Here it is, Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off about the week past. Remember the rules:
1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re pleased about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.
2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re ticked about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.
3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.
Have fun!

Rant: Ahhnold is trying to gut the CA education budget.
Rave: Anybody who is anybody in San Diego County is protesting this evening. No better way to start a great weekend in a free country than with a protest rally;)
Hey, are Anlir and Night train really back? That’s fantastic if it’s true!

Adios – Saw Night Train a few days ago on the Penny Pinching thread. Anlir was on yesterday on the Forgiving Public Figures thread and on the Best Place Ever Thread.
I hope they’re back to stay.

Rave: fun day for all the little leaguers tomorrow. There will be a parade with all the kids in uniform and inflatables.
Rant: Hubbie can’t come. He’s going be in Knoxville.
I think I even saw a post from Outcast a few days ago.

Rant: There was an earthquake in Illinois. I suspect TJ & Cameron felt it. Rave: No reports of injuries that I’ve heard.
Big Rave We went down to Rutherfordtown last night to hear the Chuck Wagon Gang. A group called In His Glory opened the show and they were very good. But the evening was about the CWG. Mostly old folks attended, but I’m sure the young crowd would have enjoyed it too. It wasn’t highly advertised.
I don’t know how to link, but do yourselves a favor and go to
http://www.youtube.com
search on Chuck Wagon Gang.
When it comes up, select “Looking for A City”. That is the group that sang last night. They got a standing ovation then too.
Youtube also has another selection, “At Sundown”, you will enjoy that too, but the ladies are different.

Rave:
I’ll see Udo Middlemann this evening. Looking forward to hearing him, and possibly getting to speak with him.
Rave:
The weather has been fabulous even if a bit on the crisp side. And my allergies haven’t been bothering me. I suppose when it warms up a little more, I may have some trouble…
Rant:
The weather is warmer, and the weeds are growing. I’ve not missed all the yardwork.

Animals do act differently just before–the birds had stopped singing and our adult cat was slightly agitated just before and after.

RAVE – The Together for the Gospel Conference that concluded yesterday in Louisville. A spiritual feast.
Rave – meeting and sharing with fellow WORLDMAGBlogger TJ.
CHAS it was without his lady.
RAVE – TJ and Cameron are OK, see #15
Rant – Having a week’s worth of work to finish on a FRIDAY!

Rant: That earthquake that woke me up at 5:34 am.
Rave: No damage in the area; I haven’t even heard of injuries that were closer to the epicenter.
Rant: Folks on world who use misleading names to describe themselves. For instance, I was able to meet Ivan the Terrible this past Tuesday, and he wasn’t terrible at all!
Rave: Being able to meet fellow bloggers two weeks in a row now (Chas last week, Ivan this week). If anybody plans on coming to Louisville next week, let me know!

Rant: The county’s entire 911 system, non-emergency phone system, radio system, and our CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) systems all went down at the same time yesterday, and took nearly two hours to get back online.
Rave: It’s the weekend, and I don’t have to go back to work until Monday. (Yay!)

TJ- How about Ivan the Cuddly, or Ivan the Incredibly Average, or…?
Report comment to moderator
I’d settle for just “Ivan the Not-so-Terrible.”

Ah, one more RAVE: Two free tickets to go see Expelled this evening!
Additional RAVE: I also received a free pass to the Together for the Gospel conference. And, as my friend Ivan knows, we received so many free books that my reading is now tied up for the next 12 months.
RANT: Mark Roth, I think when I wrote those tax checks on Monday, I was making up the difference for your refunds. This year was a real “ouch” year.

Cheryl and TJ; At least once a week we have our windows rattle and feel the house shake. We know it is one of the mines blasting for rock to turn into taconite, which then will be made into steel. Our friends back from AZ, who live much closer to a mine than we do, noticed several new cracks in the walls of their home.

KI, Cameron and I worked at a school last year that was down the street from a quarry. Almost every day, at about 12:30, there was a short blast that would shake the building. The quake last night was much longer (the news estimated it at 10-15 sec, but it did not feel that long) and a bit more jarring.

Rave- Spring is on the horizon in Southwestern Montana. The tulips we planted last fall are up about 2 inches. DW found a crocus but I couldn’t see it.
Rave- Went golfing last Saturday and improved 16 strokes from front 9 to back 9. Hope to go again tomorrow! Will be good to be on the “browns”.
Rant- Misleading term “Allowed amount” referring to insurance coverage.

Adios – A few months ago, when the CA budget problems were just beginning to come to light, I read that the word in the state legislature was that the first cuts would be in education and services to the elderly. The logic being that those 2 were the ones that would raise the largest kerfuffle and, therefore, it would be easier to raise taxes to avoid/recind those cuts. True? I don’t know, but it sounds like what our legislature would do.
I’ve lived in CA for more than 40 years and watched more and more money being thrown at the failing schools, but less and less of it landing in the classroom. A fellow [didn't get his name] being interviewed on Rodger Hitchcocks program the other day said that 46% of the money spent on schools was spent outside the classroom. Yet the cuts being announced are inside the classroom. Why is that? Why cut teachers, but not the ever-growing bureaucracy?

shouldn’t it be a rant that you don’t have any rants? it seems like a sort of letdown…

Ivan the Ok, you missed the best part of the family.
Cheryl, TJ, give us an honest review of “Expelled”. I doubt that Anlir will help us in this. I may see it if it lives up to the advertising.
TomBob, it’s a rave that you don’t have rants.

Tombob,
reminds me of the response to the greeting; “How ya doing?”
“Can’t complain, darn it!”

Rave: I just got to “chat” with my niece on-line. May not seem like much to you all, but when your family is far away, even a typed “chat” is exciting. She is already making plans for when I go back the the U.S. next year.
Rave: Even my 80 something year old father figured out how to “chat” this week.

Ajisuun,
When Mom was alive, one of my brothers went to visit her once, taking his laptop. I got an e-mail from my brother and read it. Then I got another e-mail with his return address, and started reading it. It started, “I bet you never thought you’d get an e-mail from me,” so I looked at the bottom, and it was signed, “Mom.”
I talked to her by phone a day or two later and heard the rest of the story. It seems my brother said, “Let’s send Cheryl an e-mail from you” and started typing stuff up–HE was writing the note. She approved most of what he said, but when he wrote, “[My brother's name] leaves tomorrow, and I’ll sit around and cry for days,” she made him take it out.
It would have been a sure give-away that the note wasn’t from her, as she wasn’t sentimental. But that e-mail they sent “together” is my only one from Mom, and it was fun–especially once I knew the real story.
Report comment to moderator
P.S. I take that back. Mom was sentimental–after she died we found out that she’d kept every card and letter everyone had ever sent her, and we found poetry and other stuff she’d written that said the same thing. She just never let anyone SEE her being sentimental.

I just discovered that I’m going to have a great-granddaughter. Becky is going to name her “Addison”. I told Elvera that if she was going to name her for a Metro stop, she could have chosen one in Virginia. Ballston would be just as good. But all of her children will have fad names.
Becky is the one who declared me a “dork”. She would know.
Addison (Addie?) will, doubtless, be the prettiest and smartest girl in all of North Carolina. Uhhhh Make that all of the US of A.

Rave: My company paid for it!
Rave: Long weekend for me, since my hours at work were cut!
Rant: Waiting to find out what will happen with my job – I’m not the most patient person in the world. I still have a job, but the direction of the company is in question.
Rave: I think spring is finally here!
Rant: The weekend seems to be coming in cooler and wetter than they first predicted. Oh, well! Better than snow!

Congrats, JBH. I used to coach a high school Academic Team/Quiz Bowl Team (and Cameron assisted). We did win a few local competitions and finished second in our region a couple of times, but no way did we even sniff 4th in state!

Kayvee,
Not sure about the Kerfuffle;) Love that word! And also not sure why anyone would listen to Roger Hedgecock’s show. You do know his history as San Diego’s mayor, eh?
One of the reasons public school is so broken is that it is run by lawmakers hundreds of miles away. If they earmark $$$ for textbooks it has to be spent on textbooks even though what a school may need is desks or computers. Our district had a bond passed recently so we can build a new high school to aliviate the over-crowded one, but now we have to lay off teachers, but can’t touch the $$$ voters voted on for new construction. So we can build the new school, but they will still squeeze too many kids in one room now that there is not enought to pay teachers. If we recieved the same amount from the state as last year we’d be fine, but every district is losing millions. Our district will lose 4.5 million after losing 2.1 million, so it is hard to see how anyone watched more and more being thrown at a failed system the last few years.
But the real problem is the suspension of Prop 98. It may all be kerfuffle, but the voters passed that proposition so this kind of thing could not happen. The voters of the Golden State need to make their voices heard. Poor Ahnold. He’s lost any political cachet he had over this one.
