I have vague memories of Sullivan. His problem was that the acts new once they had done Sullivan, it didnt matter if they ever got invited back. The Rolling Stones and the Doors also changed song lyrics. Ed wasnt amused.

I was always amused that his most famous song, "Bo Diddley", was also his name. It takes cajones to pull that off.

I enjoyed reading the Wiki entry that spoke of his TV appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.
<blockquote>

On November 20, 1955, he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show only to infuriate the host. "I did two songs and he got mad," Bo Diddley later recalled. "Ed Sullivan said that I was one of the first colored boys to ever double-cross him. Said that I wouldn't last six months". Bo Diddley was asked to sing Tennessee Ernie Ford's hit "Sixteen Tons", but when he appeared on stage, he sang "Bo Diddley." He was banned from further appearances.

Or for that matter, let's also remember J R Simplot -- the man who brought french fries to America!

Maybe it's my age, but a lot of people I once took for granted are now passing away...

As the heading for this section once had it,

no (man) knows his time.

If you embark on a career in pop music you can eventually wind up a towering icon. It isnt difficult so long as you avoid the booze, dope, multimarriages etc. This was a man who knew "up close and personal" all the big name greats: Elvis, Buddy Holly.
How is Little Richard (The Pride of Macon Georgia) these days??

And lets not forget long-time TV funnyman Harvey Korman!
