Meditation 5.3
On Saturdays, we consider a passage of Scripture:
But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.” And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more.

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and God, we must accept other Christians as our family. They may be poor and different, but since they are His they must be ours. We choose to be among them and so forever link our future with them.

Good insight, Samuel.

On a personal level, Ruth’s dedication is an example for us all. She dedicated her life to the God of the Jews.
I can’t help but read Ruth through a Messianic lens. A Gentile is brought into the Jewish household of faith where she meets her Kinsman Redeemer who grants her the inheritance a nearer (Jewish) kin rejected. The book of Ruth illuminates so much of the Torah and how the Messiah would fulfill it.
Jesus the Messiah leaps off of every page of the Old Testament. (Gal 3:24)

Mrs L used this as part of her marriage vows.

Xion, when I read the verse, I was thinking exactly your post! Thank you!
Peter, It is not often thought of as a wedding verse but it is very appropriate. Especially if it shows Mrs. L’s dedication to your whole family. Was this true?

MTCon,
Actually I was under the impression that it was pretty popular to use for weddings. There’s a song based on it, that we used in our wedding, and I think the song is often sung in that context.
I was not close to the family I grew up in, for reasons I’ve told about before on this blog (mental illness, physical/emotional abuse). I was thrilled to marry into a family that I could feel part of and be loved by them and love them. And the words also speak to my intention for that relationship to be lifelong.
