Polymorphous Satan
If God’s presence in Esther is more palpable for His not being mentioned by name, so is Satan’s presence in Ezra and Nehemiah. We never see the overflowing ashtrays and half-drunk cups of coffee on his desk, as we did in his mischief with righteous Job (Job 1) and unrighteous Ahab (1 Kings 22).
After seventy years of exile in Persia (and, for all appearances, the death of the dream that was Israel), two Israelite leaders are spotted back in town to rebuild. It is the smallest of trickles, but as chilling a tiding for Satan as the sighting of Edmund in the land of Narnia for the White Witch.
Satan works by proxies. Israel has natural enemies in the Jerusalem area. With Satan, they see in Ezra and Nehemiah the writing on the wall of their ineluctable demise. They start with oily kindness (Ezra 4:1ff), spurious offers to help (Nehemiah 6:11), devious appeals for dialogue (Nehemiah 6:4). They shift tactics to discouragement, and undermining counselors, varying this with intimidation (5:3,4). They pen poisoned letters to King Artaxerses (4:11ff), and then King Darius (5:6). Bandits line the roads from Persia. Still the rebuilding goes on.
Vexed at the ineptness of Israel’s foes, Satan unsheathes a tried-and-true strategy — Jew against Jew. Resettled Israelites are committing usury against fellow Israelites (Nehemiah 5). Tobias the Ammonite, unable to destroy Israel by force, worms his way in by intermarriage and friendship (Nehemiah 13).
In all of this, Israel prevails, seeking hard after God, building the walls with trowel in one hand and sword in the other.
If you are pretty much sitting out the dance as a Christian, Satan may be leaving you alone with his polymorphous onslaughts. But if you are involved in God’s kingdom building, be expecting trouble. The taunts of your next door neighbor and the acting up of your arthritis may be more than meets the eye.

Tell me again; Satan doesn’t believe in skipping ahead to the end of the book, so he doesn’t know how it will all end.

Oh, brother…

Random Name – The original sin is that hubris to believe one may elevate himself to the level of God, and thus not be subject to His preordained ends.

Time will tell. Or, if it’s timeless, we’ll never know.

“Satan works by proxies.”
Certainly around here.

While I certainly believe in Satan, because Jesus Christ warned us about him, I think people give him more power than he really has – especially now. Satan was defeated at Calvary. We have to remember that, and also realize that the majority of sin comes from the world and our flesh. When we take a “Satan’s behing every doorpost nipping at our heels” it… well makes people like Night Train say, “Oh, brother.” Is it any wonder people question Christianity when we give a creature (and a pretty much dead one at that) this much power? Just a thought.

What is the relationship between Satan and The Grinch?
Report comment to moderator
None that I can see. The Grinch was turned out as a youngster because he didn’t fit in. He acts out like a child would. Didn’t you watch the movie?

Oh my goodness. (OK, don’t laugh.) My granddaughter is not allowed to watch television because it hypnotizes children. Neither my wife and I on our island, nor Random Granddaughter with two mommies in the city, watch live television, though we own dead TVs and DVD players.
Last Christmas (we celebrate an atheistic/agnostic/pagan/heathen/winter solstice Christmas) mommies decided to let RG watch her first television show (still three years old) so she wouldn’t start thinking television was something special that only Christian kids get to watch. RG did have an Advent Calendar.)
We had a tape of The Grinch. She watched intently. After she went to bed, she told Mommy (birth mother/my daughter’s partner), “I was watching ‘TAY-VAY’.” It was clear she felt she was doing something naughty. She also said, in a tone of some concern and dread, “The Grinch was BAD!”
This is all true, but I don’t know that it answers the question raised in #7.

seems like it fulfills the same psychological need. and they are both made up. that is partly what i was looking for RN thanks. NJL isn’t that rather similar to the satan story anyway.

“Satan works by proxies”; the really frightening part of this is that we elect some of them.

Please see Screwtape Letters for some rather insightful reading from a reliable source concerning his views of satanic activities among us. If you can find the audio narrated by John Clese all the better; it’s terrific. Our adversary prowls about seeking whom he may devour. But I agree that the larger problem is identified by John in 1 John 2:15, 16 namely the world system and my flesh. I call them the 3 P’s; Pleasure, Possessions, and Pride.
