Not everyone has a reliable support system. Sometimes you need someone to talk to who is objective and a family member isn't always that someone. A therapist can be a great help in that department. Yes, it helps to learn that other people have come through similar circusmtances, but there are things that may need to be said in private to an objective person. If it helps, do it. You may not agree with therapy, and I might agree with you, but your words are hurtful to those who suffer, it doesn't solve anything. I have two friends whom I have been very close with, one since 7th grade, another as a very young adult, their lives are tragic. I wouldn't want to hurt them further.....I think you get the idea.
