McCain’s “most valuable asset”
Conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh has made it pretty clear how he feels about John McCain as the Republican Party presidential nominee: He’s not a fan. Nonetheless, Limbaugh thinks he could end up becoming McCain’s “most valuable asset”:
“If I really wanted to torpedo McCain, I would endorse him,” Limbaugh said on his radio show. “Because that would send the independents and liberals who are going to vote for him running away faster than anything.”
“What people don’t realize is that I am doing McCain the biggest favor that can be done for him by staying out of this,” he continued. “If I endorsed him thoroughly and with passion, that would end the independents and moderates, because they so despise me and they so hate me.” …
“Couldn’t it be said, if somebody wanted to…that I am secretly supporting McCain, because I secretly do want him to win, but I know full well that if I come out and endorse him, he’s cooked?” Limbaugh asked. “Who may be in this whole kit and caboodle, this who shebang, the most valuable asset McCain has?”
“Me.”
Does he have a point?

Rush always has a point usually, about how great he is.

Agreed. That’s what I got out of this. He’s desperate for something to talk about until November.

LLama,
Yeah, but he’s right, don’t you hate it!!
I’ll never understand liberals!

Whether Limbaugh is doing this slyly or not, who cares. The point is that the roughly 30% of independent voters who will decide the election will view his scathing remarks as a plus for McCain.
On the Democratic side, I’m hoping that whomever Michael Moore supports gets the nomination.
As to Limbaugh himself, I regard him as a loudmouthed yahoo.

Rush and Peter Leavitt have a point. McCain knows the conservatives have no place to go. They will not vote for Clinton nor Obama. They will vote for him or stay home. OTOH, some “yeller dog” Democrats I know are looking for a “yeller dog” to vote for. McCain is the Democrat’s favorite Republican. They might cross over and give him the election.
Me? I’ve never stayed home since my first vote for Eisenhower. I may make history here.
BTW, I may be the only person here to confess that he likes Rush. Count me as a “mind numbed robot”. Sometimes he goes off the deep end, but generally he’s right on.

Chas,
Mega Dittos. I’ve never quite understood the hatred for Rush… I think he’s bombastic, I think he’s arrogant, I think he’s self-centered. But I also think he’s entertaining, informed, and usually right. And he’s not an old curmugeon like Larry King. He doesn’t come across as a crusty old fart that hates his opponents. Larry King does.
Oh Rush will make fun of his opponents, and insult them, but it’s almost always in a creative way that exposes the absurdity of their position using absurdity.
And I don’t think he’s “desparate for something to talk about til November” either. There’s so much going on there’s always something to talk about.

When I heard Rush say this, I thought, “He’s laying the groundwork to endorse McCain later.”

So Rush is admitting that the conservative vote alone is much smaller than the moderate/liberal vote within the Republican party?

SteveG. I don’s see how you can draw that conclusion from anything anyone, anywhere, has said. If there was a conservative anywhere in sight, we would see.
As Rush says, “Name the top ten moderates in history.”

I’ll start the list:

#3 RRBAR,
Thinking me a liberal is a hoot. The reason I say that Rush is an egomaniac is because I have known him for many years. My sister in law actually worked for him for many years as well. We have enough Rush stories to write a book – a funny one at that.
The rest of his family is great. He was sort of the black sheep who wasn’t going amount to much because he knew everything, when he didn’t. He was always too smart for his britches and couldn’t get motivated to be anything because he was already better than what ever he was going to be. I haven’t seen him for awhile but I’m sure he hasn’t changed.
Yes, he is way more right more than he is wrong today and he found his true calling. The liberals hate him for it. God put Rush on earth for the liberals to hate more than Bush. Put any capital letter before ush and the whack job specialists will hate them too it no doubt.

Well, Rush is saying that losing the votes of moderates and liberals would cost McCain the election. The conservative vote alone would not be enough to win over the Democratic candidate (Rush is saying.)
However, losing the conservative vote is apparently, as Rush tells it, survivable.
Ergo, the moderate/liberal wing of the R party must be significantly larger than the conservative.

Llama,
So was Rush the youngest in the family? Or third in the birth order? He just seems like the baby of the family to me. I don’t know why, but they seem to land on their feet and make good later in life, while the rest of us “responsible” older siblings struggle along…

Make it Man #6. I concur with your assessmt. I dont tune up Rush that much anymore. I still devour my National Review and HUMAN EVENTS when they come in the mail. EL-Rushbo has many imitators and would-be usurpers. I particularly like Michael Medved when he has “Disagreemt Day”. You can’t beat those callers. And I love Laura Ingraham.
Michael Savage or Mark Levin? Not so much

Yeah. I listen to him in the car sometimes, but don’t admit to many people that I like him. He’s irreverent and does not represent a Christian view. And I do feel slightly irritated that he’s right so often. Which is probably most of the reason people hate him. Somebody that arrogant doesn’t deserve to be right!

Janie,

MIM, I believe his brother David is younger than Rush. I also totally agree with your post #6
Chas, my friend, you are not alone. I too admire Mr. Limbaugh and have been a ditto-head since 1990.

Rush doesn’t understand independent voters, and makes the mistake of thinking they are like he is, ideological, but less so.
In recent elections, the most powerful Republican weapon has been accusing the Democratic candidate of flip-flopping. Gore “reinvented” himself and Kerry went wind surfing and voted for some version of a bill before he voted against another version of it. This line of attack is designed to influence independents, not the Republican base, who of course are convinced that the Democrats are rigidly consistent socialists.
McCain’s problem is that he has run so far to the right that he’s actually flip-flopped. It’s not bad enough (yet) to tarnish his image as a straight-talker, but it’s bad enough that he won’t be able to accuse his opponent of inconsistency.
Independents don’t vote against Republicans because they find them too conservative. Regardless of the Republican candidate’s ideology, they vote for Republicans because of their dislike of the personality of the Democrats.
