It's not enough to give to a charity or perform a good deed, even anonymously. You've got to do it for the "right" reasons. Of course, once you think you're doing it for the "right" reasons, Merton and his ilk will tell you that you're nothing but a whited sepulcher filled with vile, spiritual pride.
