Happy (early) St. Patrick’s Day
I live in Savannah, Georgia, home to America’s 2nd-largest (behind New York City) and oldest (184 years) St. Patrick’s Day Parade in America. Because the real St. Paddy’s happens this Monday, during Holy Week, Savannahians are celebrating it today. Since I work in downtown Savannah, this means I don’t have to go to work today. It’d be impossible to drive to work through all that beer without drinking some of it. We’re not celebrating, though. We’re going to the nearest zoo, two hours down the coast, so my daughter can see non-Irish tigers wearing buttons that say “Kiss me, I’m hungry and in captivity.” So, here’s a Friday question. If you had today off, like me, what would you do with it?

I’d go to the St. Paddy’s day parade, sip on some bloody mary’s until lunch time, and then wash down some bangers ‘n’ mash with a couple pints o Guinness.

We went once, when we lived in Hinesville–they even closed school there because enough teachers and students skipped on previous years.
Assuming you aren’t going to the parade, is the Wesley Walk in bloom?

If I lived in Savannah and didn’t want to drown in the St. Patricks Day beer flooding the streets, I’d go down to JAX to the zoo, and while I was there I’d visit my new friend Metanoia who lives in JAX.
My wife and I happened to be in the process of considering a move to JAX last year at this time and took a trip up to Savannah and had no clue about the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. We were totally caught off guard . . . and she’s Irish to boot!

Put me down for thepParade. I used to celebrate St. Patrick’s by cooking Corned Beef and cabbage, but my husband doens’t like it, so now I just wear green.

Consider the possibility that the tigers, wearing orange, are Irish Protestants. Make an effigy of Gerry Adams out of Spam, and throw it to them.

I would spend it with my wife and daughter doing what ever they want.

I would get a leg up on all of my Saturday chores (cleaning, shopping, cooking for the big weekly dinner and some laundry) so tomorrow would be less stressful; am also having a lunch guest this week, so even more to plan for.

I would not go to the parade. I think I would go out for lunch and try corned beef and cabbage. Most likely I would go to a nearby state park, take one of the trails, then sit in the sunshine (while it lasts) and read.

I was in NYC for the St Pat’s parade. I couldnt get over all the cops on parade. Made me wonder who was left to fight crime and enforce the law!

Sawgunner/#11,
You know your army installations! No, TJ and I taught in Hinesville for several years–we did have mostly Army dependents since it was the local high school just off post.

We had corned beef and cabbage for dinner tonight. Just by accident. We Krouts don’t celebrate St. Patricks day. However, my wife was (still is, kinda) a Collins. Not sure whether that’s Irish or Scottish. My mother was a Steadman. That may be Irish, but I don’t know.
Lester: South Carolina lost it’s game to Tennessee. I hope the Boilermakers can do something in the Big -10.

“I work in downtown Savannah”
You lucky stiff. I’m sure lunching on a park bench under the Spanish Moss is a real burden. We honeymooned there.
