Dressed for arrest
A Texas senior left her prom in handcuffs after she arrived at the event in a dress school officials called inappropriate.
[Marche Taylor] was told her custom-made dress violated the school dress code.
“She shook her head, she was like ‘you are not getting into this prom,’” said Taylor. “We were arguing back and forth because I wanted to know why I can’t get into my prom.”
Even after offering to provide more cover, Taylor was denied access to the final soiree of the school year.
At that point, Taylor said she was furious. She said if she couldn’t get in, she wanted her money back.
Things got so bad that someone called the police. Officers showed up, handcuffed her and escorted her out.
Taylor still wants her money back–but does she deserve a refund?

That’s not a dress. That’s a loin cloth.
Kristin, I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your question was rhetorical.

She said, “Everybody else liked my dress.” Well, I’m sure the adolescent boys did. Or was it the 98% of her body not covered by the dress?
Report comment to moderator
Refund? Nope. If anything, she should be fined. Proms with adults in charge must not be meat markets, even if TV, the internet, and many commercials do their best to make such a market seem like the norm.

She has no shame. Or taste. Or a clue. Or proper parenting. Sad.

The news coverage would have been better had they also indicated what the school standards were. If they were vague, along the order of “we’ll know when we see it,” then inappropriate as I might think the dress is, it is hard to see how the school has much standing.
(And of course, we don’t see what the other girls were wearing. Would that also make a difference?)
On another note, the culture has generally fallen into a pattern of giving girls the sexy-trash-tart look as a standard. So the young lady may also be a (willing) fashion victim as well.

I think she probably does deserve a refund. Unless bare shoulders, cleavage, bare backs, etc are ordinarily allowed, I seriously doubt that every young woman present was in strict compliance. She had a reasonable expectation that the dress code would be relaxed. Also, the article says she offered to cover up. We can conclude that she didn’t handle the situation in a, ah, mature way, since she was finally forcibly removed, but a refund seems like a good compromise.

Oh, the Real AJ took the words right out of my mouth.

Oh please Harris. Victim my foot.
No, she shouldn’t receive a refund.

Gravatar, the high schools I have dealt with–both as student and teacher–do relax the dress code for prom. However, they also make very clear what is and is not appropriate–typically, bare midriffs are still considered against the rules, among other things. There was also a clear understanding in my schools that violation of dress code meant a student could not enter the event and would not receive a refund. The reporter did not provide adequate information in this story, but I would assume those things are standard protocol in today’s school culture.
Also, her “offer” to cover up may or may not have been sufficient to comply with the dress code policy.

Are you sure she was going to a Prom and wanted her money back? There must be some mistake.
It looks like she was actually going to work as a stripper instead and, since she was arrested, she lost way more than the few dollars the prom might have cost, to obvious police brutality. She was denied her right to work, victimized, deserves restitution and should sue everyone in sight, including her mother and father if she knows who they are.
I’m guessing since she is now in a huge financial hole with lawyer bills and all she will be too busy working at the club on election night to get out and vote for John McCain

As the cultural “dress code” slides to really lewd, many schools (even public) have tightened theirs up, as my grandson’s did last year. If this school is one of those, and the girl had to make her own dress to get one bare enough, I doubt she did this not knowing the score.
Sorry, no refund. Where were this girl’s parents?

OK, watch the video folks. Breitbart has one too. She wanted to wrap the trail around her waist to cover herself. She was then told she still couldn’t get in because she had no undergarments on. That’s nasty. And she was only handcuffed because she caused a scene, not because of the dress.

WIGLAF: That’s not a dress. That’s a loin cloth.
Or lingerie ….
She deserved not to go to prom.
What made her want to wear this hideous thing?
Report comment to moderator
LLama,
She wasn’t dressed to work as a stripper–she didn’t have enough on to make it worthwhile!
Once again, the media has given the attention they were wanting to get. They know how to work the system. The media gives them exactly what they want.

I do physical exams on people with less skin showing. Her mother must be very proud.
Give her the money back if it’ll shut her up. Then give her a Miss Manners book and force her to take detention until she’s read it and passed a test on it.

The report on CNN showed a copy of the school dress code, which the students had to sign before they could attend the dance. Item 1 clearly says that there was to be no more than one inch of midriff visible [CNN report is available on YouTube, but hard to read unless you pause]. The young woman knew the rules and wore the dress anyway. Wrapping the train around her waist would have only lasted until she got inside the ballroom, then she would have unwrapped it and gloated about beating the school rules all night. Not only would I not give a refund, I would think long and hard about letting her graduate with her class. Kids have been kept from that ceremony for senior pranks, why not for deliberately breaking a rule and causing a scene? She got her 15 minutes of fame, maybe she should learn that actions have consequences.
Anybody see the prom video O’Reilly showed last night? 17 year old kids that would put the dance pros of “Dirty Dancing” to shame. Plainly and simply, it was overt sex on the dance floor. And the “chaperones” did nothing.

#12 the real AJ,
She was then told she still couldn’t get in because she had no undergarments on.
I stand corrected. She must have been working at a totally nude strip club instead, so not have undergarments on before ,during or after work would be expected

Kayvee,
If that’s so, I change my vote.

#16 KAVEE,
How did you like the way the school superintendent answered O’Reilly’s questions about the Dirty Dancing. He seemed a little stunned, almost went white, when O’Reilly said that every school district chaperon who was at the dance and did not thing to stop it should be fired and heads should roll.
I got the feeling that the superintendent didn’t see much wrong with the student dancing and was disappointed that he couldn’t see it in person or possibly even participate in it
No heads will roll but there might be few teachers of the year that come out of it

If the rules were sufficiantly clear to inform a reasonably inteligent person what was not permitted, and they were enforced uniformly, then she has no valid complaint.
If bare midriffs were not permitted, she wasn’t even close to compliance.
Assuming uniform enforcement, then the school was right to turn her away.

#19 Llama: I noticed on the screen caption that he was the interim superintendent. I wondered why the original superintendent is no longer at the school, and if this guy was more concerned with getting along with the teacher’s union than with student/teacher behavior. He seem surprised that O’Reilly confronted him with the fact that the actions at the dance were inappropriate and his responsibility.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Miss Taylor was not arrested for inappropriate attire. She was arrested for refusing to leave after being informed she would not be admitted for appropriate attire.
Some of the headlines in a Google News search for “Marche Taylor”:
- Marche Taylor Arrested for Skimpy Prom Dress in Houston
- Houston Teen Arrested Over Skimpy Prom Gown
- Dressing Skimpy Could Result In Arrest
And even our own Kristin Chapman’s story starts out:
“A Texas senior left her prom in handcuffs after she arrived at the event in a dress school officials called inappropriate.” Uh, no. If anything, that sounds like the she probably started telling the story to her parents. “I was arrested because of my dress!”
Now how about this: “A Texas senior left her prom in handcuffs when she refused to leave peacefully after being told by school officials that her dress was inappropriate.” Now that’s more like honest, right up front.

It was a loin cloth.
I agree with #1.
Mind you, not everyone could sport that style, she did okay.
No, she’s not a victim.
This will lead to some sort of lucrative fame for her.

Loin cloth heck.
It’s see through lingerie. I doubt very much that she even wore any underwear. Nothing is left to the imagination here. I’d bet you a $50 that you could see everything that girls got.
I sure as Death and Taxes wouldn’t let my daughter wear such a thing…

kayVee [16] — If she had to sign, that changes everything. Clear rules, clear violation (so sorry, no refund).
VS — you may have misunderstood me. Mine was the same point Llama [10] and Jane [11] were making: the model of fashionable dress for young women these days is that of the stripper, or as others describe a porn aesthetic. This cultural attitude is one that invites girls in; like all such allures it is partially outside, and partially a matter of the heart. Young women become both willing participants and victim of a corrupting ideology.

A signed dress code changes nothing in my veiw. Get real. The inmates should not run the asylum.
If an adult in a responsible role of authority tells a high school girl that it is inappropriate, then it is inappropriate, period.
Disrespect for authority is no virtue. In fact, it is unacceptable. When we tolerate such disrespect for authority and demand detailed legal codes for everything we do, the WE are the ones guilty of mandating extreme legalism and a tyranny of rules.

I am lucky and thankful that I have never caught my daughter ever dressed like a stripper.
I am also 100% positive that she too is glad and thankful that I have never caught her dressed like a stripper.
Nothing like decent parental example, approved rules, high standards with appropriate goals and guidance.
There is no substitute – or wishing to hope for change allowed

Llama,
There is nothing better than to have those we love abide by our rules and be decent. When our daughter went to college, she told us she felt guilty when she stayed out past 1 AM.
DON’T BACK DOWN! We always told the kids they’d thank us when they were 80! But the thanks came much sooner.

She’s hot in that dress. Not appropriate for prom though. No refund.

She appears to have a promising career ahead of her as a risque fashion designer.
But as a candidate for a good prom dress, this is one incredibly clueless girl.
Report comment to moderator
I would guess that most high schools have dress codes that mean virtually nothing. Perhaps the school turns a blind eye to the everyday dress codes and this young woman was gambling that the same would happen at the prom.

I dunno…I see kids with “Bootylicious” across their backsides and they aren’t arrested…
I see girls with shirts that appear to serve as sausage casings and haave slogans such as “You can’t rape the willing”. Cheerleaders outfits are not so modest…These folks walk the halls of high schools daily and grace the sports fields to the cheering of parents and officials.
The kids dress is tasteless and revealing…but this is a place where they also hand out condoms…so why should she suddenly expect modesty and decency is the order of the day for the prom? A refund…why does prom cost so much that schools charge and the kids arrive in Limo’s?
