Democrats down to two
As we head toward Super Tuesday, the Democrats have narrowed their field of candidates down to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, with John Edwards “suspending” his campaign today “so that history can blaze its path.” (Technically, there are still three Democratic candidates, if you count Mike Gravel.) According to a recent Associated Press–Yahoo poll, four in 10 Edwards supporters would pick Clinton as their second choice, while a quarter would go with Obama.

If the Yahoo poll is correct then that leaves 35% of Edward supported who will either, stay home, hold their nose, or possibly switch sides.
Just enough to make November even more interesting. I can’t wait!

Metanoia – the electorate is sufficiently polarized that most Edwards supporters will still show up and vote D (so as to vote against the R, if nothing else). THe same goes for R voters whose preferred candidate does not end up being the nominee.
The differences between the spectrum of D candidates is relatively small and the whole spectrum is to the left of the whole spectrum of R candidates (whose differences are also relatively small). Any D or R voter is as likely to vote in November in order to vote against the opposite party candidate as for the same party candidate.

KRM:
I bet a number of R folks, like me, stay home unless we have a clear choice.

The choices may not be as clear as we would prefer, but there will be a substantial gulf between the two nominees regardless of who they end up being. Staying home rather than voting for the “lesser of two evils” is the same thing as voting for the “greater of two evils”.

There’s no place like home.

Damn shame.

America needs Edwards as AG or the next Justice.
Meanwhile, the Democratic party needs Edwards right now to help new representatives and senators start out their congressional careers as New Dealers.
The rap against Edwards was that he didn’t start out where he ended up. By that, the keepers of the records mean that Edwards started out in the senate as a conservative Southerner. Accurate observation, but hardly an imaginative insight into an emblematic American biography.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. I think the bottom line was the lack of money to continue his quest. Unless one is independently wealthy and willing to spend that money, it becomes impossible to continue with so little support in the polls and voting numbers. The big donors stop giving to the lower tiered candidates, and funnel their money to the candidate(s) who have the best chance of winning. I think he planned to stay in until after Super Tuesday, but the lack of money forced him to make the decision sooner.
Edwards would make a fine head of Health & Human Services in a Democratic administration.
I am saddened by his exit, but I understand.
Now the Democratic party moves to a historic first: either a woman or a black man will be the standard bearer for the President of the United States. Either will make a fine nominee and an even finer President!

I don’t know Anlir, Edwards just didn’t seem to generate a lot of enthusiasm this time. I like him and I hope he ends up in a place where he can be effective.

This makes it all the more certain that Obama is finished come Tuesday night.

As a member of the white male oppressor class, Edwards was at a distinct disadvantage running against two Certified Oppressed Victims of White Males, a black and a woman. His only chance was to announce that he’s gay.

Night Train, too true.

I hope Edwards will just go away. I’m sure his ego wont permit that.

Surely, even his dog doesn’t trust Edwards! He makes even Bill Clinton look honest and forthright.

Night Train keeps telling us that the voters in the Dem primaries are racists and won’t vote for Obama next Tuesday.
The thought of Edwards on the Supreme Court — well, I feel a migraine coming on.
I trust KRM’s advice and hope everyone will keep his post at No. 4 in mind that sitting out the election is really voting for the greater of two evils. Conservatives accomplish nothing by enabling the other side. It’s spiteful, too. You could at least limit the damage.

Billary and Hussein are probably the two most desirable candidates from a conservative standpoint. Billary will only be concerned with re-election, so she will tend centrist to maximize her pole numbers. Hussein is too much of a lightweight to actually change anything. And if either of them win, we still get the global cachet of electing a minority. Thank goodness we no longer have a threat from a true wacky ideologue like Edwards.

“Democrats down to two.”
This is misleading. John McCain is still going and that makes three.
