Meditation 3.15
On Saturdays, we consider a passage of Scripture …
You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.

Especially since having children, I find this passage of Scripture both humbling and encouraging: humbling, because I know I don’t read and meditate on God’s Word enough; encouraging because the unchangeable, ever-faithful Lord is the one who has promised blessing.
I also am grateful for extended family, church family, and a good Christian school that help us keep this command to teach our children in the way of God.

As a father of five (ages 14-25), I wish I had done better at this. Much better. Sigh (Maybe I can start improving today.)

Amazingly, I have learned that when I am regularly in the word, the Word flows out in day to day activities with the kids and others. And when I am not, it doesn’t. Why is it I don’t do what I want to do?

Mark Roth, I’m not sure any parent doesn’t wish they had done better on something. As a grandmother I am so much more aware of how little time we really have to instill the truth in our children.
I agree with Mumsee, that this flows naturally when we are regularly in the Word and letting the Holy Spirit lead us. Opportunities abound in everyday life. It is a big mistake to think that having a daily devotion with our families is enough. This is sharing your own spiritual struggle, growth and knowledge with your children. It is living the truth before them and expressing that truth all through the day.
I am also grateful for the friends, family, church and parachurch organizations that help parents to accomplish this. I am grateful too, for those rituals that help our very young children grasp the importance of certain things. I think of the annual Christmas programs etc.

The passage is so very clear. Why or why do we fail to follow its dictates. I am convinced that America’s problems are the consequences of each generation failing to teach the next.

I’m convicted. I did do this, homeschooling, but I could do it more.
