I don't know that Huckabee is lobbying to become a new figurehead for Christians or conservatives, but we could certainly do a lot worse. He has the humility and humor that has been sorely lacking from the outgoing trendmakers (Robertson, et al.)

The Republican party is in a fix. As the more conservative of the two major parties, they have drifted more toward the left in the past 20 years and have pretty much taken the evangelical right for a ride of promises without actually fulfilling anything.

While the Republicans may not necessarily win with the support of the evangelicals they definitely won't win without it. The Repubs have a lot of fence mending to do. It looks like they may have about 8 years to do it in. :(

I'm a centrist myself, Night Train, but young "evvies" as you call them grow up and have families. We had an environmental movement in the 70s, too. It fizzled. The kids grew up. These things come and go in cycles.

I don't know how you can conclude that with so many people of both Dem and Repub, as well as Indies, who are tired of the waste and high taxes, that this country is turning liberal in the way Obama and Clinton are liberal. I'm not so sure that the change people want is what those two are offering. There's a money revolt coming, and the realization that the government can't keep you from foreclosure and credit card debt, is going to be hard to take. Unless you're looking for a total bailout by the government, some hard lessons are coming.

In his book, Huckabee listed traits common to success in ministry as well as being President. Am I the only person who read his book??
Guess so.

It doesn't matter who becomes the real or self appointed leader of the Christian right. It's a movement which has peaked. Its best days are behind it, and it will have less and less influence with each passing year. That's because of two trends, the second one of which is unstoppable. The first trend is that evvies are simply becoming more liberal, especially the younger ones. Which plays right into and compounds the second trend: the vast majority of thos in the Christian right were/are middle aged/elderly white people. Every year these people make up a smaller and smaller portion of America's population and the electorate, while every year the percentage of young, non-white voters increases.

Do you agree?

Absolutely not. I do not want an Evangelical candidate, I want a candidate with whom I can agree on the issues. Huckabee is not that candidate. The last thing we need is another person appointing himself as our representative.

I will say this for Huckabee: His meetup dotcom folks are quite diverse and highly motivated. They are the equiv of all the young Goldwaterite volunteers who later on showed up as Reagan staff. I dont foresee them rushing gladly to McCain's ranks should Huck call it quits. Many would see it as betrayal.

And for that matter I've not seen any meetup groups for McCain show near as much enthusiasm for sacrificing to advance their beliefs or their man. Most McCain cheerleaders are current office-holders/ big money donors. The rank and file are just anti-Hill, anti-Obama folks

I'm kind of in the same camp. Personally, I am disturbed by his outright pettiness toward Romney while on the trail, essentially attacking the one who could have gotten McCain out of the way. While I appreciate his right to campaign, there is still a time to end it when it looks like he might harm conservatism more with someone like McCain as nominee. But, alas, he seem truly aligned with Mc more than his opponent. Slim pickins' this election, I'm afraid. Anyway, his prolife rhetoric falls a little short when much of his other policies/governing smells of big government indulgence rather that fiscal modesty, etc. Thus the reason why his sweet sounding words feel a bit disingenuous to some evangelicals who felt burned by the pseudo-Christian conservative Bush.

I hope Huckabee wins. If not I hope that both he and Romney will be out speaking at ea and every Rotary or Kiawanis gathering, writing a newspaper column or blogsite and quietly doing the same slow process of network-building, as Reagan did from 1964 to 1980. [Although I hope neither candidate (nor our nation!) has a Jimmy Carter to compel folks to put him in office!]
