Under unusual weather
As I was walking out of King’s College at the
“The weather,” that was an interesting way to put it. I knew she had in mind the earthquakes that had just ripped
If you have an imagination, you can add to that inclement strangeness the recent economic weather, with yet more foreclosures and other cosmic ripples in the forecast. Stretch the concept a bit more by including rumors of worldwide “famines,” “nations rising up against nations,” throw in the 60th birthday of Israel, and you have the “unusual weather” Jesus described in Matthew 24, precursor of the storm to end all storms.
Christians are often ridiculed, even by other Christians, for seeing portents of the eschatological “birth pains.” But I’m not the one who said, “From the fig tree learn its lesson…when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates” (Matthew 24:33). Jesus himself commands his people to monitor the situation: “Keep watch” (v.42), “be ready” (v.44).

Andree,
You are fine writer and please realizei am not trying to ridicule you in any way. You say….

No, it is not the usual weather described by Jesus. It has nothing to do with a normal imagination either. God does not command us to be conspiracy nuts and exaggerate the smallest of normal things that happen all the time so that we scare ourselves into being prepared for Judgement Day.
If the depression leading into WW2 was say 100 times worse than today for people all over the world with even stranger weather to boot and that was not the beginning of the end times or even close to it then today is as good as it gets.
You must also realize the depression was also not even close to the worst of times either but it is about as bad as living humans can remember.
You need to test your assumptions for truth before being lead into erroneous conclusions.
Your stories will be just as good and more on the mark if you use less hyperbole.

When solid, ground breaking plans for a new temple is underway in Jerusalem, I would think many would begin to open their other eye as they rise from their couches, and step up the cable-remote, thumb action for the news channel updates.
“When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)” (Mt 24:15)

All right, here comes a tanget:
Couldn’t the “abomination of desolation” refer to the destruction of the Temple in AD 70 under Titus?
I tend to interpret these passages (and Revelation) entirely eschatalogically, but then for Sunday School we read Rev. 12, and the events there are mirrored nicely in the story of the Fall: there was no place found for Satan in Heaven. He doesn’t belong there anymore after the Fall.

I was a Y2K early adoptor. I asked my grandfather what he thought about the potential for problems. He said that in his lifetime they had lived through a number of similar ‘end of the world’ situations and that he figured he’d just do his best to get through the next one.
The smaller lessons I took away from Y2K were that society is fragile and could fall apart at any time, that even being self sufficient is fraught with danger in a time of crisis, and that God is the one to whom we need to turn whether we have ‘prepared’ for a crisis or not.
The big lesson was a reaffirmation of ‘but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD.’ (Jer. 9:24)
This takes me back to the last line of the post. The important thing is to be watching and ready. Not watching the signs so that I can put off being ready until the last moment. But to be ready right now by understanding and knowing God and exercising kindness, justice and righteousness like he does.

Wasn’t the passing of the Y2K nonevent about the time global warming became our chief concern? (ignoring those pesky terrorists, of course.)

kimberly,
Always many things to say about it…way beyond this comment site.
And yes, I believe these things are yet future.
“IMMEDIATELY after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:” (Mt 24:29)
Do you think we’re presently in a time where Satan deceives the nations no longer?
“..deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.” (Re 20:3)
If we walk with Christ, He will teach us.
Agreed?

kimberly,
As far as Rev. 12, the manchild was caught up at birth.
Was Jesus Christ ascended at birth?
Perhaps the manchild is a corporate company of overcomers seen in Rev. 14:1.

Praise the Lord – Jesus gave us snow in May! He must be about to come back.
My dogs loved it – I made a YouTube video:

Except that these items here could easily happen at the same time:
– Satan drawing a third part of the stars to Heaven (the devils who fell with him in his original fall)
– the war in Heaven between Michael and Satan
– and the dragon making war with the rest of the women’s children (other Christians).
Just having a fun discussion ….

Of course, there was something a little “always-winter-and-never-Christmas” about it ….

Does that mean it’s almost Christmastime?

One of these days, the faithful who are watching and praying and making note of current events to see how they square with prophecy will be right.
As the day draws nearer, the understanding becomes clearer.
Just saying…

The driving force in history is God and His plan for us. We’re certainly in that time when good has become evil and evil good on a large scale.
Spinoza, I watched your video, and I must tell you that I love those dogs! One of my favorite movies is “The Last Place on Earth” the video version of the book about Scott and Amundsen. As you probably know, the dogs were heroes!

I don’t have anything brilliant to say about this, but that’s a very charming picture that accompanies the post.

I second both Klasko’s post, and John M.’s.
The importance is to be ready and watching, also because we don’t know when our personal ‘end times’ will come. This thought came home to me because last week, a healthy young mother in her 20’s in my church almost died from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. Fortunately her husband happened to be home at the time, and they were able to keep her alive long enough to be airflighted to a University Hospital where she recovered after 2 days in intensive care.

Kimberly – But take a look at Job. Satan, our accuser, reported to the throne to accuse Job.
I recently read through Revelation again, keeping in mind the opinions of those who say that it is about the events surrounding the fall of Jerusalem. But it just seemed to me that there were too many things in it that pointed further into the future.
Well, it’ll be interesting when we get to Heaven to find out what it really is all about.

Why does everyone in Christendom believe that there has to be one definitive answer? It seems to me that prophecy often has more than one application. Scripture, especially prophecy is like an onion – it has many layers of meaning, none of which are mutually exclusive. The problem lies in a theologen or charismatic leader or denomination latching onto a particular interpretation as dogma. I believe that there is meaning in prophecy relevant to every generation.

Klasko – Yes, I agree. If I’d had more time when I wrote my previous comment, I would have mentioned that the events surrounding the fall of Jerusalem could have been a “type”, or picture, of a coming tribulation. Many events & symbols in the OT, I’m sure you know, were “types” of Christ, the Holy Spirit, or things to come.
