Equal opportunity offense
After all the hubbub over The New Yorker’s cover featuring the Obamas, the magazine’s Condé Nast rival Vanity Fair has posted on its blog a version featuring John and Cindy McCain. The blog post reads:
“We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear, but we shelved it when The New Yorker’s became the ‘It Girl’ of the blogosphere. Now, however, in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Condé Nast building, we’d like to share it with you. Confidentially, of course.”
And, of course, this isn’t an actual Vanity Fair cover; just one created so that people like me would post something about it.
Many found the Obama cover offensive, including both the Obama and McCain campaigns. Do you find the McCain one offensive, as well?

Not offended. I find the whole hullabaloo quite humorous.

Compared to political cartoons of the 18th and 19th century these are tame. Bring ‘em on.

I thought the Obama cover was wonderful! The Vanity cover is merely stating the obvious, that McCain is old.
I would be offended about the burning Constitution in the fireplace if McCain actually represented conservative thought. But the McCain-Feingold Act is the most blatant assault on free speech since Warren Burger’s Lemon Test.

XION’s right. Vanity fair illustrates age, but doesn’t tell a story like the New Yorker cover, and lacks roots in the deep soil of hysteria such as Republicans enjoy.
Report comment to moderator
It doesn’t even look like McCain.
It doesn’t lack for roots in the deep soil of snide remarks liberals are prone to make.
Report comment to moderator
Oh, and the reason there’s no “story,” is because there isn’t anything to tell.
Report comment to moderator
Are they saying that Cindy McCain is an elf?
And has anyone else noticed that McCain looks like Charlie Brown?
Report comment to moderator
The Obama cover showed things that are not true.
The McCain cover shows things that are true. McCain is old. Cindy is a pill popper.

Does McCain use a walker?

Why does McCain look like FDR?

Wow, Lumpy isn’t biased at all!

TJ-
It is satire. He is old and old people use walkers.
Outkast-
Do you have evidence that Obama is a terrorist? I have evidence that Cindy has a drug problem, McCain is old and forgetful, and he loves George Bush.

Godlumps:
It is satire. It wasn’t even aimed at BO, but at us crazy right-wingers who think he’s Muslim.
(Is there an echo in here?)
Report comment to moderator
Yeah, the Vanity Fair cover is more successful making the truth into a farce than the New Yorker cover was making lies into a farce. Not exactly very savvy of either of them.
If they wanted to really mirror the “intent” behind the New Yorker’s cover they would have pictured him with his illegitimate black baby.
I missed the Cindy McCain is a pill popper story and just assumed those were supposed to be John’s meds. You know, because he is so old and old people take a lot of meds.
In any event you would need some Vitamin V too if you were married to John McCain.
I do like the detail though. Look at the band-aid on his head. Oh, poor old man can’t get out of a car without help!
Report comment to moderator
You have evidence that Cindy McCain at one time misued prescription drugs. You also have evidence that she learned from the experience. Want to take a guess at how many Americans have done that?
Report comment to moderator
Vitamin V? Ewww I just got a nasty visual.
If this blog is still active after 4 hours, please consult a physician. While all this talk can be very exciting, it may cause liver damage, kidney failure, internal bleeding, seizures, projectile vomiting, explosive diarrhea, heart attack and death.
Since McCain is supposedly on all those meds and is against freedom of speech perhaps he could ban all those ridiculous drug commercials. That would be a national service.
Report comment to moderator
Agreed that it is satire and agreed that he is old. Some old people use walkers; most don’t. McCain doesn’t, therefore the cover shows at least one thing that is not true.
Report comment to moderator
Besides, the image of McCain as old and decrepit is just plain farce. He could probably kill anyone on this blog with his bare hands. I’d rather have McCain by my side in fight empty-handed than Obama armed with an AK-47.
I’d be afraid BO would hand it over to the enemy.

See, anyone can do satire.

To make it more accurate, they should show the family he left for the rich heiress wife standing outside the window with the black prostitute and his other kid peeking over their shoulder.

Needs the prostitutes from his VN day too.

godlumps — “Do you have evidence that Obama is a terrorist?”
I think the cartoon depicted Michelle as the terrorist, but since her last name is Obama, I guess your question could stand on one leg.
However, Bill Ayers most likely was a terrorist and Obama has a relationship with him including going to Ayers home for the purpose of being dubbed the successor of State Senator Alice Palmer in the presence of his wife Dohrn and other liberals. Bill and Dohrn Ayers are unrepentant bombers associated with the Weather Underground.
“I don’t regret setting bombs; I feel we didn’t do enough,” Ayers told the New York Times in 2001.

It would seem Barry needed, or at least Palmer wanted him to have the blessings of these terrorists.

So your answer is no.

They should also have had the Aparteid Divestment Bills he opposed somewhere in there, and a briefcase labeled Obama’s Positions which McCain is adopting lately, but that is difficult to draw.
Report comment to moderator
But we are agreed, GL, that the illustration of McCain on the cover using a walker is indeed false, no?
Report comment to moderator
’Lumps– You are always mentioning McCain’s forgetfulness and misstatements. How come ytou never mention the gaffs Obama makes? He once said there are 57 states. Then last Sunday I heard a clip of him on one of the Sunday shows saying something to the effect that he would eight to ten years to do what he wanted as president. 8 – 10? I thought two terms made 8 years only!

One Man Gaffe Machine Imitates Energizer Bunny
Barack Obama is at it again! Holy Cow! Does this guy ever stop? Recently in Israel, Obama made a pledge:“In terms of knowing my commitments, you don’t have to just look at my words. You can look at my deeds. Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, which is my committee, a bill to call for divestment from Iran as a way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don’t obtain a nuclear weapon.”
Whoops, only problem is Barry is NOT a member of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee. That’s not only a gaffee — it’s lying, IMO!
Report comment to moderator
He’s lying outkast. It’s like McCain lying about troop levels in Iraq.
Truth is we are almost 20,000 troops over pre-surge levels.
McCain is either lying, or McCain is out of touch with the realities of his and Bush’s war.
This is why I’m voting for BOB BARR in ‘08!
Report comment to moderator
Peter, we will still be doing Bush’s plan well after his 8 years. Is that what you mean?
Report comment to moderator
TJ. We agreed. Use of a walker wouldn’t surprise me in the near future. He appears hunched and confused. Doesn’t know how many troops are in Iraq, doesn’t know how many were there before the surge. Thinks Czechoslovakia is still a country, doesn’t remember the 9 million gallons of oil spilled during the hurricanes of 2005, and forgot to pay his property taxes for 4 years. Walker is coming.
Report comment to moderator
The other thing the cartoon lacks is a big pile of Oil Money, and a few extremist preachers in a cage on the mantle?
Report comment to moderator
A walker is not out of the question. But years in a POW camp can do that kind of thing to you. When he first came home from Vietnam, he couldn’t even put his hands together to clap. If it were me, I’d been in a wheelchair a long time ago, I suppose.
But as long as we agree that the walker is not true (contra post # 8), I’m fine with that.

Is there evidence of Barry’s tossing bombs, no—BUT, since the Presidency isn’t a one man job and he must drag a complete cadre of friends, favor-holders, like-minded policy wonks, and sympathizers with him, the nest from which the President comes is extremely important, or should be, in consideration of the man himself and whether he is worthy of a vote.
Barry is a lightweight ACORN community organizer with as much leadership experience as comes from representing factions of whiners seeking government handouts, with no ability to string together a coherent sentence without a tele-prompter, with not enough memory of what lie he told last to maintain a consistent story, and no sense of the magnitude of the job he’s being pushed into by his party leadership who thinks they can sell this doof and their puppet to the American people.
Unfortunately some, such as you, ignorantly buy his “change” routine even though his pockets are full of the same Democrat policy plans, really upstanding Americans such as William Ayers, winers and “victims” with their hands out for even more government goodies all sporting the same policy line and reading the same tired playbook the Democrats have proffered for the last 50 years. What “change”?
And McCain is a hold nose and vote for guy, but he’s at least got something inside his suit that qualifies him for the job. Is he the best available—far from it, BUT, unfortunately he’s the only real choice.

In the article today, “Obama Scraps Visit to Wounded US Troops in Germany”, we see another example of the mistrust, uncertainty, misjudgment, and unbelievability in Barak Obama’s strange dialogue to us and to the world. I don’t understand it. What’s wrong with a campaign stop in Berlin IF he can make a campaign stop in Maryland, to the Walter Reed Army Hospital??? Maybe somebody can explain!
BERLIN (AP) — Sen. Barack Obama scrapped plans to visit wounded members of the armed forces in Germany as part of his overseas trip, a decision his campaign said was made because the Democratic presidential candidate thought it would be inappropriate on a campaign-funded journey.
A campaign adviser said the U.S. military saw the visit as a campaign stop.
“We learned from the Pentagon last night that the visit would be viewed instead as a campaign event,” the adviser, retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Scott Gration, said in a statement. “Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perveived as a campaign event when his visit was to show his appreciation for our troops and decided instead not to go.”
Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign immediately criticized the move.
“Barack Obama is wrong. It is never inappropriate to visit our men and women in the military,” said Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the Republican contender.
Obama’s decision raised a number of questions because the visit, which had been scheduled for Friday, never appeared on the schedule of events distributed to reporters who are accompanying him on his travels.
The first word from the campaign about its existence was a statement from Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs.
Obama had been planning to go to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany before a flight to Paris. Gibbs said the stop was canceled because Obama decided “it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”

So Obama’s saying, “I’m here to support you, as long as I don’t have to look at you.”
