Rants! & Raves! 5.16
Here it is, Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off about the week past. Remember the rules:
1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re pleased about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.
2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re ticked about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.
3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.
Have fun!

Rave: My husband’s work schedule was changed so he can be in town w/ me when I hear back from my biopsy. Rejoicing!
Rant: While youngest daughter was looking for a lid to the salad bowl, she knocked over the lamp oil (Long story) spilling 6-8 oz in my freshly mopped kitchen floor. At the exact same time, spaghetti noodles are boiling over on the stove and oldest daughter is crying on my shoulder on the phone.
Rave: Family!

Thirteen years ago, Elvera, I and the grandkids were walking by the capitol. A tour guide was lounging by the wall. He said to Mary, “How old are you?”
“Ten”
“I’m going to use your comment on my next tour.”
What Mary had said to us was, “It’s kinda boring when you just read about it, but it’s really interesting when you see all the places where it happened.”
It’s a good area for taking children ten and older. What we did is take them to Williamsburg, then over to Yorktown and Jamestown. That usually took about three days. We always capped it off then with a trip to Busch Gardens. The girls are grown now, but they still have those straw hats Elvera bought them years ago. $25.00 each. They’re only $26.00 now.

Deb. I can relate. I’ve had a week like that. Why is it that crises always seem to snowball?
I had a tough time last Friday because I couldn’t get my databases transferred to the new version of our design software, so that was hanging over my head… and then the boss called me Saturday afternoon and said “Guess what I’m looking at? A blank screen.” His hard drive was on the way out. So I was under the gun first thing on Monday morning. Then the bookkeeper says her Internet Explorer is not working and can I help her with the Quickbooks upgrade? Then since I had my computer tied up with something, I was using the spare PC out in the showroom when it started giving messages about the fan not working and to shut it down. At about the same time the CNC operator came in from the shop and told me that a program had crashed the CNC Router’s drill bank into the table, and what was wrong, and could I fix it? (I called tech support for that too.) I put off tech support for the design software three or four times trying to get the HD back up and running (after searching high and low for the Windows XP disk I finally found it in a co-workers closet). It took until Monday evening to get the HD running because the secondary drive or the network card kept hanging up the install. Finally reseated the NIC, and unplugged the secondary, and the install proceeded. Then the CNC tech support called me (I forget which day now – it’s all become a blur) and I figured out how to fix our crashing problem – good to know for future reference. Then of course our new paint shaker came in, and I had to make sure the old one was crated up and shipped off, but the truck came before I was ready. We don’t ship things very often so of course it’s disruptive to find and use all the tools necessary.
And… I can’t remember what all else. Like I said, it’s all become a blur.
Things have finally settled down, and now I can finally get back to… the install and database transfer that I was working on last Friday.
I love my job. It’s never boring.

Get yourself some local honey…
Good advice. Long distance romance stinks!

RAVE: People like Make it Man who can do the above
RANT: People like me who, despite having the “easiest camera in the world to operate,” still managed to reformat the memory stick and lose irreplaceable pictures.
RAVE: Programs that can do something with the memory stick and retrieve the photos
RANT: It didn’t work with my camera.

I”ve heard about the local honey thing. Both my husband and I (and all the kids and grandkids!) could benefit, but wonder how far is local?
That is a good book, Chas. I hope someday we can also do a similar trip. Too late for the kids. Maybe the grandkids?

Rave–The sun is shining and it is suppose to be in the 80’s this weekend. That means golf! And lots of sunscreen.
Rant–We really do need a good soaking rain. That means we have to get the sprinklers going.

Michelle!
Try it on another computer. Sometimes some computers don’t recognize the camera as a drive. Or.. if you have a card reader, then you can do it that way, because then the software recognizes the drive.
I was successfully able to recover photos previously deleted by accident this way.

Rant: Senate passes farm bill. Talk about adding fuel to the fire of rising food prices. Again, greed over charity at work.
Rave: We got through another month. YHWH YRH!

Chas – I did recommend that book by R Alcorn. Glad you enjoyed it.

Rave: A prominent government official went through town and gave $1000 dollars to two different schools in town. (Remember, I don’t live in the U.S. so it’s no one you know!)
Rant: The government official ordered the schools to use the money for a party.
(To put it into perspective, in this economy, $1000 could pay my 20 employees salaries for a month. It could buy 25 100 lb. bags of rice at a time when people are going hungry because the price of rice is so high.) Grrr!
Rant: My phone line/internet connection is terrible! I can only stay connected for about 5 minutes at a time and it is very slow. As I was typing this, I lost connection and the phone line is now beeping. You all may never see this, I might just be talking to myself (which is not all that unusual).
Rave: Because I let my employees attend the party mentioned above, I got to attend the baby-naming party for my friend’s grandson. (When the employees are away, the boss will play!)

Happy face: Beautiful sunshiney day.
Happy face: Grass is growing nearly to backpocket height and mower is still broken so I am pushing the older John Deere mower around the five acres, thoroughly enjoying the slower pace.
Happy face: People coming for a barbecue tomorrow but they don’t care if all the grass is mowed or not, just so there is room to sit around gabbing.
Happy face: Daughter is off to a club fair for the weekend, she has been looking forward to going since before joining us. Third daughter is off on a jet boat ride learning about Hell’s Canyon. Younger son and I will be going this afternoon to the funeral of his bus driver who died unexpectedly and son wants to go.
