Good day to y’all!
Today’s quote is from an inventor: “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

Thomas Edison is the inverter. Interestingly enough though; Thomas Edison never graduated from college even though there is a college dedicated to him.

Well here is Yahoo spreading dis-information, by citing old NASA temp data that has been discredited, and saying that the past 20 years (or so) have been the hottest on record. What bunk. Tell a lie long enough and it becomes the truth I guess.

I have an old, yellow with age, clipping taped to my desk lamp. It says:
“What most people call failure may be completely mislabeled. Someone has said, Failure is never fatal and success is never final. It’s persistence that counts.

It’s like the guy who made a soda called 1Up, and it was a total flop, so he tried 2Up, 3Up, 4Up, 5Up, and 6Up, and then died in despair…and the next year, lo and behold, someone else invented 7Up…

Galadriel, I’ve also heard that some chemists were looking for a water displacement compound. They had 39 failures, then came up with a miricle solution they call WD-40.

Sigh…
Obama, Obama, Obama….
Focus on the Family did a segment on some of the things Obama said in a speech a couple of years ago.
Yep. You’re correct Obama. And it starts with you. It’s quite obvious to me that all those years in church haven’t enlightened you as to what the Bible is really about.

Tesla would have said that a little calculation instead of so much trial and error would have resulted in Edison needing a little less persistence.

Elijah preached that God wanted to see (among other things) justice done in Israel. Because Elijah opposed to the wickedness of the State — i.e., King Ahab — Ahab accused him of being “anti-Israel” (1 Kings 18:17).
We Americans rightly deride totalitarian States who condemn their dissidents for being “anti-Soviet” or “anti-China” or whatever.
And yet, when Americans who long for justice to be done in America — and in America’s name — speak out against the war, or torture of detainees, or militaristic foreign intervention, they are called “anti-American.”
Is anyone seeing a pattern here?

Frank I agree with you. The “peace” prior to the demise of Saddam & Sons was better (at least for Americans, I’m not sure if Iraqis themselves would agree). I’m sure Saddam would be selling oil much cheaper than our Saudi “allies”. And as for those Gitmo detainees, yes let us release them all and even give them bogus Virginia drivers licenses and not say anything if they overstay their visas.

MiM- Living in the flood zone has its advantages. FEMA is here helping out as much as possible. There are no trailers, because most Midwesterners have family and friends nearby who offer housing. Some schools, churches and civic centers also set up temporary housing. The Red Cross is all over the place (and on the news saying they are broke from all the weather events this year). In other words, we here are used to disasters and are prepared for it. I guess NO and other large cities should learn from us rural red necks.

I’ve awoken the last three mornings to the smell of smoke in the dusky air. The paper reports 842 fires burning in northern California. I’m not anywhere near a fire–yet–but this is eery. We’re advised not to go outside today because of air quality and people with respiratory problems who live in Mendocino County are encouraged to leave the area for at least 30 days!
Am I the only one who wonders about portents when flooding wipes out the grain crop, fires burn everywhere, drought threatens, etc?

Michelle–
You’re not the only one who wonders about portents, but generally we remember that people have been predicting the end of the world since 70 AD and try not to get too excited. Going out and sitting on roofs and qualifies as too excited.

RR that was tooooo cute.
This morning I was listening to a radio station that I generally hate, but sometimes you have to do such things to find out what kind of music your 10 (going on 20 much too big for her britches) daughter is trying to listen to. They had a character on named Kountry who was telling things that only a TRUE southerner knows.
1. Only a true southerner can point you in the direction of “over yonder”
2. Only a true southerner knows not to “cuss” the little ol lady going 30 mph you just say “bless her heart” (truly that is the ultimate in the south. Well, just bless their heart.)
3. Only a true southerner knows that opening day of deer season is a national holiday.
4. Only a true southerner knows which leaves make the best toilet paper.
5. Only a true southerner knows the difference between a hick, a red neck, a good ol’ boy, and po’ white trash.

RR, Re: The rioting. I got this from Rush.
If it’s against George Bush for causing this deluge, and if it’s a small crowd, the TV stations will show a ground view. If it’s a large crowd, you get an aerial view. But if it’s against the Iowa equivalent of Mayor Nagel, it’s the other way. Small crowd, aerial, etc.

A favorite of mine is from Calvin Coolidge:
“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

Great list, Kim. I’ll just add that deer season opener is a national holiday all sorts of places, including my native upper Midwest.
The way everything else occuring in Wisconsin just shuts down for two weekends in November is surpassed only by the way shopping centers and other places of public assembly become ghost towns for three hours every time the Packers play.

Ah ha, MiM, I see it now. I was a little surprised that we didn’t have a thread dedicated to it today. Several of my other “favorite” sites eventually did.
I heard the show at 5:30 this morning cuz my clock radio is set to a Christian station that plays FoTF then. It’s good motivation for me to jump out of bed and get in the shower cuz I really dislike James Dobson. This morning I continued to listen though, due to the subject matter.
I think JD is really pushing the envelop with this “Citizen Link” thingy. Yesterday he ended the show talking about it (I was back out of the shower – is that tmi?). He went over how it’s all set up so they can be political without getting into deep weeds with the IRS – even said something to the effect of having top-notch lawyers reviewing it. Since I was still half asleep at the time, I wanted to hear it again and went online to listen to the end of the show and, oddly enough, it wasn’t there. Not sure what that was all about.

Frank, that’s interesting. Professor Denbeaux represents quite a few of the Gitmo detainees, so I guess he would know. (Did you see yesterday that the DC Circuit ruled that a Chinese fellow should be released because even the government admits that he didn’t do anything against the US?)
Report comment to moderator
NJL — by Chinese fellow I believe you mean the Uighur natives who were accidentally rounded up in Afghanistan and are now stateless. The Uighur are not Chinese but rather Turkic Muslims who live in the far western portion of China above Tibet. The Chinese would like nothing better than to lump the Uighur Muslims with al-queda.
The Uighur detainees do not want to be released to China, and nor does the US, since they will disappear into a Chinese prison. The Afghan gov’t doesn’t want them back. And despite their innocence and the American error in imprisoning them, the US gov’t refuses to allow them to stay in the US. Last I heard the Albanian gov’t offered to take them.
