Paul considered schism to be one of the worst things that could happen to a church, besides apostasy. But I can see how someone might interpret 3:17 in a personal sense; because Paul is talking about each individual building upon his foundation, which is Christ. I recall my dad sometimes saying of an excessively complicated but monumentally dumb undertaking: "that was so dumb that it must have required a boatload of Ivy Leaguers to come up with it."
