Woman, thou art free!
So says Oprah Winfrey, who over the weekend told women viewers they should not feel guilty about supporting a man over a woman for president:
“Being free means you get to think for yourself,” she said, “and you get to decide for yourself what to do.”
Responding to criticism she received after stumping for Barack Obama, Winfrey said she’s not a traitor to her gender, as some had alleged: “I’m just following my own truth, and that truth has led me to Barack Obama.”

She also said she was not supporting Barak Obama because he is black. Yeah, right. If he were white she probably would not be campaigning for him. She might still support him, but not as enthusiastically.

If any woman voted for Hillary just because she is a woman they would be just as bad a man who didn’t because she is.
I know this is putting a lot of faith in the electorate, but, sheesh, we don’t need Oprah to tell us we should vote for someone based on the issures and their ability to deal with those issues.
I’m not vote for Obama or Clinton tomorrow and feeling guilty about it had not even crossed my mind.

“Following my own truth” was a phrase that California’s first lady, Maria Schriver, beat to death at the Obama rally yesterday. She endorsed Obama.
She’s not following her husband’s truth, since he recently endorsed McCain (nor should she have to, by the way).
But what was that question Pontius Pilate asked again?

Would it be alright if we “followed our own truth” in deciding why Oprah has been “dating” Stedman for well over a decade while having no interest in getting married, while at the same time she’s rarely seen without her longtime companion, Gayle King?

Of course we’re free to vote our consciences!
Why would the powers that be in the women’s movement believe otherwise? Seems to me that they have a convoluted concept of freedom.
Night Train,
I understand what you are insinuating, but I wish we’d all mind our own business when it comes to other peoples private lives. It’s the morbid curiosity of “news makers” that puts this stuff out.
Why should I be curious?
It’s none of my business, and I prefer to keep it that way!
Aren’t you tired of that kind of reporting? I know I am. Wouldn’t it be nice if sex was nobody’s business but our own. I think it would be nice not to have to see it on the big and little screens, or be told by experts how and how often.
I’m for putting it all behind closed doors…where it belongs.

Oprah declares:
“Being free means you get to think for yourself,” she said, “and you get to decide for yourself what to do.”
I wonder if Oprah wonders how many people, especially women, she might influence by her endorsement of O.

“I’m just following my own truth,…” Great post-modernism, invent your own truth.

Everything about this smacks of New Age mumbo jumbo.
Interesting that the same people who uphold Affirmative Action say that you don’t necessarily have to vote for a candidate just because he is part of a racial minority or because he is a she.
It’s called consistency, my liberal friends. Check it out!

If she had gone with Hillary would she be a trailor to her race?

We’re talking about a matter of opinion (which candidate is better), not objective fact. I don’t think it qualifies as post-modernism here.

It doesn’t negate their ability to make up their own minds for her to publicly declare her own preference. Influence is not compulsion, even with Oprah.

SteveG, I think we are talking about the word truth.” There’s no such thing as a person’s “own truth.”

Harpo & Gayle. Has a ring to it.

Very true, Steve – Still – Oprah is a very strong and intelligent woman and she has to know that her public endorsement is going to cause other women who aren’t so strong to vote for O “because Oprah is doing so.”
Just an observation.

Ha! Women aren’t free. Don’t be silly. Men own women and children.
It’s nice Oprah has her own truth.
I noticed the native americans and asians have no one to vote for. Poor people. They’ve been disenfranchised!

VS: Sure, she has influence. That’s the whole purpose of endorsements. There will always be some people who factor endorsements into their choices and some who don’t.
There’s nothing unusual about Oprah’s endorsement in that regard. (I never understood Oprah’s appeal though, so maybe I’m not as able to see how she’ll have any more influence than any other celebrity endorsement, e.g., Chuck Norris for Huckabee.)
