Christian music artist’s daughter killed in accident
The 5-year-old adopted daughter of Christian music artist Steven Curtis Chapman was killed yesterday in a tragic accident:
The girl, Maria Sue, was hit in the driveway of the family’s home Wednesday afternoon by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by her teenage brother, said Laura McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The brother, whose name and exact age weren’t available, apparently did not see the girl, McPherson said. No charges are expected.
“It looks like a tragic accident,” she said.
Our prayers go out to the Chapman family during this difficult time.

I feel so bad for the brother. He’ll have to live with this memory the rest of his life. I pray for God’s grace for the whole family at this awful time.

How awful! My heart and my prayers go out to the whole family.

To the Chapman family: Our hearts feel something of your pain. May you experience God’s grace and love in great measure in these days.

Oh, that is truly awful. The brother must feel terrible.
We know a couple who lost a daughter when the family had a single-vehicle accident in their minivan. She was not wearing a seatbelt and her father was driving too fast for the conditions.
Their family essentially disintegrated over it. The father was wracked with guilt and the mother blamed him. The other child withdrew totally. Infidelity and separation followed within a couple months. Let’s pray the Chapmans can deal with this.

My prayers go out for them. I have a friend who lost her teen daughter in a truck/train accident. Her brother had sent her on a mission and she was driving his truck. He went through a lot of hard times, because he blamed himself. He thought if he hadn’t asked her to go, she would still be alive. Only God can bring us the comfort we need in times like these. He is the God of comfort and I pray for their comfort and the healing of their hearts.

This is a real tragedy. I’ve liked Steven Curtis Chapman’s music for a long time, so of course I’m having that “I feel like I know him” reaction. But even apart from that, it’s a devastating thing for all involved.

According to the article some of the other children may have seen the accident. They really need prayer.

I feel horrible enough when I make a little mistake. I can’t imagine always knowing you killed your sister (even on accident).
I’ve liked Steven Curtis Chapman’s music too, Steve.
I hope the family comes through this all right.

I pray that Steven Curtis Chapman’s strong faith, which I pray his family shares with him stays strong through this ordeal. When one member of the body is huring, the rest of the body hurts too. I pray for them all in this that it will bring them closer to one another and to God.

I have a friend from college who backed over her two-year-old; she was taking the van from the garage, and the rest of the family (including her husband and the two-year-old) were all in the house, but somehow the two-year-old got out. She said it would have killed her or driven her insane except for her belief in the sovereignty of God, and I know she will still miss her little girl all her life. She and her family will survive, but they’ll never stop hurting.
Such suffering can destroy a family or bond them together; I’ve seen both. Pray that God will use this time to draw the family closer than ever before, and that the media spotlight on his family will not be overwhelming–that they can even bring glory to God in the secular media during this time they surely would rather have privacy but won’t be allowed it.

Some of the lyrics of one of his beautiful songs “Carry you to Jesus” are running through my mind.
I cannot comprehend the heartache. I wish I knew the words to say. But we know that we are at the mercy of God’s higher ways. And our ways are so small. I will carry you to Jesus on my knees.
I am crying along with you…

I also have to add that I am glad to know that he danced with Cinderella when he had the opportunity.

All I can say is God comfort them & help them all through this, especially the next few days & weeks.

These sorts of accidents are devasting, and distressingly common.
I hope all members of the family weather this as well as possible.

Oh, the poor son! Pray that God helps him and in the end redeems this horrible event.

I believe he was at my brother-in-law’s funeral.
Franklin is a tight community. I do know they will be overwhelmingly surrounded by love.
What a tragedy.
We must pray for the teenager and the family.
This is a lot of indescribable sorrow all the way around.

I just read this thread ….and to say the least, my heart has sunk into my chest. SteveG and I probably don’t agree on too many issues, but we do have a joint love for alot of the christian music that is available. Steve, I share your comment about having sort of a connection to Steven Curtis Chapman in that I have sung a couple of his songs in church.
I suppose all we can do is pray for the Chapman family, and hope that in some way God will bless them in some way.

May God’s peace and comfort fill their hearts and minds.

Oh, that’s horrible!
I happened to be at one of his concert the other day. Both of his teenaged sons were really involved on the tour. One played guitar…the other was on the drums. How horrific! They head an adoption ministry, I think named after that girl…and even his latest single is about his daughter growing up and dancing with her father. Sad.

Actually the ministry is ShoaHannah’s Hope…named after another adopted daughter….

I have read sooooo many anecdotes of children who are lost through fatal preventible accidents. If you have little ones or reside in a neighborhood overflowing with kids (esp kids who run the street or neighborhood unattended) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make a point of doing a good driveway pass around search before you drive off.
Lets hope this family can be spared recriminations.
I think now of the little girl abducted(?) in Portugal. Left unattended in a resort room while her parents were at a bar. They claim they ea took turns staggering back to the room to check in on their sleeping kids. Some say they might have sedated the children to help them sleep and the “lost girl” maybe got too much.
