The power of the purse seems to be more local. In my situation, the conservative gov’t took away the local board autonomy and gave the purse strings to the province Similar to the US, education is constitutionally a provincial concern and until very recently there were no national standards which made student transfers a difficult concern leading to students taking an extra year.

natonal standards do not have to be specific. Grade level expectations need to be addressed if only for the pragmatic reason of student transfers. I teach health which includes sex ed, its in the provincial curriculum, the main text is developed provincial with local issues inserted. In practice this means, I inform parents ahead of time as to the content and ask them to supply the moral guidance they feel is appropriate.

As for your other specific concerns — I can’t comment since they are generally an American only issue.

I agree that public education is a tool to shape the next generation, hence I enjoymy job. As I tell my daughter, she goes to school to become civilized. My inner marxist views public schooling as indoctrination into bourgeoisie morality.

And those standards always come with monetary strings attached, HRW, so the states are indebted to the national government to achieve those. Ergo, allowing the national government to set standards takes away power from the states.

If, in every excuse a woman uses to abort her child, you replaced the words ‘fetus’ or ‘baby’ for ‘two year old’, you would call in Child Services to take the poor child away.

How dare you pass judgment on the woman, when you have no idea what she’s going through?
You’re a male, so you have no right to comment.

No one’s forcing you to kill your own 2yo.

It’s speciesist to give a Homo sapiens 2yo so much more protection than a chimpanzee 2yo.

The child was conceived by incestuous rape, and her existence is a continual reminder to her mother of what happened, so she should die because of her father’s crime.
Stem cells could be harvested from this 2yo that could help cure many horrible diseases and disabilities—you religious fanatics want to stop this scientific research and cut off all hope of a cure for Alzheimer’s, heart disease, Parkinson’s, quadriplegia and diabetes.

Whose standards on:

Evolution vs Intelligent Design?

Multiculturalism?

Sex ed?

Revisionist history?

As long as the standards are objective, like math, phonics, geography, and reading comprehension, it might work, but “educational standards” are not left there.

Public education is very much a tool to shape the next generation of citizens by those in power over the educational standards.

Read carefully Outkast, I never said federal I did say I think it should be state and/or municipal level just like the US constitution. National standards need to be defined but that can be done between states. Education often needs to respond to local interests and local needs — differing skill base needed, differing school calendars may be used.
