Something Light: Top 10 rap songs that white people love
Okay, I heard about this list on the radio this morning.
I can’t link you to the site because the blogger who compiled this list has a potty mouth. Still, he’s right when he writes: “When these songs come on, White People look at each other and say “Awwww yeah”…and are compelled to sing along. Sometimes there’s also a corresponding stupid dance move.”
“Having studied White People for 27 years, this blogger says, “my authority on the topic is absolute.”
Oh, yeah? We’ll see. Raised on rap and R&B in the semi-hood, my dear husband will weigh in on this later, having been a white rap-lover for 41 years. I can tell you right now that there’s at least one classic, classic song missing from the list.
See if you can guess which 10 songs the Absolute Expert says White People love most. (No fair googling until you’ve posted your guesses.)
I’ll post the Expert’s answers this afternoon (as well as my dh’s corrections.) :-)

I don’t have the faintest idea. I don’t think I could list even one rap song.

Eminem is probably on the list. I’d guess Run DMC is too. The Beastie Boys (Fight for your Right to Party). Maybe some old Snoop Dogg. MC Hammer (”Hammer Time”). Sir Mix a Lot’s “Baby Got Back.” I don’t know. There’s a lot of possibilities.

I’m guessing Tone-Loc’s Funky Cold Medina or Wild Thing are on there, if I’m spelling the artist’s handle correctly.
Classic White-People-Love-It elements of these songs:
1. Recorded a long, long time ago.
2. White people can actually understand the loathsome lyrics, and consider themselves hip for their ability to do so.
3. Top 40 airplay.

As a white boy who attended many school dances in his day, I bet I can get a few of the obvious ones.
Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby. That’s gotta be #1.
Beastie Boys – Fight for your Right
MC Hammer – Can’t touch this
Eminem – Lose yourself
Ton Loc – Funky Cold Medina (or Wild Thing)
House of Pain – Jump Around
Young MC – Bust a Move
Sir Mix-a-lot – Baby Got Back
Sugar Hill Gang – Rapper’s Delight
Will Smith – Gettin’ Jiggy with it
Hot Steppa – Ini Kamoze

DC Lawyer’s list is good.
Sir Mix A Lot
MC Hammer
Snoop Dogg
Vanilla Ice
Beastie Boys
Eminem
Run DMC
Tone Loc
I’ll add:
Will Smith (definitely)
Queen Latifa (maybe)
Naughty by Nature (maybe)
Is Shaggy rap? He might be on the list.

RR’s “elements” list is dead on. Brilliant.
Here’s my shot:
Sir Mix a Lot’s “Baby Got Back”
MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This”
Tone Loc’s “Wild Thing”
Beastie Boys “Fight For Your Right”
Snoop Dog’s “Gin and Juice”
Dre’s “Ain’t Nothin but a G Thang”
Will Smith’s “Gettin Jiggy With It”
Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”
50 Cent’s “Da Club”
Nelly’s “Hot in Here”

Here’s my take:
1. Young MC’s “Busta Move”
2. Run DMC “Walk This Way” (with AC/DC)
3. Tone Loc “Funky Cold Medina”
4. Digital Underground “Humpty Dance”
5. Rob Base “It Takes Two”
6. House of Pain “Jump Around”
7. Sir-Mix-A-Lot “Baby Got Back”
8. Tag Team “Whoomp There it is”
9. Public Enemy “Bring the Noise”
10. LL Cool J “Goin’ Back to Cali”
The key to the list is that it can’t contain white rappers like Beastie Boys and Vanilla Ice – they aren’t hip. No white person will bust out dancing and singing to Vanilla Ice – at least not in public. Also key is age (like a fine wine). Nothing too new. Has to be old school.
While it may not be 100% correct, I am pretty confident because my college roommate was into rap. I picked it up via osmosis.

Sorry about that.

What is this world coming to when Vanilla Ice can’t be included?? These are raps songs WHITE people love. I went to a wedding month or so ago and when “Ice Ice Baby” came on people – white and black – were actually running to the dance floor. Hysterical.

Destined to Win, by End Times Warriors (ETW) a christian rap band who actually recorded this tune as a cover from DeGarmo & Key.
For those who want a rap song with edifying lyrics……this is for you.
I actually found a copy on eBay.

I’ve listened to little rap, and most of what I have heard I didn’t like. But there is one song I liked: “White and Nerdy” by “Wierd Al” Yankovic. Sometimes I watch the accompanying music video just for amusement.

#10 – “Walk this Way” is with Aerosmith, not AC/DC.
Lazy Sunday – “Chronicles of Narnia” – SNL rap

The Chronic – Dr. Dre/Snoop
Subterranean Homesick Blues – Bob Dylan

I’m calling B.S. on your husband being a rap fan for 41 years. What rap was being rapped 41 years ago? 1967? Are you kidding me?
Report comment to moderator
Ah the memories. I won’t repeat them, but I’ll add the ones I remember that haven’t been mentioned:
Frankie Smith – Double Dutch Bus
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five – New York New York – This was the first rap I ever heard.
DJ Magic Mike – Drop Da Bass – It’s generally remixed rather than rapped to, but This was always the test of a good automobile speaker system and guaranteed to loosen the screws in your ride so it rattled after the first playing.
