I know this isn’t the answer to the quote, but Chuck Swindol had a great sermon on that thought that I heard on the radio a few years ago.

Kim, I hear you! It will get better. When there’s no place to go but up, that’s where things go. Didn’t you once sell real estate? Do you still have your license and contacts with a broker? Call one, if you liked that job, and ask them if you could do part-time work or if they will let you know when the market picks up again. Ya never know.

Chas,
To answer your questions from yesterday. The price of oil is directly tied to the value of the dollar since it is priced in oil worldwide.
China will find that once liberty and freedom get out of the bottle it is impossible to keep the rest of them in – just like Russia found out. It took 75 years for the Russians to through off Communism, an extreme form of Socialism, but it will probably take the Chinese much more time than that. The Chinese tend to be docile and their government has never had any problem killing their own in great numbers and will do so to ward of losing power.
But the Chinese will one day have a representative government based on democratic principles. Not like ours but unique to them.

OK, this is so funny, and stupid, I just have to share it. My wife’s employer has a friends and family sale at their outlets every year. In prior years, they handed out business size cards that would get you big discounts. But this year, in order to be “greener”, they’ve decide to do it by sending e-mails to the employees to print themselves, so as not to kill all those poor trees. Now you can get about 20 of the business size cards from one sheet of printer paper. But in their effort to be “greener”, they will now have 1 card printed per sheet of paper. How is this “greener”, and how does it save the poor trees? More trees will now die because of their stupidity. I’m amazed at how ridicules this is. I guess they figure it’s on the employees tree-killin’ tab and not theirs, so they can still claim they’re “greener. It’s just silly.

The Chinese government owns a lot of US debt and some folks find this sinister. There is no reason to. Much of our debt is owned by countries that trade with us and have a positive trade imbalance with us – meaning we buy more from them then they buy from us.
Japan is by far the largest holder of US debt. They rarely spend any money domestically which accounts for their very low consumer consumption. They also are famous savers but their interest rates have been very low at 1$% for a decade so they park their cash in US treasuries where it will be the safest in the world and they make better interest.
Their companies tend to leave their dollars here for the same reason and they tend to spend them here when ever possible. The reason they want to spend them here buying property building companies and factories is because the dollars value has fallen 35% on the global market. IF they take their dollars home or spend them elsewhere, they take a 35% loss immediately. If they keep them here or spend them here, they do not lose this 34%.
The same is true for China. They used to be almost forced by the currency markets decline of the dollars value to buy US debt to not take this huge loss. Now they are getting smart like the Japanese. The Chines just bought 10% of Blackstone group to invest their $1 trillion dollars in US assets rather than debt.
As a result of this Chinese purchase, Blackstone bought the company I work for and the Chinese will soon own 10% of one of the largest food distribution companies in the USA. They will eventually end up owning at least $1 Trillion dollars worth of US capital assets.
Don’t worry, the Chinese are not going to sell their US debt or buy up the entire USA because they have become capitalists and they love being rich and able to travel the world as kings instead of being poor and stuck at home with foul smelling Pandas. And no, they are not going to poison your food either

The Real AJ,
All I can figure is they know only a small percentage actually use the cards, maybe ten percent. If the other ninety percent never print the cards, it’s greener.
Ultimately, it costs the company nothing to send emails, but cards have a price. I imagine that’s the driving motivation more than ecology.
They may, however, be missing a segment of their target population that doesn’t have email or check it frequently enough to take advantage of the discounts.

My new employer is able to get my wife and I on their group insurance policy. As you may recall, a job change created a situation where we moved and all of the doctors, hospitals and labs are out of network. We’ve had to pay premiums ($1483 per month) and prescriptions ($1562 per month) and it was killing us.
I’m not sure yet if the new insurance will pay the prescriptions, but at least I won’t have to pay the premiums

Make it Man,
You got a small and short reprieve yesterday when the fed took the rate down another 1/4 point. They could have easily not done so, the dollar would have instantly climbed through the roof and commodities would he plunged more than they have recently. I am short gold with puts as a result and it is down quite a bit. Steel will plunge shortly and you will get mails for nothing before you can spit.
Long term commodities will go higher as China and India continue to grow but, short term, all of them now have the dollar bust priced in and there is huge speculation on the long side by, what I call, bubble investors. As soon as the Fed supports the dollar, the long speculation will collapse as the dollar rises and nails will given away as unnecessary waste. But these low prices won’t last long. Hope you didn’t buy nails at the top of the market.

March 14-28 will go down in history as the short term bottom of the dollar and US stock markets.
For long term investors those were days like right after 911 and bursting of the dot com bubble to invent for the long term at rock bottom prices. For US financials, it may have been the best time to buy in a generation.
TALRI investors are not long term investors but they closed out their short positions before the 14th (on the 11th of March) and have been optioned long calls on Financial and NASDAQ 100 ETF’s that double the return of the index using options themselves. Nothing like buying options on options to leverage returns and still be investing the most low risk way. It should be illegal

Sorry to whoever asked about Blackstone as an investment not too long ago. I said to not get in as the price should go lower since they relied so much on borrowed capital the their capital market was collapsing and in spite of the Chines buying 10% of BX before they went public at $34 last June.
Since our company was negotiating with Blackstone to be bought at that time, I was limited in what I could say about Blackstone to public knowledge due to the SEC required quiet period.
Well, the quite period is over, and Blackstone did go down much more and hit its low in mid March at $14 and change. Any time on its way back up to $16.50 was the time to buy but I was limited again and couldn’t legally get in until $15.50 myself – but I have a very small stake compared to calls in UYG and QLD. I bought some more calls of both yesterday as the market collapsed after 3:30 EDST yesterday. What a buying opportunity.
Did anyone notice the liars on the left were oh so wrong again about the US economy being in a recession in the first quarter. It grew at .6%^ instead. That idiot Shumer then went on TV with the stupid Senator Dodd and they both said that they don’t care what the recession rules are – their data shows the evil rich 10% in America might have not been in a recession but the other 90% of Americans were. They are insane
Never pay any attention to what they say concerning your money or your life.

Thanks Llama (#9) It makes sense.
However, their (China’s) actions, as reported by Bill Gertz in the Washington Times and by Qiao and Wang in Unrestricted Warfare, it appears that they wish to, at least, dominate the Pacific. (There’s a military word for this, but I can’t think of it.)
China is going to have a problem with it’s new prosperity. When a guy gets a little ahead, he going to want a slab of fatback with his grits and gravy. Then, he’s going to want an indoor bathroom, then his wife is going to want a stove that turns on and off. There’s no satisfying people.
A country with their limited resources will need resources. That’s the position Japan was in until they learned that they could buy the iron and turn it into cars.
I have a map, which you’ve probably seen. It shows the GDP of various nations WRT the US. (Finland = Colorado, Uzbekistan = Wyoming, Canada = Texas, etc.) But it isn’t comforting to know that most of our manufacturing capability is being transferred offshore. “If they can do it cheaper than we can, let them do it.” OK, but what can we do? How long is it possible to maintain a trade deficit?
You’re short gold? Do you think it has peaked?

Chas, I submit the world works netter and is safer with two superpowers instead of one.
China should be our best friend going forward and they are creating and will create their own sphere of influence that they will be responsible for. A superpower does not mean that they dominate, it means they protect for the good of all.
The Russians were just horrible as a superpower with their huge fears and egos. We do not know how China will be but their capitalistic ways mean that they may be at the very least way more friendly than Russia ever was or is to this day.
It meas that we can shape and mold them to be more than they can be on their own and the USA will be more than it could ever be on its own. Together we can do great things for the world and ourselves- things we could never accomplish on our own without a powerfully capitalistic surepower who will gladly shoulder the load for all the right reasons.
This was why Nixon opened up to China in the foist place. The dreams of many are nearly complete

StuBob An Victoria make strange bedfellows,
It took much effort to get the Chinese to embrace Capitalism and probably the hand of God too for that matter.
It will take less time for them to allow other freedoms as well. There is a price for their admission into the Superpower Club, something that was learned from Russian experiences.
How soon people forget what is truly possible and that God works in mysterious ways to provide things no person or group of persons could ever provide without Him.
I remember, not long ago at all that religious freedoms were impossible in Russia but not today.
Oh ye of little faith, need to pray for God’s help in our China endeavor and that we as men have the right character attributes not to accept a lesser China than what we want and require to make a better world that God would be happier with. Give up wanting it so much and do the easy and simple things man can do to help get them instead. God does help those who help themselves and it doesn’t take that much on our par.
God answers prayer and the right China is “a piece of cake” for Him no matter what you do or do not do .

MIM,
How can you say the number of posts has declined due to wordpress? As I remember, it made you post one message (on another thread) about four times. That’s an increase, not a decrease.
I wouldn’t necessarily blame wordpress, either. I have a wordpress blog, and so far as I know no comments have been sucked into the black hole where they disappear to on this blog. (Though Peter L’s comments occasionally get marked as spam and I have to de-spam them.) When I set up my blog, I was given the option to pay for the privilege of having more control over the blog by using software tools that let me do more stuff. I’m assuming that’s what WoW does, since this doesn’t look much like the usual wordpress blogs. The basic wordpress blog software is – pretty basic.
BTW, Peter L, my sister’s comments wind up in the spam isolation unit also. I have no idea why. I try to check every day so your comments don’t languish in there for too long with the offers for insurance and prescription medicines.

I do not believe the Chinese are our friends. If they were, we would have no problems with North Korea. They want to keep that pot boiling. They are building a large, blue water navy in order to challenge ours. They have deliberately demonstrated the capability to down our satellites. Our navy permits their officers to view our exercises, but they forbid observation of theirs. They have bought (mostly from the Clintons), and stolen missile and other technology. I can’t believe we need two superpowers in the world. One benign (US) superpower is enough. China is likely only interested in controlling the Pacific. But so was Japan in 1941.
It is not good that everything in WalMart is made in China.

Interesting that a conservative Christian would be praising a country that persecutes Christians and has forced abortions. What’s next? The possibilities dazzle the mind.
To think that China won’t use it’s growing financial and economic strength to try and change US foreign policy someday is hopelessly naive. The day will come when they will do something like blockade Taiwan and tell the US that if we interfere they will call in their loans and crash our economy. They’re going to do what’s in the national self-interest. Hide and watch.

May 1 is a “big” day in my world: All my life it was my mom’s birthday; though she’s now with the Lord, I can’t help but think of her today. It’s also the day I officially started freelancing five years ago! (I left Chicago April 29, moved to Tennessee April 30, and then ran errands on May 1. Since my computer wasn’t set up yet, I ran to the library to send e-mails to my publishers to tell them I was in business.) Anyway, it’s great to have made it five years.
I just got an e-mail about my willingness to do radio interviews in connection to my second book (it has a great “hook” to current stuff that might help sales tremendously, for any of you who are praying for me–I’d love to see sales shoot up in the next couple months). I e-mailed back that of course I’m interested, and sent a list of questions for stations to ask me–I know from my first book that that helps the station AND it helps me, because I can study the questions and know what they’re most likely to ask. And if they don’t bother to read the book, having prepared questions saves them from asking irrelevant questions; they can still sound intelligent, with less effort.
I also have an elderly neighbor who shares my mom’s birthday, so I’m going to sign off and run down the street and wish her a happy birthday.

There must be blizzard conditions in Hell right now.
For I agree with Anlir on the following:
“To think that China won’t use it’s growing financial and economic strength to try and change US foreign policy someday is hopelessly naive. The day will come when they will do something like blockade Taiwan and tell the US that if we interfere they will call in their loans and crash our economy. Except what China does will not be in the ‘national interest’; instead, it will in the interest of the few at the top of the totalitarian regime that rides that country like a horseman of the Apocalypse.
The highly constrained ‘free market’ in Red China only exists as long as the Communist Party and the mammoth Red Army tolerate it – they could care less about Mom and Pop operations on the streets of Beijing. The major ‘industries’ and ‘company concerns’ that exist in China are essentially nothing but subservient arms of the all-powerful government. Think National Socialism on a scale that would make Hitler drool.
I do not think the situation with Red China is at all analogous to that of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a Frankenstein of different cultures, religions, nationalities which never jelled, not even under Stalin’s whip; Red China is much more monolithic. Tibet is an exception, but is nothing more than a splinter in the hide of the dragon.

When did I extol the greatness of a Communist China. I said they could be come a great superpower if handled and taught properly. They have come a long way in a short time. The hard part is over but as I said, there is much still to do yet now there is light at the end of the tunnel that never existed before.
Anlir, you once again miss-characterized my words and stretched them to make them appear as horrible as possible but you are famous for it, I expect it but it is the reason you can never be trusted.
Fear, pride and ego cause failure every time. It keeps people from being willing to do even the most simple things required for success. I see to much fear here and pride goes before the fall. I ecpect from ther left always but form the Christian right……..
If we do our part to force China to change their ways in ways we require in order for them to join the Superpower club, I assure that God will do his and China will change. But youi better start avoiuding all fear, pride and ego if whe hope to be succussful at it.

As per salaries, the Personnel Committee usually comes wanting to give the pastor a parsenage in a gated community, two Mercedes, and a ten million line of credit. The BPC wants to give food stamps and store coupons. They ususally come up with something reasonable.
