Meditation 5.10
On Saturdays, we consider a passage of Scripture. Today’s selection is in honor of our mothers:
An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life.
She seeks wool and flax,
and works with willing hands.
She is like the ships of the merchant;
she brings her food from afar.
She rises while it is yet night
and provides food for her household
and portions for her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
She dresses herself with strength
and makes her arms strong.
She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She puts her hands to the distaff,
and her hands hold the spindle.
She opens her hand to the poor
and reaches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of snow for her household,
for all her household are clothed in scarlet.
She makes bed coverings for herself;
her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates
when he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them;
she delivers sashes to the merchant.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women have done excellently,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands,
and let her works praise her in the gates.

Interesting – why do so many Christians feel moms cannot work outside the home? Clearly, in this passage, mom is working! She is buying fields and planting vineyards, she is making clothing and selling it. Interesting.

She does not appear to be lazy or self centered. Hmmm, something to be learned here.

My favorite part is ‘her clothing are fine linen and purple’.
And yes, she is a very busy mom and wife.
How was your trip Mumsee?

I’ve heard (& have previously mentioned here on the blog) that these verses describe a godly woman over the course of her life. She didn’t necessarily do all these things all at one period of life.
Also, one of the differences in our modern lives vs. much of the past is that we now have more of a dividing line between work life & family life.

And, I have observed women who are actually like this. They live in such a way that they are a blessing to those around them. This proverb is an encouragement to go ahead and be those things. We are all given the same amount of time and are expected to do with that time what we can to glorify Him. Now, the servants might help. But I have seen it done and done well by many women without that extra help. I have also seen women trying to do it at the expense of their families, not such a good idea.

Happy Mother’s Day!
I love these passages and I am sure there are a few women out there like this. There are some fantastic women and sometimes I wonder “what if…”, but then I snap out of it.
I married a woman who will freely admit that she is the opposite of every one of these verses. Pick a sentence and that’s definately not her.
And so, what is one to do in this situation? We used to go to classes at church with 10 steps to being a better parent, spouse, etc. as though that were some form of holiness. It was list after list of things to work on, but to what end? My wife has no interest in any of this. We were miserable and not very holy.
Then we discovered the Jesus we never knew. This Jesus loves the unlovable. He accepts you just as you are. We want his holiness, not our own.
And so, I have chosen to accept my wife just as she is until death do us part. I am committed to this woman, even though she does not begin to measure up to Solomon’s standard. But it does not matter.
I now view life as an opportunity to practice the only commandment we have, i.e. to love one another. This is not for everyone, but in our circumstance its all we’ve got! So go easy on us!

“The heart of her husband trusts in her”
Sounds like she fits the bill, Xion.

Wow, that made my day! Thanks Mumsee.

This excellent wife could also be a metaphor for the church, the Bride of Christ.
Church missions bring food from afar and reach out to the poor. We buy fields and put up churches, schools, hospitals to reach the community. The light of Christ does not go out by night. The fruit of her efforts praise her in the gates…
