How to say goodbye to your therapist
The Times recently asked, “How do you know when you are healthy enough to say goodbye to your therapist? And how should a therapist handle it?” John Kenney has an answer in “Last Session,” another good, funny piece from The New Yorker. It’s actually written as a play, and a good one. Enjoy.

Will I need a therapist if I don’t get my daily dose of ‘Homosexual WMB Thread?

I know I don’t need my therapist when my neck and back don’t hurt anymore.

You don’t say hello to begin with, that’s how.
As a wise man once said, if you don’t start, you don’t have to stop.
Most of that therapy stuff is from the pit of hell anyway.

Just read the piece. It’s funny in a twisted sort of a way. A lot of “therapy” is indeed self perpetuating.

That guy is a lousy therapist, imho. I hope all his patients quit.

3–from the pit of hell
(like living with a fool-adulterer was for me)
you learned this how?

Bianca, you obviously have lived a charmed existance. Obviously you didn’t have an alcoholic mother, a workaholic father, and grandparents who couldn’t do for you or didn’t care enough to do for you, so count your blessings that you have never needed to talk to a therapist (have you ever sought councelling from your pastor?)
I for one have needed it and have benefitted from it. AND I am also taking 150 mg of Wellbutrin right now because I went to the doctor last week and ended up crying and telling her all that was going wrong in my life. Think next time before you speak.

I can’t even see the word “therapist” without thinking of Sean Connery anymore.

Bianca, there are many people who have shared their stories here, of broken lives. You may not agree with therapy, and I might agree with you, but your words are hurtful to those who suffer, it doesn’t solve anything.
I have two friends whom I have been very close with, one since 7th grade, another as a very young adult, their lives are tragic. I wouldn’t want to hurt them further…..I think you get the idea.

Randy Alcorn has some good articles on his website on the counseling matter.

“Last Session” – It IS good and funny. As MiM says … “just read it.”
Thanks HSK.

Quite funny. Though I’m not sure HSK was intending it to start a rant about therapy.

Brava, Kim. Just make sure you learn how to say goodbye to him/her/it

Bianca–
A good therapist actually helps his clients “say goodbye” when the time comes. I know this because I have been to a good therapist and was a good therapist myself.

I wasn’t able to access this piece when I clicked on the link.
I just think it would be instructional to listen to real people who have been helped and be interested in the ways that real people have overcome the trials in their lives.

Kim, you’re stronger than you think and your willingness to go to a therapist proves that. Not everyone has a reliable support system. Sometimes you need someone to talk to who is objective and a family member isn’t always that someone. A therapist can be a great help in that department. Yes, it helps to learn that other people have come through similar circusmtances, but there are things that may need to be said in private to an objective person. If it helps, do it. You’re level-headed. You’ll know when to stop.
