Well, Harrison, if your critics and scoffers charge you with not believing in science, but rather in magic, and you don't have a wand handy, you might be in trouble. But given the limited worldviews and intellects of the critics around here, I'm not worried.

One thing I know about the future: whatever we specifically predict about it, based on our own limited imaginations, will usually be wrong. Forty or fifty years ago, people boasted about flying cars, easy space flight, etc. And yet, our major tech developments are small, powerful computers, cell phones, digital cameras, iPods, and the like.
Who's to say that invisible forcefields for lightsabers isn't lying ahead in another fifty years? :)

I'm holding out for a low cost easily made at home, time traveling, personal teleportation device that allows one to become immortal as any person, any time or any place they want - even in their own personal parallel universe that is identical to the one we live in except you are not here.

Whatever gets invented, I'm sure the Chinese will buy or steal the idea and produce it cheaper.

Article is interesting -- just stay away from the comments, will make your brain hurt (red herrings, ignorance, etc)... ;) (course as much could be said of my own comments...)

Several years ago in my former life as a mechanic, a friend of mine and were having lunch out by the river, and talking about future inventions. One of the things we thought might be possible were noise cancelling headphones. In a matter of months it was a reality... There was another thing we thought of, but I don't remember it at this point. It also became possible within a few years too.

I saw recently where mind reading, which is soooo science fiction-ey, just might be possible in the future too.

I've thought many times that if we knew how to manipulate matter well enough, that we could figure out how to create computer generated walls that turn off and on... You could even build a house with it.... sounds like a force field with pigment to me...

Cool stuff...
