BTW Kristin, How is Lynn doing since the last update? This old Navy Chief has an inquiring mind.
Report comment to moderator
CPO Joe, has Lynn been in sick bay and the rest of us not know it? Smoothe sailing and fair winds to her.
Does anyone out in WMB-land foresee any lasting harm to Christopher Dodd for his shameless prostituting himself for Angelo Mizolo and countrywide homeloans? Any day now I expect Dodd Almighty will go before a press conference, wag his finger and say “I did not have relations with that subprime lender. I didnt know VIP treatment meant special treatment. My sponsorship of the mortgage bailout bill is in no way connected to the big discount I got from Countrywide.”

LOL Sawgunner.
I know Lynn was laid up with Mono. I just wondered if she was any better since the last posting.
Us squids stick together don’t you know.

Sawgunner, Re. Chris Dodd. Check my post about Rep. James Clyburn D. SC last Tuesday. He earmarked over $6m, some to benefit his family. I said the voters in eastern SC don’t care.
Neither will Dodd’s voters. It doesn’t matter if Democrats are crooks.

I see in the paper where Rev. Barry Lynn and Americans United for Separation of Church and State are suing SC over a license plate. The plate has a cross superimposed over a staned glass window, and says “I Believe”. Seems to me the license plate is only equivalent to a bumper sticker for effect. They have “Lions” plates, “USC” and “Purdue” plates. I have so many choices, I chose none. But I can’t see where Rev. Lynn, et. al. have a case. Of course that doesn’t matter in the courts anymore, does it?

Chas, I do not remember the state, but I do believe something similar passed muster somewhere else, but this has to go the course. There will be 50 suits.

We in the Midwest have really been seeing the hand of God. Many of the efforts of men to hold back the mighty Mississippi have failed. It has gotten me to thinking that since the flood zone of the river is in some places several miles wide, is it a surprise when the water tries to go where it is supposed to go? Man came along and built these levies to control the water flow, but did not God put river bluffs for that purpose? Man decided to build cities along the river, not God. Is man the one intruding, and not the river?
I know I sound like an environmentalist, but after all the talk here of not rebuilding the below sea level area of New Orleans (which I say we should not do), I wonder if the same could be said of rebuilding cities in a flood plain. We were told in 1993 that the river would only reach these levels every 500 years, yet it has only been 15.
Just wondering.
Report comment to moderator
I thought the same thing about the rivers. The water is only going where it would naturally go, so, no, I don’t think you are an environmentalist, Peter L, just someone who looks at these situations realistically.
It made sense to build near a river for commercial purposes, but man has really tried to control them and won’t admit defeat. The levees have been rebuilt in New Orleans and they are saying that a Category 2 hurricane would cause the same damage. It’s stupid to rebuild there. The same problem with Venice. You can’t stop the planet, not really.
Report comment to moderator
Venice really is sinking … when I was there last summer, I saw the water lapping at the doors of houses, all the way over the “front porch” right up to the threshhold.
Report comment to moderator
Peter L., man can adjust to nature, and use naatural resources, but he can’t defeat nature. There are good things you can do in a floodplain, such as grow crops. But building a city is not one of them.
A major rant, if I can do it on this thread. You guys get all the rain, and we don’t get any. I really suspect with our reservoirs so low, and the ground so dry, we could have handled that rain.

Kimberly,
Did you know that they have to pay people to live there? Understandable actually, but it is an interesting place. It really sank in when we saw a hearse gondola go by on a canal and the efforts to take out the trash and sewage. I like my prairie, thank you.

Scientific Assessment Captures Effects of a Changing Climate on Extreme Weather Events in North America
June 19, 2008
The U.S. Climate Change Science Program and the Subcommittee on Global Change Research today released a scientific assessment that provides the first comprehensive analysis of observed and projected changes in weather and climate extremes in North America and U.S. territories. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change previously evaluated extreme weather and climate events on a global basis in this same context. However, there has not been a specific assessment across North America prior to this report.
Among the major findings reported in this assessment are that droughts, heavy downpours, excessive heat, and intense hurricanes are likely to become more commonplace as humans continue to increase the atmospheric concentrations of heat-trapping greenhouse gases.
The report is based on scientific evidence that a warming world will be accompanied by changes in the intensity, duration, frequency, and geographic extent of weather and climate extremes.
“This report addresses one of the most frequently asked questions about global warming: what will happen to weather and climate extremes? This synthesis and assessment product examines this question across North America and concludes that we are now witnessing and will increasingly experience more extreme weather and climate events,” said report co-chair Tom Karl, Ph.D., director of NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.…

A little while back I argued with Anlir about Code-Pink being guilty of treason and sedition. Here’s further proof from frontpagemag.
http://tinyurl.com/5ulxkx
And Obama has some explaining to do too.
From the link;
“Barack Obama now faces a question, not of experience, ideology, or judgment, but of decency. Will he return the money raised by someone so self-evidently opposed, not merely to victory in Iraq (they have that in common), but to our soldiers themselves? Anyone seeking to be a credible commander-in-chief of those forces, anyone deserving of their respect and sacrifice, must return her funds, renounce her organization, and refuse any support Code Pink might seek to offer his campaign.
Yet while he has been prompt to throw other longtime associates under a bus when problematic statements crop up, he has not yet lifted a finger in regards to Jodie Evans. Perhaps this is because, unlike Jeremiah Wright, Otis Moss, Michael Pfleger, or Jim Johnson, Evans offered more than rhetorical support.”
If anyone deserves a spot under the bus, it’s Code-Pink. I would actually applaud BO for it.
Hey Anlir, still think they’re just a bunch of harmless old women?

Re: #15
I still fail to see how they can jump to the conclusion that its man driving the global warming trend from that data, much less that it only affects heat and weather extremes, especially on only 50 years worth of data…

Well, the priests of technology have finally gotten around to providing us with a competing promise of everlasting life…
Across cultures, classes, and aeons, people have yearned to transcend death.
Bear that history in mind as you consider the creed of the singularitarians. Many of them fervently believe that in the next several decades we’ll have computers into which you’ll be able to upload your consciousness—the mysterious thing that makes you you. Then, with your consciousness able to go from mechanical body to mechanical body, or virtual paradise to virtual paradise, you’ll never need to face death, illness, bad food, or poor cellphone reception.
Now you know why the singularity has also been called the rapture of the geeks.…
For multiple reflections on this, see

Thorn,
And the unbelievable thing is that they jumped to those conclusions with very little peer review. Anthropogenic Global Warming is based on the IPCC document chapter 25 (or 26 – I forget) and there were only a few independent reviewers (like maybe 23) and only 3 of those were climate scientists.

Another quote from Arcadia’s Singularity article:
I’m not holding my breath. In fact, despite all the wonderful technological advances I expect from studying the brain and neuroscience, I predict absolute failure at “uploading consciousness”.

Query:
My husb and 12 y.o. son and daughter are heading to San Jose June 30-July 7 so the kids can participate in the National Fencing Championships. Yeah! They’ll get to see the 4th fireworks in the dark! Before midnight!
1) What are your opinions re: the best way to celebrate the 4th in that area?
2) What other local attractions should they not miss? Friday, Sat. and Sunday are pretty much the only days they have available for doing stuff on the area.
Thanks!

San Jose–
Take a day trip down to Monterey and visit the aquarium (it’s about 60-90 minutes one way). If you like dramatic scenery, go south to Carmel and a couple miles over the bridge on Highway 1 to Point Lobos State Park. Since you appear to be from Arkansas–or is that Alaska?–you might want to visit the beach at Santa Cruz, just so you can say you’ve done it. And if you are from Arkansas, you might take a one hour whale watching trip out of the wharf in Monterey. (We lived in Monterey for two years).
A trip to San Francisco, depending on the ages of your kids, could include the Golden Gate Bridge–walking over it can be exciting on a windy day–and/or the Exploratorium, not far from the bridge, which is a glorified hands-on science museum.
We’ve never made it over to Alcatraz, but that’s supposed to be a fun tour, again pick it up at Pier 39.
And if you like museums, the Legion of Honor (not far from the Golden Gate) has a lot of paintings, often interesting special exhibits, and a fantastic view.
As to the fourth of July in the city–don’t know, maybe at the ball park?
I was in San Jose last Thursday. There’s nothing much to see or do there–a high tech museum, but we breezed through it in an hour with my kids several years ago.
Have a good time!

Heard something interesting Sunday. A friend told me they heard about a couple who (as a joke) put their baby up on e-bay. (My disclaimer–I have no idea how ebay works, or if this is true…) Anyway, they said the Child Protection Services were all over them right away (as they SHOULD have been, even though it was a joke). Isn’t it odd that this caused such an immediate reaction, and yet its okay for women to enter “hospital” doors everyday to kill their babies…?

Victoria: Assuming that story is true, if the state had offered to pay for her medication ($48,000 a year), you’d be up in arms about the “socialism” of “state-run health care.”
There is no pleasing some of you.

Well, folks, it looks like Chuck Hagel wants to jump ship and show us he is really a Democrat:
Hagel says he’d consider VP offer from Obama
If that is the case, and McCain picks Lieberman, then we could have a Rep/Dem vs Dem/Rep “choice”. Vote 3rd party!

I was watching a German news program and they plan to listen in on the mosques. Apparently, Islam has no concept of “confession,” so they are not recognizing the “priest-pentitent privilege” and the Muslims feel they’re being singled out. I also read the other day that the EU is cracking down on immigration.

Tooth Fairy:
Ours always brought a Sacagawea dollar. We’ve heard of kids getting up to $10 under their pillows, but with three kids within a year of each other the payout would have been pretty heavy. And they all thought the golden dollar was pretty special.
Michelle, thanks for your SF/SJ recommendations. Other areas of interest would be related to history – earthquake, fire, Gold Rush. Thanks again.
