Went away- didn’t find peace and quiet. Came home-still no peace and quiet. Went away again-even less peace and quiet. Gave up, came home. Will find peace and quiet even if I have to lock the doors and turn off the phones.
Hi, all, I’m back from my two trips. I am determined not to leave again until the middle of May.

Going away wouldn’t help me find peace and quiet. I can’t find a babysitter and always have to take my distraction with me.

Samuel, you’ve won yourself a virtual cappuccino.

The topic of the retreat where I’m speaking tomorrow? The Rest of God.
I’d say join us, but we’re full.

Mrs. Wesley, who had many children, used to throw her apron over her head as she sat in her rocking chair and prayed. The children knew not to disturb her when that apron was covering her. I really can’t see many modern children obeying that injunction, though!

For some reason, I always feel like I need a week to recover after going on vacation…

Bibliophile,
So do I. I think it’s cause I get out of my groove.
KI,
I taught my children how to have “quiet time.” It worked pretty well. The kids could read books or play something alone and queitly, but no one talked to each other. We would do this for an hour a day. It kept me up on my Bible study (not to mention my sanity) when I had four under five. Once they got the concept they entertained themsleves pretty easily. Now that they are older and it is not a regularly scheduled part of our day some of the kids will be doing homework or get home from work and announce, “I’m having quiet time.”

Adios, you sound like a very wise mom.

Woke up this morning to the beautiful sounds of springtime songbirds filling the air with their joyful noise, and the soft whisper of snowflakes hitting the window. Crocuses are covered again but should be peeking out soon.
Welcome back Ajisuun, how was Senegal and where else did you go?
Trying to instill the idea of quiet time in these three. Having some challenge with eleven year old who cannot conceive of a world that does not want to hear her voice all waking hours and half the sleeping ones. Even when reading a book (her absolute worst case scenario) she chatters non stop about her reading. But she is trying and making progress.

KI,
Ha! Or a desperate one.

Ajisuun,
I sourced from the USA and built a building in The Gambia many years ago (almost 30) that was paid for by UDAID. We took river water and purified it so the people there wouldn’t get typhoid and cholera. It was fairly primitive back then but the people wee just great. Malaria was the big problem.
For those that don’t know, The Gambia is nearly completely surrounded by Senegal.

lol, so true Adios.

I did the same thing with my kids with the quiet time every day once they were past the age of napping. I knew they needed it even if they didn’t realize it but I needed it just as well!
I do it with my grandchildren now too and I think they actually look forward to it. And as a grandmother, I need it more than ever.

Llama,
Where did you build? Is it still there or has it succumbed to WAWA? (West Africa Wins Again) The people here are very friendly and helpful. Malaria is still a huge problem with chloroquine-resistant malaria increasing every year. We are in the middle of the dry season when we shouldn’t be seeing much malaria, but the clinic is still getting seizing kids.
Mumsee,
Dakar was nice and cool (the conference center is right by the ocean). We had some “fun” with the Senegalese police on the way there (many Senegalese hate Gambians and all my companions were Gambians), but God led us to a man who helped us resolve the situation. When I get a chance, I will put the whole story on my blog. I got home and then a few days later, crossed the ferry to Banjul. I was picking up a co-worker who was returning from furlough (yeah, reinforcements! Now we are four, not three.) I also had to deal with my “son’s” problem at school. I will put that story on the blog, too. This has been an interesting few weeks!

Ajisuun,
I don’t know if it still there or not. I haven’t breen there in 30 years. I figure the jungle eventually overgrows everything next to the river but good drinking water was such a problem, I would guess that they at least kept the plant working until something broke. They didn’t have any money to fix anything and you are right that WAWA is a way of life.

I just learned why those so-called “healthy” frozen dinners are so healthy.
There’s nothing good in them.
There’s not enough of it.
So, you finish off dinner with oatmeal cookies, which defeats the purpose of the “healthy meal”.

Chas – Next time skip the meal & have more oatmeal cookies. Oatmeal is good for you.

Once again, we were bueracratically (is that a word?) mislead. The new kids are not two and four, they are one and three. I just got older. In our experience, they do this. I suspect people don’t want a troubled person walking around but a carried one is okay. So they exaggerate the ages until you are snagged. We would have taken them anyway, the kids are excited and so are we.

Mumsee,
My 16-year-old pointed out to me this evening (when we were discussing how long until he is an “adult”) that he really has been alive for almost 17 years, counting the time in the womb.
So maybe they were just using an alternative method of calculating age.

Pauline,
Well, that clarifies things. So do we go buy diapers or figure…oh, never mind… Got to go buy diapers.

My husband says that those healthy dinners aren’t bad if you add enough butter and salt to them

KBells, a couple of more sausage links improves it too.

We have two children ages nearly 3 and nearly 1 who may be joining our family from Tajikistan. Their mother was murdered by her husband so the children are with their grandmother who does not want them. She will release them to their aunt who is our “foster daughter” who is in the US on a student visa. She is married and has a 2 year old and a 1 month old.
Please keep this situation in your prayers. Getting visas and passports for these kids is going to be tricky.
Chas, Brownies made with Fat-free yogurt is a great way to complete a “healthy” TV dinner, as well. Especially if you add some ice cream and raspberries.
