “verbal” things to say that he knows will hurt me. In college, I struggled with an eating disorder and overexercise to keep “skinny” (hubby makes it know he likes me that way). Though I have mastered that disorder *physically*, I have not mastered it *emotionally* (if that makes sense). So when hubby has had a bad day and is upset at me, he likes to remind me of what I *used* to look like (ie..my skinny days). I don’t know why, but tonight it just really really hurt, and I went off by myself for a good cry.
Well, I will probably regret writing this later, but it just had to come out.
Blessings, all….

Too many posts. I’d say limit the blog to 10 posts per day. One per hour or so. Pass the posts around to the other contributors so that only the best topics make the cut. Once a topic is bumped to the next page the commenting slows down.
The Friday poem thing doesn’t get a lot of traffic.
Plus I noticed that the blog has settled into just a few dozen people who hang around all day. It seems to to have turned into a nice little club that is hard to break into.
Some feel like they have something to contribute to every topic. There aren’t really a whole lot of new commentors.

I agree. There seems to be too much to read & try to keep up with. I sometimes spend too long on the Front Page before I even hit the blog.
I’ve even been thinking of “giving up” the blog (& the Front Page), cuz it’s just too time-consuming trying to keep up.

I think with the new sidebar with a listing of all the latest blog entries, that the commenting may pick up. It has made navigating so much easier. Now I can see at a glance what I want to look at, and perhaps contribute to.

I know there are a lot of Peggy Noonan fans on WoW.
So what does everyone think of her column today, where she says President Bush “destroyed the Republican Party”?

MakeItMan- Thanks for the StrongBad link. My teen boys find him hysterical, and were very impressed when they found me watching it. Quite humorous. They also showed me that there are extras hiding at the end, so scan around for hot spots if you didn’t already. (Whisper quiet hamster wheel)

Lynn- I read regularly, but post rarely. Even if the discussions are cooling, how is the traffic? I read some posts completely, but skim others. I enjoy the Friday Poem, though I rarely comment on it either. I find that if I comment I spend too much time here checking to see if anyone has responded to my comment. (Vanity, vanity.) And someone usually says what I was going to say, but better.

I have noticed that WV traffic has lessened of late.
I have been really busy entertaining guests and getting back to normal and starting a new painting class.
But, a few times that I have been available, I’ve gone on WV only to find that there was some argument that I was not at all interested in, or some discussion on a subject for which I didn’t have any real contribution.
I enjoy WV, and believe the traffic will pick up. But, more threads have spread people out more. I thought this was done intentionally. There are more forums than there used to be.
Still, I think the traffic will pick up.
I liked the movie quotes. They kept things light.

#31 I think Noonan has a valid point. Lets look at Bush’s domestic efforts: budget busting Great Society projects like free prescriptions for retirees. The horrific unconstitutional NCLB (Thank you Sen Kennedy and Sen McCain!) No vetos whatsoever of any of the various Big Govt Conservative pork projects.
We dont need a GOP, we need a Grand New Party. One that would follow up on the Goldwater/Reagan vision: lower taxes, abolition of Dept of Ed, Dept of Energy. Greater reliance on consumer choice and free markets to “solve” crises in healthcare, energy etc. Let the state’s re-assume responsibility for all the functions the constitution doesnt explicitly enumerate to the Federal govt. With his main preoccupation being fighting a war against fanatical Jihadis, President Bush has been content to let domestic issues like spending and taxes be the exclusive purview of Congress
Its no wonder that Reaganites like Noonan are disappointed
