“D” vs. “R”
As a North Carolinian, it’s good to have the presidential candidates finally paying attention to our state … at least the Democrats. Yesterday, Barack Obama was here in Greensboro, and right now Hillary Clinton is speaking in the Cap City, Raleigh. As I was heading into the kitchen to make my lunch, I turned on the TV and heard Hillary tell a joke—in a way only Hillary can, with her usual … measured … cadence: “If you want to move forward, you put the car in ‘D.’ If you want to go backward, you put it in ‘R.’” Hmmm … what other words could the letters “D” and “R” represent to describe the two political parties? … And keep it clean!

Yeah, Obama is setting up a campaign center here in Catawba County (NC)… …he will supposedly be visiting this area sometime in April.

In keeping with the Biblical declaration in Ecclesiastes 10:2:
“The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.”
D: deranged, deficient in wisdom
R: right minded, rich in wisdom

Booooo!
None of yours have a hook like hers. You can’t just come up with bad D words and good R words. You have to connect it, like through the car analogy.

When you’re up against a brick wall, you have to opt for R — insisting on D will get you nowhere.
When you’re at the edge of a river or a cliff, putting it in D is reckless and suicidal.
When you’re in the garage and it’s time to put your vehicle to its intended use, R is your only sensible option.
Are those better, Luke?

So let me get this straight. You are in Iraq, sitting in a Hummer, Al Qaeda in the sights, Congress has two cheering sections, and which gear is Hillary recommending?

I think Peter L (#3) has given the best descriptions so far.

Size of government: Ridiculous, or Disastrous?
The analogy is flawed. “D” brings the vehicle the same direction as “R,” but it does so ~20 years sooner.

I agree with Peter L and VS and also with Publius except for the opposite reason. The Government is so big that it really cannot be controlled. Our only hope is that it can be slowed down. McCain maybe could get it into D1 rather than Overdrive. It is a long uphill ride and if we do it too fast we will launch it into oblivion at the top. The ultimate hope would be Park!

Whoops! I reread Publius and agree fully. Sorry.

To get from ‘D’ to ‘R’ or ‘R’ to ‘D’ you have to go through neutral.
McCain?
