Obama’s “top-secret” search
According to anonymous Democratic officials, Barack Obama is in a general election–mindset and has begun a “top-secret” search for the veep slot on his Democratic presidential ticket, hiring former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson to assist him. Johnson performed this same task for Democratic nominees John Kerry in 2004 and Walter Mondale in 1984. Obama, when asked by the Associated Press, denied that he retained the services of Mr. Johnson.
If you were a part of this super-secret mission, who would be on your short list?

A woman.

My hunch is Obama won’t pick Hillary Clinton.
The rumor is his wife doesn’t like her, she would be too much of a loose cannon and there has to be some bad blood between the two.
Besides by November a lot will be forgotten and most of Hillary’s supporters will vote for Obama anyway.

A white woman. Not Hillary. Her aggrieved fans would consider it tokenism. Not that that’s ironic or anything.
Or, Joe Lieberman.

My top 5 picks (in no particular order):
1. Sam Nunn – Southerner, foreign policy and military experience, gravitas.
2. Evan Bayh – former Governor of IN, Senator, moderate, midwesterner.
3. Jim Webb – former Secretary of the Navy under Reagan, Veteran, Senator, from Virginia
4. Janet Neapolitano – Governor of AZ, very popular, female, western state.
5. Bill Richardson – Governor of NM, former Secretary of Energy and UN Ambassador, western state, Latino.
I doubt She Who Will Not Be Named will make the short list.

Anlir, you guys should have nominated one of the folks on your list to start with.

Agreed that it will not be Mrs Clinton. Even Nancy Pelosi said so on PBS last night. He would do well to pick Richardson or some other prominent Hispanic. But I wouldn’t want to give him any good ideas. So, how about Jimmy Carter?

Peter L!, what a great idea!
Jimmy Carter for president!

Since there are no senators to the left of Obama, anyone he picks is a move toward the center.

I think Diane Feinstein would be a great pick. All though he apparently doesn’t need her to win CA–as mentioned on another thread–he could use a veteran politician who understands the game he so obviously does not.

A Latino gay woman from a big normally red state, like Texas or Georgia.

Good point. But when was the last time, if ever, the MSM called Obama “left wing”?
Any conservative is almost always called right wing.
Report comment to moderator
Adios,
Diane Feinstein?
If you’re going with a veteran politician who understands “the game”, the best by far would be Barney Frank. Their is no one in the House or the Senate who knows the rules better than he does. Well, maybe Senator Byrd, but he’s getting kinda feeble.
In any event, Obama’s campaign is about breaking up “the game” as it’s been played in Washington. So I doubt he’s going to pick an insider of “the game”.
We know one of the campaign themes of the far-right is going to be that Obama is a “leftist”. I don’t think it’s going to work. I get the sense that people aren’t scared by that “boogie man” this time around. They tried it in Mississippi just a few weeks ago and it totally backfired on the Republicans.
As long as Obama defines himself before the far-right has a chance to “swift boat” him, he’ll do fine.

#8 Xion,
If the rumor is true that Hugo Chavez was really born in El Paso, Texas to illegal alien oilfield roughnecks working for George Bush, he could possibly be Obama’s running mate with experience running a socialist state but he too would not be left of Obama

If Obama picks the lesbian governor of AZ Janet Napolitano as VP that would open the door for McCain to pick the gay Condi Rice as his VP which would easily put McCain over the top so Obama will not pick Napolitano.
Napolitano is just on the short list because Obama still wants to court the gay vote and try to appease at least some of the Hillary Feminazis out to castrate him for stealing the election that belonged to Hillary. That young, inexperienced and uppity Obama just couldn’t wait his turn.

LLama, sometimes I shake my head in disbelief of the crud you say. Condi Rice is certainly not homosexual.
Stubob #3: I believe Joe Leiberman has already thrown his support to John McCain.
Report comment to moderator
Interesting that Llama knows who the gay one’s are.
Shoot, I’m in the “family” and I’m totally unaware that Janet Napolitano was a member.
If Obama really wanted to court the “gay” vote, he’d pick Gavin Newsom.

What’s with Obama courting the gay vote? Who else are they going to vote for? His policies are perfect for them…

Anlir,
I strongly recommend getting your stomach pumped. The kool aid is taking effect…

Kidoist,
I don’t see anyone courting the vote of gay people. I mean, Obama is ok, but he’s no “Moses”. Clinton would throw gay people under the bus in a New York minute. McCain is beyond hope. Really, the Libertarians offer the best hope – and that would be like making out with your own sister.

“Condi Rice is certainly not homosexual.”
That’s a good one. Neither is Larry Craig.

Anlir, it’s funny that you put the word leftist in quotation marks. Have you looked at Obama’s voting record–the few times that he’s voted, that is.

National Journal says this about McCain- “He missed more than half of the votes in both the economic and foreign-policy categories. On social issues, which include immigration, McCain received a conservative score of 59.”
