Trap door to grace
Trap doors. The universe is full of them. C.S.Lewis understood that when he wrote a little children’s story about a simple, homely wardrobe in an abandoned upstairs room that became the entryway to another world. This was no mere literary device on his part, to get Lucy from
Ted Bundy, hours before they executed him in
There are the notorious ones — internet porn, the bottle, the slots casino, astrology. But there are unlikely ones too — prescription pain medicine, the mall, love of horses, a love of art collecting. Makes no difference to Satan. “Soft underfoot” is as good as suicide.
I have known of men who fell through trap doors never to be heard of again. But by God’s grace, I have known of men who fell through trap doors, and after getting beat up by Satan for years, were graciously rescued by God.
God provided other trap doors, so that they stumbled into grace unawares. Some of those grace doors were unlikely too. Like prison. Which Satan no doubt meant as a trap for his kingdom, but which God co-opted for his own kingdom. Praise His unsearchable wisdom and mercy!

In my recovery group, many thank God for their addiction. Not that the addiction is good but it forced them to come to realize their own powerlessness and lean wholly on God’s grace.

Not to diagnose each and every situation, but in general, it is our widely accepted spiritual adulteries that have led to these sexual/addiction traps. The infertile soil, (sower and the seed) “religious” environments full of human traditions rather than godly love and true religion. Tithing to pay for the building rather than to feed the poor within the doors and community.

And in recovery groups you have people who are speaking each other’s language, able to communicate, therefore, and able to gain strength from each other. There are no fees for this, if I am correct, and no building to pay for, much less a “priest” to maintain. They all function a priestly way.

I spend so much time at work on the PC, I rarely even use my PC.
Here are some Scriptures that I have committed to memory.
Job 31:1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?
Pro 4:23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.
A wise minister once told me that sex is much like the soil of the earth. Given love, attention and nourishment, it brings forth life. But, if you track it upon the carpet of your life, it is just so much filth and dirt.
I also encourage every man to apply Proverbs 5.

4. Joe B, another verse that always comes to mind when discussing subjects like this is Psalm 101:3
“I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.”
I’ve had handful of close friends who either do, or have struggled with addictions to things like pornography, among others. It was always very painful to watch them fall into sin, struggle to get out of it, attain a brief respite, only to fall into it again, and harder than before.
More recently, one of those friends has made incredible strides in the right direction, and while I know he still struggles, it’s amazing to see the redemptive work of Christ in his life, and to know that God doesn’t “give up,” even when many others do.
We all have our own pet sins, and chinks in our armor. We all have our strongholds, too. Much like the other post in “Guard Your Heart,” staying out of pitfalls and “trap doors” is a proactive and often difficult discipline.

But as a practical matter, most of the recovery groups I’ve heard of need a place to meet, and it seems like most often, they choose a church hall for that purpose.
I think it’s a great thing that churches do make their halls available for this, but the building has to be there, and someone has to pay for it.

Great point, Thomas.
Reg – Our tithe is only supposed to be the beginning of our giving. Our church is very small, but somehow we are able to support the building (paid off years ago) & our pastor (at a pretty low salary), but also give generously to missions & various community needs.
And, no, we’re not all well-off financially. Most of us probably fall in the blue-collar/middle class category. But God works through willing hearts to provide for them & let them still be able to give.

Oh, brother…
Anything that gets in the way of a person sitting around and doing nothing but repeating “Jesus” over and over and over is idolatry, a Satanic trap door. Loving horses and/or enjoying fine art is just as bad as being addicted to internet porn because while you’re enjoying your artwork and your animals you’re not sitting around saying “Jesus” over and over and over, which is the chief end of man.

Somewhat confused why people who in economic matters refusing to view socio-economic background as an excuse for economic behavior yet accept “traps” in moral matters. Be responsible for you actions — its not the porno mag which caused Bundy to act, Bundy committed these acts not the magazines. Thousands of boys and man view porn only a few make terrible choices. And thats’ what it is a choice.

HRW,
Folks who are in recovery circles do come to the place where they face responsibility for their actions – at least, if we want to recover we do. However, that doesn’t change the fact that when we first started out, porn or alcohol or drugs really seemed and felt like a great and attractive idea. For me, acting out felt wonderful and it temporarily took away my pain. Once into it, I saw how much it took over and controlled me and left me feeling empty.
So, sure, it’s a choice. But it is also a trap.

Night Train,
First, I apologize if I am mis-understanding you. Are you offended by the young woman who poured out an alabaster jar of perfume over Jesus’ feet rather than selling it to use the proceeds for the poor? The same Lord who commended this act also criticized the Pharisees for making the Sabbath a “God”. My take on the writer’s intent is that even good actions can become idolatrous. As I look back over the years, I see that most of us want our brothers and sisters to confirm to our image of Christ rather than to Christ himself. Our image is more likely to be fashioned after our bent. Christ is way too big to be constrained to that. After awhile, Jesus probably would have told Mary to get up and help her sister. This is the same Lord who told Martha to take a break to gain a better perspective on the chief aim of man.

Meetings do not have to be held in church buildings.
