For morals or money?
In what seems to be the latest Hollywood fad, a growing number of young stars are proclaiming their commitment to remain abstinent until marriage. Included are Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, and even Victoria Secret model Adriana Lima. (I raised my eyebrows at that last one, too.) Some can’t help but wonder, though, whether celebrity pledges of purity are less about their morals and more about the money:
“[Stars who pledge their virginity] help win over parents who see their kids getting bombarded with sexual imagery and lyrics,” [said Joey Bartolomeo, a senior writer at celebrity magazine US Weekly.] “Virginity certainly helps them get a bigger following.”
Branding a young star is a key challenge for any publicist to the stars, and pure and innocent is often the best place to start, PR guru Lizzie Grubman said.
“Purity is always best,” said Grubman, who added that she has no doubt managers and publicists are encouraging these young stars to proclaim their abstinence publicly. “To have a good girl or a good guy always works, and it’s very, very rare that anyone comes out and talks about their lack of virginity.”

Hollywood never wants to admit the harm their influence can cause but they are always ready to take credit when there is any sign of good influence. They can’t have it both ways. Of course it is all about the money. Also look for other celebrities to start to make fun of them.

The best thing you can teach your kids is that no one in Hollywood cares about you, no one on Madison Ave. cares about you. They DO NOT have your best interests at heart. They want your money.

Virginity and immodesty – strange bedfellows…

And we can make that judgement?

On the one hand, good for them for doing their part to make purity fashionable.
On the other, morality without godliness is a whitewashed tomb.

“Pride comes befor a downfall.”
Don’t tell my your are going to do it, just do it. It would be like Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward saying on their wedding day, “We’re not going to get divorced like everyone else in Hollywood.” That comes off badly, but now that they haven’t gotten divorced like everyone in Hollwood it has garnered them respect.
Integrity is not something you boast about; it is something you walk around in.

Talking about it and doing it are indeed different. But for those who actually intend to follow through, I think it’s great that they are talking about it.
Sure, it’s just as admirable to remain celibate without announcing it to the world, but in a sex-crazed society it is good to know that even some of the rich and famous are taking a stand.
I’m glad to know about this, and I hope we hear about more cases like these.

If only the Brady Bunch men had taken a vow of abstinence 35 years ago. My college GPA would have been much higher if I wasn’t always trying to make it with groovy chicks, like Greg.

Kristin, some wonder whether shameless bunk promoters Mickey Mclean and Harrison Scott Key are doing it for ‘morals or money’.
Glass, house, stone, etc.
You guys know all about it.

I know for several years the basketball greats David Robinson and A.C. ??? (Sorry, can’t recollect the other man’s name) were a sharp contrast to men like Magic Johnson or Kobe Bryant.
The athletes dont get the publicity they merit for advocating chastity until covenant marriage.
I was also impressed by the clear-cut Christian witness given by the model Cathy Ireland. Someone has to make a witness to those who work in such a superficial industry where young people are used and then cast aside.

One the one hand, one doesn’t want to be naive, but on the other hand, what happened to thinking the best of everyone in love? I guess that doesn’t make news or good blog posts. ^_^

Sawgunner – that would be A.C. Green of the Lakers, who was an ordained minister.

Britany Spears!
That one didn’t work out so well did it. I remember when she made that claim–At the time, I was in college with people who went to high school with her. “Umm, not exactly true” was their response.

Pledging virginity until marriage only makes good sense if the marriage is a lifetime commitment, and not a revolving door.

But you can use Brittany Spears as a prime example of what goes wrong when you don’t look our for yourself and make wise decisions. I’m happy to see that since her father took over, she’s been doing better.

Miley Cyrus & the Jonas Brothers are from strong Christian families, from what I’ve heard. Perhaps their “boasting” is in fact a way to take a stand & encourage others to do the same?

I would be happy to see more entertainers taking this tact. The only problem I would have is with those who are faking it (which one sees rather widespread reports of as to Ms. Spears).
Done with an eye toward profit? Again, as long as it is not a fraud, I’ll see it as progress (however minimal it might be).
