Rants! & Raves! 6.6
Here it is, Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off about the week past. Remember the rules:
1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re pleased about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.
2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re ticked about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.
3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.
Have fun!

Rant: Summer heat. It’s already in the high 80’s here.
Rave: Water gun fights. The kid had a super soaker and I still defeated him soundly with a squirt bottle I use to water the plants.

Does this sound like any police state you know??
When D.C. police begin stopping cars at a “checkpoint” this weekend in the Trinidad neighborhood, they will record all license plate numbers, verify residents’ addresses and ask others for phone numbers of those they are visiting, according to a directive issued by Chief Cathy L. Lanier.
Lanier, who has been working on the “neighborhood safety zone” program for two months, said the checkpoints can expand to any neighborhood in response to violent crime. Police said it is a tool they plan to use to increase visibility, make arrests and gather intelligence.
Lanier’s directive also says that anyone who does not give a reason for entering a designated safety zone may be turned away, said law enforcement sources who declined to speak on the record because they were not authorized to release the directive. “Legitimate” purposes to be in the area include going to a doctor, church or community event or visiting friends or relatives, officials said. Individuals can show a flier for an event to gain entrance, for example.

Arcadia,
What they need is not more police state intervention. What they need are responsible citizens who carry handguns. I bet crime would go diminish in short order as justice gets dispensed to the crooks and hooligans.

I had three large Sweet Gum trees taken down on my property this week. One threatened my neighbors house (whew!), the other had a dead top in it, and threatened my house, and the third had a dead spot where lightning had hit it, and was right next to the power line. Because of that I had to have the power company drop the line before my tree man could cut the tree. Thankfully all went without a hitch, and we had the power back on and the trees down in a few hours. I think they were done, and everything cleaned up by 1:30. (You just don’t know how much work it is to clean up a tree until you’ve dragged a all the branches off of ONE tree all the way across your lot.) I’m so glad they had a chipper and miniature crawler to handle all that stuff. And that crawler was way COOL! Sure saves the back when picking up chunks of wood.
We kept the neighbors entertained the whole morning.
Sweet Gum is not usually a very desirable wood for turners. It’s a “weed” tree, and it’s usually pretty bland.
But one of these trees had some absolutely gorgeous color in it, and I spent several hours last night roughing out bowls that are going to be just fantastic! I filled up a large garbage can full of shavings….
Although none of my friends and fellow Woodturning Club members wanted any of this wood (too bad guys!) I contacted one fellow near Atlanta who will come by tomorrow morning and help me cut up the wood, at the same time he’s bringing me some Ash, and some Cherry Burl… And maybe some more cool stuff! Whoo!

MiM: What is your definition of responsible? Serious question. How do you sort out the people who are likely to pull out a gun when somebody cuts them off on road from those who are not? Those who will consistently keep their guns away from kids and visitors and thieves? Those who when the adrenaline is pumping are unlikely to blow away a neighbor’s infant in his car seat rather than the fleeing burglar they just have to take a shot at?
I respectfully submit that you can’t.
I guess the reason I picked up on the DC story is that about a month ago the small, vaguely upscale neighborhood I live in saw a noticeable increase in sleazy characters walking and driving through. Several buildings a couple of blocks away in different directions seemed to have unususal activity.
I would never have dreamed of asking the police to set up some kind of checkpoint where if I wanted to go to my home, I would have to convince a cop that even though I still have an out of state license, looked like hell and was driving a Lexus belonging to a housemate, I really do live here.
But, both I and a neighbor lady reported our discomfort to the cops and sure enough, last week, four houses within three blocks of here, got 5AM wake up calls and 12 or so folks were arrested. And so far, the streets have returned to normal.
There are lots of ways to deal with crime problems that don’t involve armed citizenry whipping out handguns whenever things seem to be awry and cops requesting “your paperz pleez” without any reasonable suspicion.

Arcadia,
Just like a lefty to not want to be willing to follow, or be unable to follow, simple rules for this rant /rave thread.
I suppose you are a victim and need special rules just for you

Arcadia,
Sounds like everyone just needs to take up woodturning….
I agree and understand the problem with finding “responsible” citizens. It’s tough to find folks who will handle firearms properly and responsibly. Unfortunately I think that it’s people who believe as you do, who have helped them disappear. When you dispense with Almighty God, then all kinds of things are permitted, and not all of them are good. I do not understand the disconnect in modern thinking between the lack of God beliefs, and the long downhill slide in society’s morality. When God is absent from the world view, then there’s no basis for ultimate truth, morality, or beauty.

Make It Man
I have some old growth redwood that you can have for wood turning. I know it is soft wood, but you might be interested. If so,

Rave
Daughter was sooooo cute in the little skit her school just put on. It integrated the music, dance, and art that each of the grades have been working on.
Rave
Wife was on TV the other morning, promoting the big festival her office of the Fish and Wildlife Service is putting on in Niagara Falls tomorrow. She co-ordinates the children’s activities for the festival and has grown the number of entries for the colouring contest five-fold, to nearly 600. So hopefully, a lot more kids will come, and bring their moms and dads
Rant
Shingles started developing over the weekend and were full-blown by Monday. VERY annoying.

Rave: A visit from my parents this weekend – always fun to have company!
Rant: Weather may not be conducive to outside activities, although the weather guys have been wrong most of the week.
Rant: It seems we are stuck in perpetual April here – cool, windy and rainy. Not that I have anything against April – in April! Or even in March!
Rave: Today is the beginning of summer vacation. In our house, it means son and daughter spending all summer at home with daddy – no daycare, and no daycare tuition this year! Although I work year round, it also means no carting kids with me in the morning or rushing to pick them up – I can get a bike ride in, or sleep a little later – like vacation for me, too!

Ooh – one more rave: My husband has come home with 3 large coolers full of food! At the end of the school year, they must clean out all freezers and fridges. He has gotten bags of shredded cheese, frozen veggies, frozen chicken patties, small cartons of milk – tons of stuff! What a blessing – he doesn’t get paid much, but at least they feed us sometimes!

Rant: Terrible internet connection continues. It’s been bad for about a month now.
Rave: Gully-washer rainstorm last night. Rainy season has arrived in The Gambia.
Rant: Rainy season has arrived with hot humid days and more bugs than you can imagine.
Rave: Pretty soon the bugs that look like red, fuzzy dots will be out. We only see them after the first few rains. Hey, we get excited about weird things here!

Rave: child-like faith–One of my little sons started coming down with the same virus that daughter had earlier this week, which included a very high fever. (She held out at 103.4 for three days-motrin only brought it to just below 102.) Anyway, my five year old said, “Mommy, I know I’ll get better, because I just prayed and asked God to help.” You know how sometimes us adults can think “how cute that is that he trusts so fully”, knowing that unfortunately he’ll still feel miserable for quite a while probably. Within 30 minutes, the color came back in his cheeks and eyes, and he wanted to run around and play. So, I took his temperature. It had gone from 103.6 to 98.1 in that short time. Nothing but the Lord….!
Rave: I *think* we’re still going out on our date tonight…
Rave: It’s hot here too, over 100 with the humidity–we don’t have ANY AC and live in an old farmhouse with a tin roof. Why is this a rave? I truly believe it makes my kids stronger. Bring it on!!!

Rave: Democratic primaries are finally over!
Rant: The general campaign begins.
Rave: Only five more months to the election!
Rant: Four years until we can get another chance to have a great candidate on the R ticket. (But I hope we hear nothing about campaign 2012 until 2011, but I know it will all start in November again.)
