If the first had been last …
Commenting on a post from the other day, our friend Cheryl D. made an excellent point about the Michigan and Florida Democratic primaries that went against party rules:
The irony of all this is that Michigan and Florida moved their votes up, thinking they’d mean more. Not only were their votes stripped as a result … but I bet both states would love to have a really late primary this year.
Can you imagine the furious campaigning that could have been going on in those two states had they tried to be last instead of first? Seems like Jesus talked about something like that.

Indeed. That’s what the South Dakota representative on the Rules Committee said on Saturday.
“Everyone mocked us for going last in the Primaries. I bet you aren’t laughing now.”
From the standpoint of us C-SPAN junkies, it’s been a lot of fun.

From the standpoint of us GOP junkies (at least relatively speaking), it’s been a riot to watch — and promises to maybe remain that way, right up until the convention!

Outkast: I’m guessing it will continue to the convention. And then there will be a Democratic nominee who will proceed to clean McCain’s clock.
Do be sure to tell us how hard you’re laughing then.

I know of at least one local jurisdiction in MI where some Republicans made some political hay over the situation prior to the “primary” by spreading to word to the Dems in MI that their party really didn’t give a fig about them or their votes based upon its actions with regard to the primary. Some of the disenfranchised voters got the message. If I were a MI or a FL Dem, I’d be honked off with the party over this whole mess, most importantly for disenfranchising me.

Isn’t it amazing how there are still consequences to broken rules, even within the Donkey Party?

I’m not so sure I fully agree with the thesis of this post, at least not politically. There has still been a lot of hype on the latter end of this primary, but each state’s election does not seem to have much actual impact. For a long time now, Clinton has been winning many late primaries rather big, and yet Obama keeps coasting as the front runner. It seems to me that, all media hype aside, Super Tuesday still casts the dye.
This is not my specialty though. I could be wrong.
