In recent elections, the most powerful Republican weapon has been accusing the Democratic candidate of flip-flopping. Gore "reinvented" himself and Kerry went wind surfing and voted for some version of a bill before he voted against another version of it. This line of attack is designed to influence independents, not the Republican base, who of course are convinced that the Democrats are rigidly consistent socialists. McCain's problem is that he has run so far to the right that he's actually flip-flopped. It's not bad enough (yet) to tarnish his image as a straight-talker, but it's bad enough that he won't be able to accuse his opponent of inconsistency. Independents don't vote against Republicans because they find them too conservative. Regardless of the Republican candidate's ideology, they vote for Republicans because of their dislike of the personality of the Democrats. We have enough Rush stories to write a book - a funny one at that. The rest of his family is great.
