I took JJF's post as alluding to abortion and the way we are told it is a personal decision made after much agonizing and if we care about these little blobs of tissue we don't care about children after they are born. As in abortion, the government is there for them to help them kill their babies as efficiently as possible. I thought it was very good.

I remember a reference (was it here on WMB?) to what happens to women in India. It was a a pictorial essay about one brother marrying and the wife having to take care of and service the other brother or brothers in the house. Many men couldn't get a wife.

Whether you kill your baby girl or not is a very difficult personal decision that an agonizing father must make. Since you're not in his shoes, you have no right to judge him. If anything, the government should come along side this struggling father and provide safe, clean, private, and effective ways for him to kill his baby girl.

And anyway, why don't you keep your nose out of it and go worry about the girls that aren't killed by their fathers?

It's not an education issue is it? Isnt denigration of women derived from their religion and the culture it gave rise to?
And perhaps if the USA made Indian adoptions even easier then we'd see more Indian gals born.
And again I ask if this is true for all Indians? Some provinces moreso than others? Equally among Indian Christians, muslims and Hindus??

They've known about this problem for many years but have not educated too many. Educate for sure, but in the meantime, provide the incentive. Yes, it's a sad way of valuing a child, but at least the child is alive. This reminds me of the recently sold letters of Lincoln wherein he suggested purchasing slaves' freedom.

If they don't know the sex of the child, they won't abort it. They have to stop the people who have those sonogram machines who go from village to village. Outlaw the whole process and clamp down on the offenders. Of course, this won't help the girl babies who are killed after birth just because they are boys, but combined with the "education," it might help some.

Considering the recent thread on sex selection of babies taking place in this country, our own country needs to do some educating, too.
