Friday poem
“The World State” by G.K. Chesterton
Oh, how I love Humanity
With love so pure and pringlish,
And how I hate the horrid French,
Who never will be English!
The International Idea,
The largest and the clearest,
Is welding all the nations now,
Except the one that’s nearest.
This compromise has long been known,
This scheme of partial pardons,
In ethical societies
And small suburban gardens —
The villas and the chapels where
I learned with little labour
The way to love my fellow-man
And hate my next-door neighbour.
(From Collected Poems, 1927)

Brilliant little poem. It reminds me of what Julian Lennon once said about his father, He wanted to give peace a chance, why didn’t he give me a chance? It is always easier to love an ideal than it is to change its diapers.

Strangely I had just read this poem a few days ago. It’s funny and true. It is easier to demand people love their neighbors than loving our own.
Here’s a funny quote from him about liberals and conservatives:
“The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected.”

XION,
LOLOLOLOL
I have aways liked this liberal / conservative muse.
A liberal would cut off his nose to spite his face if he had a face and a conservative would help him find a face if he could.

It reminds of me of Lucy from Peanuts.
She once said, “I love humanity. It’s the people I can’t stand.”
